Do-it-all Kit for Today's Gigging Drummers

The Yamaha Tour Custom Maple promises pro drummers a single kit for touring and recording. At just 5.6mm thin, the Tour Custom Maple's 6-ply maple shells with 45° bearing edges speak with authority. The toms boast a wide tuning range and excellent intervallic relationships, while the bass drum packs a modern attack and timeless warmth to connect with audiences onstage and on tape. The Tour Custom Maple builds on Yamaha's 50 years in the drum industry, borrowing features — single-post lugs and YESS tom mounts — from its award-winning Absolute series. Stick-saving rounded Dyna-Hoops and an eye-catching satin finish give the Tour Custom Maple great stage appeal.

Thin maple shells promise life and longevity

Yamaha returns to its all-maple shells, inspired by its Maple Custom Absolute line, for the latest Tour Custom Maple. Shells are kept thin for great attack and projection and strengthened by Yamaha's propriety staggered diagonal seam construction. This combination is responsible for the kit's studio-ready tone and tour-grade durability. Each Yamaha Tour Custom Maple shell pack is finished in a modern satin stain that's guaranteed to stand the test of time.

Rounded hoops on 45° edges

Yamaha's rounded Dyna-Hoops don't just give the Tour Custom Maple its throwback appeal. They also focus its sound and stabilize its tuning for recording-grade tones that work for a wide range of music and stand up to the scrutiny of the studio. Yamaha's 45° bearing edges minimize head-to-shell contact for a sweet, singing sustain that Sweetwater knows Yamaha fans will take to instantly.

Reviews

I’m so pleased!
I own a set of the Birch Stage Customs with the natural finish. It was my gigging kit. I'm very happy with that kit. So much bang for the buck. But I wanted a maple kit for my gigs. With the small stages in the venues around town, I wanted the 20" kick. I was browsing the deals on here and I run across the Tour Custom with a 20" kick in the natural finish. I put EC2s on it. I absolutely love this kit. The toms are punchy like the birch but warm and resonant. The low end on the kick belies it's 15x20 size with the stock heads. Those heads are some kind of Remo with the dampening rings on both batter and reso sides. I might upgrade the heads later but for now I'm pleased. I feel that the Tour Custom series are an incredible value. It's quality is on par with drums in the $2k range. I say this because I own a set of Gretsch USA Customs for comparison that cost me twice as much.

The bearings edges, hardware, finish and sound surpass what I payed for this kit. If yo want spend less than $ for a maple kit, this is one that sound be on your lists.
Blown Away!
I continue to be amazed by the fit, finish, quality and sound of the current crop of "mid-level" drum kits on the market as of late. The lines between high-end kits and kits such as the Yamaha Tour Customs are blurred to the point that one questions the point of spending the extra cash on a high end kit. I write this review with the experience of 45 years of playing and having had 50+ kits in that time. Currently, I see no point in keeping my Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau's, the Tour Customs are that good. As far as the hair splitting arguments of Chinese Maple vs. North American Maple, I find the differences between those two woods to be in the ear of the beholder rather than based on any fact. Also, this is one of the few shell packs that has what I would consider to be close to "traditional" sized drums and does away with the whole ridiculous "virgin" bass drum concept. Too many kits on the market today require a separate stand/s for the rack tom/s.
The Tour Customs sound wonderful, have a wide tuning range and the hardware is the exact same stuff as on the the older Yamaha MCA/BCA series. Bearing edges are perfect, shell finish is beautiful, chrome plating perfect and the Slingerland style hoops are wonderful. Two badges on the rack toms on either side of the YESS mount, ten lug 20" bass drum, die-cast claw hooks with rubber isolators, Absolute lugs, etc
In closing, I'd go so far as to say that these drums are perfect from the perspective of sound, quality, looks and price.
