Yamaha THR10 II: Realistic Tube Tone in a Compact Package

No matter where you are, you can plug into a Yamaha THR10 II and experience realistic tube tone. This combo amplifier includes a full arsenal of guitar and bass amp emulations, along with mic models for your acoustic-electric and flat modes for everything else. Ditch your pedalboard — the Yamaha THR10 II’s 3-band EQ, and a great-sounding selection of modulation effects, echoes, and reverbs, have you covered. Bluetooth support enables you to stream backing tracks — with full Hi-Fi quality — through the THR10 II’s stereo speakers. You also get plug-and-play USB connectivity for recording and playback, which makes the Yamaha THR10 II a useful studio tool, as well as a first-rate traveling companion.

Yamaha THR10 II is loaded with essential amp tones and onboard effects

Yamaha built the THR10 II for creatively combining tones and effects. Choose from one of 15 amp models. You can also plug in your bass or acoustic-electric guitar, and there's even a setting that bypasses the modeling altogether. The Yamaha THR10 II's modulation effects live on a second knob, and its echoes and reverbs live on a third. The result is a full amplifier rig worth of effects and tone combinations. And thanks to Yamaha's Virtual Circuitry Modeling, the THR10 II emulates each component in each amp model and effect. The guitarists here at Sweetwater have high praise for the Yamaha THR10 II — it gives you super-realistic sound and feel.

Yamaha’s THR Remote app.

You can also access the THR10’s compressor and noise gate for more tone-tweaking possibilities. And since the Yamaha THR10 II features five user settings recall buttons, you can take up to five of your favorite tones with you anywhere.

Reviews

exactly what I wanted, and more
I've been using this amp for several months now, and I have been extremely happy with it. For some quick background, I am a college student with not a lot of money or space, learning how to write music as a hobby. I initially bought this as a small amp that I could use to teach myself guitar with, as well as a way to record myself playing without the lag of guitar amp software. It has not only excelled at both of those functions, but has since grown with me musically as I've gotten into bass guitar and got a new keyboard that doesn't have its own speakers built into it.

In general I would describe the amp as having a very clean sound to it; it does not normally have the bassy oomph many people expect from modern speakers. This may give you the impression that the amp does not have a good bass response, but this is not the case. The Bass amp setting will definitely give you that powerful low end. The Flat setting is also perfect for keys/synths (I'm partial to the "classic" model in the app).

You can get quite a bit of control over your sound in any of these modes, even moreso if you use the app; which I would highly recommend at least initially to try out some of the factory presets or ones from online. On this model of the amp there's actually certain settings that can only be accessed via the app (there is a desktop version as well), which I find somewhat annoying but also somewhat useful as you can change settings without actually going over to the amp itself. Personally, I just tweaked a couple presets and made my own and almost exclusively use those so all I need to do to get the sound I want is hit the preset that corresponds to whichever instrument I'm playing. If you want more than the assignable 5 buttons can offer, you can use the app to load more from files saved on your phone/pc. Yamaha engineers even released a document detailing what all the different amp models are based on, if you'd like to have a bit more context while tweaking settings.

I didn't really see myself using the bluetooth speaker feature much, but that has also surprisingly been very useful to me. I can have my pc/phone send a beat or song to play along to without needing to break out the 12 ft cable my room layout currently requires (although I do still need to do that if I want to record myself playing). Again, not something I expected to use as often as I have.

My only complaint about this amp is something I can't even verify is an issue with the amp itself, and may be my computer; I don't know because I haven't seen anyone else online with my experience. But basically after using the amp for several hours (~5-6 on average) outputting via USB, the PC audio will become horribly metallic and recordings will be either inaudible or horribly distorted. The guitar or whatever I'm playing will still sound perfectly fine, so this means the issue is with the USB audio interface portion of the amp or my pc's connection with it. Power cycling usually fixes it, but sometimes it takes a couple tries. I haven't reached out to Yamaha for support as of yet because it hasn't become that prominent of an issue for me.

TLDR: I think this amp is very stylish, versatile, and an incredible value for the price. I didn't even comment on the built in effects, which only add to the capabilities already mentioned; even moreso for someone who doesn't already have a bunch of effect pedals.
My best friend
This is the absolute best practice amp I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned all of the major ones. I picked up the wireless receiver and it’s a dream. Music streaming via Bluetooth is great for playing with backing tracks and carrying it out to backyard parties to play music. You can control it via the mobile app or via USB on your computer. The tuner is great. The effects are great. The JCM800 factory preset is juicy and organic. Love it.

Great in a pinch, or to save space.
I mostly keep this amp in the living room of my apartment, and it serves its purpose well as a practice / idly strumming type of amp. I will say that in my experience it's not worth trying to run pedals into it, fuzz does not sound good or natural compared to running into a "real" tube amp (though modulation effects may work okay). The built-in effects are serviceable if not overly flexible or unique, aside from the tremolo which could use some tweaking. This amp really excels in its dirt sounds. Loads of amp and cab sims are included, and there are some really juicy sounds you can pull out of there, including nearly any classic rock vibe you can imagine (excluding fuzzy stuff). Punk, metal, blues, all achievable here. I'm not a huge fan of the app integration, and the knobs on top offer pretty limited control over the effects.

Also, this thing looks awesome; that may be one of its best selling points. It looks great sitting in my tv console or on a side table, and it gets plenty loud for home / solo use. The clean sounds are not the best, they sound a bit shallow/cold to my ear. But for most any type of basic, dirty rock sound, it's excellent. Also great for travel/plug and play on road trips!

Best practice amp ever
I love this little amp! It sounds great! Very small form factor. Easy to carry around to a friends house or on vacation! I even like the little app that you can download. It works fine on my apple phone! Highly recommended!!
it is the best!!!
Purchased this last week and arrived on friday. downloaded the app on my phone and knew the settings i wanted for some brown sound. within minutes was in heaven. this amp is really amazing. super loud and the tone is unreal. the app for your phone is incredible. make your tweaks save it and you have forever. the echo and reverb are really nice. the last seven days have not stopped playing. you get so lost into how good it sounds. love the light effect as well. thank you for the sweetwater team as always getting to me perfect. Nate is the best!!!!
