The Next Generation of Roland's Flagship V-Drums Module

If 2016's TD-50 drum module represented a sea change in V-Drums modeling technology, the TD-50X takes V-Drums tone and expression to another level entirely. Inside, you'll find 70 premium preset drum kits and 900 instrument sounds that run the gamut from rock, pop, and metal to EDM, world, and experimental styles. Support for all three of Roland's latest digital pads — snare, ride, and hi-hat — makes playing on the TD-50X the most lifelike V-Drums experience to date. So even if you're coming from a traditional Roland pad setup, the TD-50X gives you plenty of room to grow into. Thanks to an intuitive interface with hands-on mix faders, per-function knobs and switches, and endless opportunities to drill down and fine-tune your sound with muffling, tuning, and more, the Roland TD-50X has all the makings of a sound module that can last a career. It's powered by the latest wave of Roland's Prismatic Sound Modeling technology. This non-sample-based sound engine allows you to tailor the size, composition, space, and tone of each drum and cymbal to a staggering degree. Other features eDrummers at Sweetwater love about the TD-50X include discrete ins and outs for pads and sends, 500 user samples for bringing your studio sounds to the stage, 24 minutes of onboard mono record time (12 minutes stereo) for capturing ideas in practice and on the road, and up to 32-channel USB audio recording for creating professional drum tracks via a single cable.

Dream up any kit through Prismatic Sound Modeling

Roland V-Drums are the undisputed kings of virtual drum shaping. And with the TD-50X's Prismatic Sound Modeling engine, you can expect nuance and realism like never before. The TD-50X's every onboard kit is crafted to sound great without any tweaking. But for those times when you need a custom kit for a particular performance, Prismatic Sound Modeling has you covered. You have control over each drum shell's thickness and overtones, plus each cymbal's size and thickness. You can even control virtual mic placement to dial in the right amount of natural ambience. Once you've found your sound, you can sweeten the kick, snare, or toms with 30 types of built-in FX, including smooth multiband compression and saturation.

Import custom libraries at will

Whether you're importing one-shots of your studio acoustic kit or loading in your favorite sample library, Roland makes it easy to incorporate these sounds into your V-Drum TD-50X. High-capacity SDHC cards let you create an arsenal of custom libraries and call them up on your V-Drums at will.

Scrap or store kit changes with Snapshot

Tone tweakers abound here at Sweetwater. What we love about the Roland V-Drums TD-50X sound module is that you can edit kits to your heart's content without committing. Use the Snapshot feature to quickly A/B the before and after. And if you like what you've done, save it; if not, scrap it and start over.

Practice and perform like never before

With its sophisticated brushed black finish to its expressive kit sounds, the TD-50X is built for the stage. But you may be surprised to learn what a difference the TD-50X can make to your practice hours. Jam along to the TD-50X's built-in metronome to practice septuplets and strengthen your internal click. Or loop a groove and solo over it to build your lick vocabulary. What's especially cool is you can record yourself playing to a click or backing track right onto an SDHC card. This is a handy way to track ideas and share with bandmates.

Take control of the way you I/O

The versatility of the TD-50X is fully seen in its flexible in and outs. Send drum kits pre-mixed to your FOH engineer using balanced stereo XLR outs, or directly into your home stereo speaker system with unbalanced stereo 1/4-inch outs. And if you've got mixer channels to spare, send your kick, snare, toms, and cymbals separately via balanced 1/4-inch direct outs for individual treatment and level control. MIDI in/out even lets you track your performance and replace sounds at a later time.

Record up to 32 channels of multitrack audio over USB

Sweetwater drummers love our eDrums for home recording. And with the Roland V-Drum TD-50X module, you can do it all over USB, in glorious 96kHz, without reaching for an audio interface. This means you can enjoy studiophile drum recording, even in your apartment, at any time of day.

Professional quality

I bought the TD-50X module soon after purchasing a TD-27KV Gen2 complete set. I decided to purchase the TD-50X as I wanted the flexibilty with the 8-discrete (balanced) outputs for live performances. In terms of sound/sample quality, the TD-50X and the TD-27 Gen2 are very comparable. I was formerly using a much older Roland module (TD-11), and the difference in the newer high-end modules is amazing. There is bit more sensitivy ("expression") in the TD-50X compared to the TD-27, but it is subtle. If I didn't want/need the I/O flexibility of the TD-50X, I would have been perfectly happy with just the TD-27. In fact, there are a couple of "kits" on the TD-27 that I wish were on the TD-50X. Beyond the I/O interface, the TD-50X does have a much more in-depth set of editing tools ... if you want to create your own kits, the possibilities are endless. I've also purchased some of the Roland drum pads which are actual drums with mesh heads in order to create a more realistic looking live drum set (example Roland PDA100, etc.). In general, the quality of ALL mid/high end Roland equipment is as good as it gets. It's just as sturdy as my Tama/Starclassic drums/hardware. The ONLY reason I didn't give the TD-50X 5-stars are due to a few minor items. Example: There's a handy input for mixing pre-recorded music in with the drums (and routing through the headphones) ... can be used for practicing to pre-recorded tracks. Unfortunately, the external input gain is not adequte for the music coming out of my iPhone, so I'm having to use an external mixer to achieve the balance needed between the drum volume and pre-recorded music volume for practicing. Note that the TD-27 has BlueTooth and works much better for practicing against pre-recorded music (connects effortlessly to my iPhone) ... the TD-50X doesn't have BlueTooth. Also ... turning on/off the click-track requires entering the click menu to access a click on/off menu button (seems like one-step too many). Again ... these are not deal-breakers in light of the overall sound/build quality. I would buy again, and will likely buy the next generation (hoping Roland will imporove the external input gain and add BlueTooth).

Up your drum game!

We've been upgrading a Roland TD-20 piece by piece since it came out years ago. Adding the TD-50 module was a HUGE leap forward. I hand craft all the drum sounds for my band (I'm not the drummer, but I'm very particular) and this unit has all the features I needed. You can use the articulation of the stock snares, kick, & toms and blend that with your own samples which I take right from our records! This was you get more realism than a "one shot" sample, but all the tone from your albums. It's a win for live shows and studio recording!

Great upgrade!

I recently upgraded my Roland VAD507 V-Drums Acoustic Design Drum Kit with the Roland V-Drums TD-50X Electronic Drums Sound Module. It was well worth the substantial cost difference.

fantastic tool

This is the cream of the crop, and I love playing it. I am reasonably certain a jazz drummer could play serious gigs with this unit and sound fantastic, with no complaints from other musicians or the crowd. It's amazing how far Roland have taken virtual drums.

Balanced outputs

My KV30 brain does not have balanced outputs, something I've been trying to use more these days.
Plenty of options for adding extra triggers with this one.
Front panel inputs for headphones and audio. Nice!

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
