“Play it, James”

From serving as Elvis’ sideman for the better part of a decade to shredding up the studio with a 6-string southern twang, James Burton’s influence on the development of rock and country guitar is simply incalculable. The Fender James Burton Telecaster harnesses his half-century-plus of guitar mastery, resulting in an instrument with exceptional playability and unmatched tonal versatility. This guitar starts with an ultra-light basswood body, loaded with a trio of Specially Designed James Burton single-coil pickups, 5-way switching, and an S-1 series switch to provide a sweeping array of tones befitting a studio maestro like James. Next, the maple-on-maple neck’s vintage-style frets and modern 9.5-inch radius combine the best specs of old and new for a slick, speedy feel perfect for high-speed chicken pickin’ finesse. Finally, the James Burton is finished with a sleek Paisley Flame finish — a nod to James’ iconic Paisley Tele that he often played onstage with Elvis during his Las Vegas period.

Custom James Burton single-coil pickups

This guitar may technically be considered a Tele, but the truth is that the James Burton Telecaster’s tonal Strat-meets-Tele versatility defies categorization. Three Special Design Burton pickups cover the entire Fender single-coil spectrum, sporting a 5-way switch that provides a plethora of tones ranging from James’ signature chicken pickin’ staccato strut to quacky Strat-style in-between tones and more. Moreover, the S-1 switch unlocks series circuitry on the two and four positions that Sweetwater guitarists favor when searching for a girthier tone with a hotter output.

Ultra-lightweight basswood body

Regarding tonewoods, basswood is about the lightest timber commonly found on a 6-string. It’s often favored by musicians who spend the majority of their career slinging a guitar onstage, where playing a guitar with a double-digit weight can quickly lead to fatigue and sore shoulders. Beyond that, the James Burton Telecaster’s basswood body features a Paisley Flame finish for a touch of vintage hot-rod flair — a necessary aesthetic precaution for any guitarist expected to back up the King of Rock ’n’ Roll on a Las Vegas stage.

Robust ’60s “U” maple neck

The James Burton Telecaster’s neck comes equipped with a somewhat robust “U”-shaped maple neck — by no means a classic Tele baseball bat shape, but large enough to give your hands a proper grip when punching out your favorite twangy licks. Topped with a matching maple fingerboard and fast-playing vintage frets, this Tele features a modernized 9.5-inch radius to crank up the playability and performance, allowing for singing double-stop bends in any register without a hint of fret out.

Fender James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-lightweight basswood body finished with Paisley Flame attitude
  • Maple neck carved into a chunky ’60s “U” profile
  • Matching maple fingerboard with 21 vintage-style frets in a modern 9.5-inch radius
  • A trio of Specially Designed James Burton single coil-coil pickups split the difference between Strat quack and Tele twang
  • 5-way switch and S-1 series switch provide exceptional tonal versatility
  • 6-saddle string-through hardtail Stratocaster bridge offers enhanced intonation compared to a 3-barrel Tele bridge
  • Rock-solid Deluxe cast/sealed tuners with pearl buttons

James Burton Telecaster

Purchase the red flamed JB Telecaster in November, I have had several electric guitars and this one is superior to any I have owned. I have owned America Strat and tele's and others and for all around tone quality and playability it is just amazing. The folks from Sweetwater were also great with the communication and packaging for shipping.
I would highly recommend this guitar to any professional guitar player, have played for 40 years had many set ups and different bands which required that certian sound and tones to fit their type of music and compliment the other instruments. I say just go out and try the James Burton Telecaster if you are looking for a new guitar and you may be impressed.

James Burton Telecaster

I have never owned something so impressive. The one noticeable difference is the lace sensor pickups. Their not as hot a Fender pickups, and I have to brighten up the amp when I play it. I had to hunt for that Tele sound a little, but Friday night's gig was awesome. If your asking would I buy it again, and my answer is, "IN A HEART BEAT".

Fender James Burton Telecaster - Red Paisley Flames

I don't write reviews, but decided to this time because of my extreme satisfaction with this guitar. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Have bought a number of guitars, amps, etc., from Sweetwater, and have never been disappointed. This guitar, however, is over the top for what I wanted. I am a product of the '50s music, and watching James Burton made me always want to get his sound. I now play this through a Fender '65 Deluxe Tube Combo Amp., and I can get that echo, twang, but solid sound. Everything about the instrument, in my opinion, is perfect. Obviously, the Burton designed pickups are just what is needed for a fine sounding, and beautiful, axe. Could not be more pleased with the product or the usual Sweetwater service.
Music background: Over 50 years of amature pickin' and grinnin', with a little bit of garage band thrown in.

Swiss Army Knife of Guitars

OK....Right off the bat I'll say this; I really HATE when someone gives a 5 Star Rating to any piece of gear. I can't remember if I ever have done so for any guitar because to me, to get that "perfect" rating, I'd assume you'd never need anything else, (in this case, an electric guitar), ever again. Well, I learned my lesson with the JB Tele.

As a very seasoned guitar player who has been lucky enough to play with some world class musicians, I can honestly say that this guitar is it's very own masterpiece of tonality, feel, fit and finish, (the flashy paint job is cool too). So yes, I did say masterpiece......and that's why, IMO, this is one of Fender's best kept secrets period. Now....does it sound like my authentic vintage or Custom Shop Strat's or Tele's? Yes and no. But that's not what this guitar is all about. I'm assuming Fender and James Burton designed this guitar so it does one thing; Offer as many tonal possibilities in one guitar that most player's would never want or need another electric guitar. I believe they came as close as you could come, and that my rating I gave is surprisingly better than what I gave my PRS DGT, (A guitar I thought was unbeatable for tone, feel, fit and finish).

This JB Tele also changed my mind about 3 things I firmly believed in for a long, long time; 1) Hybrid style guitars, (ala Nashville design) are not worth the investment if you already have a Strat and Tele, 2) Passive EMG pickups sound dull & lifeless, and 3) Basswood bodies are a big No-No. I've had mine for about 6 months now....so I am WELL beyond the Honeymoon phase. I can say this will all honesty; It's the only guitar I need for my gig schedule. The ONLY reason I bring two guitars is that I use a hybrid tuning on a few songs so it makes it easier when playing live, and if I ever break a string....I have easy access to a 2nd guitar. One key thing to remember; This guitar sounds "darker" that your standard fare Strat or Tele. Don't let that scare you. Use your amps EQ as well as the JB's Tone knob. You'll find everything you need there.

So I'll get to the good part; When it arrived from Sweetwater, (a big thanks to John Ptak who is one of the classiest salesperson's Sweetwater has), it was perfectly in tune after being packaged in a double walled shipping container and sent via Air and to Ground from IN to CA. When it arrived, the stings were wound perfectly, (sting lock method), there were no dead spots on the fretboard, it had perfect intonation, the finish was perfect and there was not a single finger print on the entire guitar. And yes...it came with a nice big bag of candy! Before plugging it into any of my vintage BF Fender amps, I had my Tone King Imperial already set up.....and at the first strum it was BOOM; a beautiful, articulate, blooming, sustaining, piano like compilation of notes that when the chord faded, not one single hum took it's place.

Look...I could go on and on about the JB Tele, (you can go read all the reviews on all the other sites if you need to), and I know this guitar is not for everyone, (no guitar is),.......but you owe it to yourself to try one if you are a gigging musician who needs a guitar that sounds great, easily changing from Straty to Teleish tones and everything in between with the "Strato-Tele" S-1 switching system, as well as has a fantastic neck, (it resonates acoustically on every string), and can cover any tone you can imagine so long as you take the time to use the Tone Knob. Bottom line; This guitar into any classic single channel amp, using any decent type of TS style pedal will spoil you.

My Kind of Tele

I have been a huge Fender guy since the early 60s. Fender guitars and amps are to me, the instruments that changed music more than any other company. I'm mostly a Strat guy but have owned four or five Telecasters over the years. I have two now but wanted a Telecaster that took it to the next level in tone and playability. As a young boy just learning to play, I used to watch The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet so I could see Ricky Nelson's guitar player, James Burton, play those fantastic leads as in Hello Mary Lou and Travelin' Man. He was an outstanding studio musician having been one of the few hand chosen guitarist in the Wrecking Crew in the L.A. studios. When I saw that a James' Signature model was available, I had to try one. I watched a few Youtube videos and decided to call my SW rep, Wayne Davis and he hooked me up. As usual, the guitar came well packaged and in perfect setup condition out of the box. This guitar cannot be explained - it has to be played, felt and heard to believe. None of the harshness of a regular Tele but yet distinctly a Fender Telecaster. The quality build on this guitar is definitely Custom Shop level. The pickups are the sweetest sounding P.Us I have ever heard. I understand that James Burton worked closely with Fender to get the perfect sound and feel of what he wanted to be his own Fender Signature Telecaster. Like one of the other reviewers stated, this is definitely a "below the radar" treasure. This guitar, with the three Fender Lace Sensor P.U.s and a 5 way selector switch plus an S-1 switch, makes it one of the most versatile guitars I've ever owned. If you love James Burton then you will love this Tele. If you don't love JB, you will still love this Tele. Contact your SW rep and put this one on your wish list. Hey, my wish just came true.
