High-definition Omni Mic Matched Pair with Massive SPL Handling

Specifically designed for recording thunderous drums and high-volume guitar and bass amplifiers, the Earthworks TC20 small-diaphragm condenser microphones boast a massive 150dB of SPL handling. Their omnidirectional polar pattern allows you to close-mike any source without proximity effect, making the TC20 a go-to kick drum mic for capturing accurate low end along with crisp transients. Additionally, the Earthworks TC20 microphones excel as drum overheads. Featuring a ruler-flat frequency response from 9Hz to 20kHz, they provide a natural representation of any sound source. When engineers at Sweetwater look to preserve an instrument's natural character without hype or additional color, they reach for Earthworks microphones. And, with the Earthworks TC20 matched pair, you'll enjoy high-definition sound on even the loudest sources!

Earthworks TC20 Small-diaphragm Condenser Microphone Matched Pair Features:

Reviews

Stellar
I have yet to find an issue with any Earthworks gear. I like their kick mic and there other "overhead" mics that I have used. I was torn between the TC20 ane the SR25 as I could use both right now. I figured I would buy the TC20 for now and then the others. I am so glad I did. They have been useful for drums, live grand piano concert, concert harp and I also used them grabbing a big band. Perfection in every sence of the word.

They're omnis.
I've been using these mics for years. I saw just one review here and it is negative, so I felt I should respond. These are omnidirectional mics. Of course they will pick up room sounds. But, because they have no noticeable proximity effect, you can close mic (very close) and eliminate room sound if it's a problem. These mics are incredibly flat and natural sounding. Hang a pair in a room, throw on some headphones and you'll forget you have headphones on. You're "in" the room. I love these mics for many acoustic instruments. And if you're looking for drum room mics, it doesn't get any better than this.

This mic should get more love
For the first 20 years of my recording career, I stayed away from Earthworks mics because of their "loud" characteristic. This was especially true of the TC20 since its self-noise figure of 26dB seems downright noisy. If you read the forums for acoustical recording folk, then this noise figure and this mic are a non-starter. Instead, I would use omnis from Schoeps, Gefell, and DPA. They're fantastic mics, but at 3-8x the cost of this mic, I would never have considered this as a serious contender.

However, I needed a pair of omnis at a lower cost so I purchased these thinking they would get relegated to last-ditch mics should I need them. To my surprise, after I put them up and recorded a (quieter) ensemble with them, I was actually blown away. They have a certain effect to them that I simply can't describe. The closest I can get is this - they sound extremely natural. They give you the sound on tape EXACTLY as you hear it in the hall. And if you haven't experienced this yet (if you haven't used these mics, you haven't) the moment you do, you will honestly never be able to hear mics the same way again.

Still worried about the noise? Well, for most people, I say "don't." If you're using these for on-location classical or ensemble recording, unless you're recording a top level ensemble in a top level space, the noise from these mics will not rise above the regular noise floor. In general, I expect that a good hall will get me a noise floor of -60dBfs to -65dBfs. A normal hall (good high school, quiet church) will be -50dBfs to -55dBfs. Even with a modest preamp and these mics, you'll never hear the mic self-noise above that. Also, while I have been able to use them in incredibly quiet spaces, the noise that I do hear is very organic in nature and does not call attention to itself.

I will absolutely be purchasing another set of Earthworks - likely the QTC30 or QTC40s and using these along with those for so much of my recording work. If you're on the fence, honestly, just try them. You won't return them.

Mics for High Volume Sources
This was my first set of small diaphram condensers, maybe I was expecting something different, but I have to say these were a disappointment to me. No matter what kind of preamp I used, it seemed the TC20's picked up a lot of extra white room noise. I found this disturbing and not very useful to record in a home studio setting. Worked much better recording a louder jazz combo and I imagine it would work well recording a nice loud acoustic drum kit, as overheads. As long as you have a high level of volume, to overcome the low level white background noise, they seem to work well enough Just not sure if I"ll find as much use for these as I'd hoped.

Earthworks microphones delight and amaze my customers time and time again. All of their mics are incredibly detailed, natural and life-like in the studio and on the stage. The SRO Box Set is a wonderful opportunity for all musicians to own a matched pair of these incredible microphones.
