The Apogee Interface for Smaller Studios

Apogee has been developing cutting-edge pro audio technology since 1985. Most recently, the company’s Symphony Mk II set the industry standard for multichannel network audio interfacing in commercial recording and post-production facilities. Now, the Apogee Symphony Studio Series audio interfaces provide a cost-effective, state-of-the-art, non-networked solution for high-end recording, immersive mixing, and mastering in smaller studios with more modest channel count requirements. Equipped with Symphony MkII–class converters, transparent mic preamps with 75dB of gain, I/O up to eight mic/line inputs and 16 line-level outputs, built-in DSP, onboard speaker calibration, and much more, Apogee Symphony Studio Series interfaces are available in three models to suit your specific needs.

Meet the Symphony Studio Series

All three Apogee Symphony Studio Series interfaces offer a powerful, no-nonsense solution for modern workflows and channel formats; however, they have differing I/O specifications to handle different types of projects. Equipped with two mic/line inputs and 12 line outs, the Apogee Symphony Studio 2 x 12 interface meets the needs of budget-conscious studios involved in up to 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos mixing. With eight mic/line inputs and eight line outs, the Symphony Studio 8 x 8 is the spiritual successor to Apogee’s legacy Ensemble interface, but delivers significantly improved performance and higher fidelity, enhanced by the inclusion of input and output DSP. Lastly, the Symphony Studio 8 x 16 provides eight mic/line inputs and 16 line outs to satisfy the requirements of immersive audio projects requiring 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos configurations.

Apogee Symphony Studio 2 x 12:

  • 2 mic/line inputs, 12 line outputs
  • Supports up to 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos configurations

Apogee Symphony Studio 8 x 8:

  • 8 mic/line inputs, 8 line outputs
  • High-performance interface for non-immersive formats

Apogee Symphony Studio 8 x 16:

  • 8 mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs
  • Supports up to 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos configurations

Industry-leading sound quality

Infused with Apogee’s uncompromising sound quality, the Symphony Studio Series interfaces are equipped with everything smaller studios need to thrive in a competitive industry. All three models include Symphony MkII–class converters that provide pristine, audiophile-grade AD/DA conversion. Featuring transparent mic preamps with a robust 75dB of gain on tap, these interfaces transform mic selection into an artistic decision, rather than a technical one. When you can choose microphones for their sonic merits rather than their output, you can deploy your prized low-output passive ribbon mic on a quiet source without a second thought. Very liberating, in a creative sense!

Features, performance, and value

Other Symphony Studio Series features include dual independent headphone outputs, hardware DSP speaker calibration with EQ, delay, and bass management, immersive audio support up to 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos configurations, advanced immersive monitor control with support for up to two subwoofers, low-latency direct monitoring, an input DSP channel strip, and more. With their plug-and-play USB-C connectivity, Symphony Studio Series audio interfaces seamlessly integrate into your macOS or Windows DAW-based workflow. Sweetwater’s advice: Offering smaller studios the same core advantages that large commercial facilities enjoy with Symphony Mk II, the Apogee Symphony Studio Series delivers the features, performance, and value you’re looking for.

Reviews

Good sound but very limited feature set.
The conversion on this unit sounds great, but it's disappointing that at this price point you cannot monitor with onboard FX, nor is there even a basic reverb plugin available for tracking. Even the most affordable MOTU hardware and software include this functionality. Until Apogee addresses this in a software update, I would recommend other options for anyone who needs to track and mix with monitoring effects. And if Apogee is reading this — no, monitoring FX from the DAW while lowering the buffer to the point of choking plugins is not an acceptable workaround.
