Fresh Take on a Legendary Double Cut

The Thinline series represents Eastman’s take on a genuinely classic semi-hollow design that all guitarists know and love — and the handsome T486B-RD Thinline really makes a bold statement! With a semi-hollow body carved to that iconic double-cutaway shape, reinforced with a feedback-fighting center block, and topped in a vibrant maple veneer, this comfortable Thinline offers a low-profile feel and vivid organic voicing that perfectly sets the tone for its electronic outfit. The pickups at hand? An exceptional set of Phat Cat P-90s. Fully equipped for sonic contouring to your heart’s content with per-pickup Volume and Tone controls, the T486B-RD Thinline comes crafted to curate a classic single-coil sound to suit myriad musical directions. It plays like a dream, too, courtesy of Eastman’s Traditional Even “C” neck profile and 12-inch-radiused ebony fingerboard. Fully bound and appointed with rock-steady Gotoh, Bigsby, and Pingwell hardware, the T486B-RD Thinline stands to deliver marvelous musical, functional, and stylistic appeal to every stage it sees.

Bright and clear with a low-profile feel

The T486B-RD Thinline combines a charismatic and articulate maple top with a back and sides of laminated maple to match, presenting a bright and forward tonewood combination that highlights every note with vivid clarity. A double-cut body shape enables effortless control of every fret, and its ultra-narrow body profile remains maneuverable and provides unobtrusive access for all strumming arms. Its Traditional Even “C”-profiled neck, also of maple, prolongs its natural vividity and ease of command with a universally comfortable grip in hand, complemented by a 22-fret and sustain favoring ebony fingerboard that’s radiused to a smooth playing 12 inches and primed for pleasurable playability. All this to say? Just as the T486B-RD Thinline puts the music first with its natural tone, it will put you first in terms of comfort with its exquisite playing feel.

Voiced by Seymour Duncan

Don’t be fooled by their humbucker sizing — the Seymour Duncan Phat Cats that equip the T468-RD Thinline are true P-90 soapbars at heart. Offering an edge that standard single- and dual-coils can’t, these Phat Cats growl and attack with compressed midrange grit by way of a pair of alnico II bar magnets. Unleash open chords and bask in a vibrant display of harmonic overtones fit for a variety of musical occasions, from rock to pop, alternative, and beyond. Dial in the optimal tonal foundation for your tune with a 3-way pickup selector, and shape your sonic vision to a tee using the per-pickup Volume and Tone controls.

A stylishly stable player

A fluid player across the stage and studio, the T486B-RD Thinline comes armed with a hardware assortment that guarantees proper playability is maintained for lengthy sets and sessions. First, a Gotoh Tune-o-matic bridge and an accompanying Bigsby B70 vibrato tailpiece offer an anchoring full of sustain, rugged dependability, and exciting pitch-dipping freedom. The same can be said for its Pingwell tuning machines, met with a neighboring real bone nut for a natural string response as classic as its silhouette. And if it’s charm you’re after, it’s charm you’ll get! Its tuning machine buttons feature that classic Ivoroid outline, matched in vintage appeal by its double body binding and old-school black bell knobs. Stability? Check. Style? Check. The T486B-RD Thinline has it all!

Reviews

Fantastic instrument, exceptional value!

I was looking for a ES335 style guitar but I was not prepared to spend $ price tag for a Gibson, not to mention that it would cost even more to get one with a flame maple top, and a bigsby. I was looking at several affordable alternatives but none of them seemed to connect with me.

I was finally able to try an Eastman T486B in goldburst finish. The first thing that I noticed is that the guitar felt like a solid, quality instrument compared to some of the alternatives I'd tried. The neck is easy playing, low profile, and feels great. The build quality is top-notch. In addition, it had several unexpected features that made it the clear winner: nitro lacquer finish (making it feel more natural), beautiful flame top, bone nut, bigsby trem (that stays in tune). The only feature that I wasn't looking for were the Phat Cat P-90 pickups. The other unexpected surprise with this guitar is the hardshell case (it's the best guitar case I've seen for a guitar at any price point, its amazingly good).

This guitar has quickly become one of my very favorite guitars to play. The sustain is amazing and the Phat Cat pickups can cover a lot of sonic territory that a more traditional humbucker-equipped 335 may not. For example, you can get a fantastic twang from the bridge and middle position that are perfect for rockabilly and country kinds of playing. The neck pickup is excellent for doing the Larry Carlton thing, or classic Blues tones. I've also been using this guitar for playing slide and it sings, especially with the neck pickup. I've been using this guitar to cover everything from Jump-Blues, to classic Alman Brothers sounds, to Chet Atkins and it delivers.

All in all, this is a fantastic guitar, rivaling anything that you might buy from Gibson. This guitar was a fantastic find, and I'm surprised that I'm not seeing more people playing these, they're the very best 335 alternative I've found anywhere. If you find one, buy it, you won't be disappointed!
