Shred from Sunrise to Sunset-6

“Schecter Guitar Research” is no mere catchphrase. Every axe in Schecter’s repertoire — classic and contemporary — results from meticulous work by their luthiers, sparing no effort to deliver a bona fide shred machine. The indelibly articulate Sunset-6 is no exception, outfitted with premium appointments to ensure no punch is pulled with every lick and lead. Superlative tonewoods comprising maple, rosewood, nyatoh, and ebony culminate in a sonorous mix of substantial sustain, excellent articulation, and heaps of tonal heft. A high-speed neck complements a 25.5-inch scale, sprawling with 24 frets of unfettered riff-crafting potential. Guitarists at Sweetwater especially appreciate the menagerie of Schecter’s house-made hardware, from their locking tuners and hardtail bridge to their Schecter USA pickups to bring these high-octane sonics to life.

Premium tonal appointments for flexible firepower

Luthiers at Schecter spared no effort in devising the optimal mix of tonewoods to deliver superlative shred-sonics with the Sunset-6 Extreme. Its tonal profile is anchored by its nyatoh body, known for its blossoming harmonics, musical overtones, and mid-heavy tone. The neck boasts a dyad of maple and rosewood to impart bright articulation throughout every register, bolstered by the rosewood’s crystalline sheen. Up top, an ebony fingerboard serves up serious sustain with unrivaled clarity. Taken together, the Sunset-6 Extreme elicits evocative tones, melding aural heft with sustaining distinction to ensure everything from raucous riffs to searing solos is always at its best.

Superlative speed meets uncompromising accessibility

Choosing to pair maple and rosewood in the Sunset-6 Extreme’s neck does more than just provide a delightfully complex sonic array. It supplements your sound with a dimensional stability to prevent from warping or twisting, making it a great choice for gigging and touring musicians. What’s more, a carefully sculpted heel and cutaway are complemented by an Ultra Thin “C” neck profile to comfortably accommodate speed and access to all 24 frets across its 16-inch fingerboard radius and 25.5-inch scale. Schecter locking tuners and their Diamond Hardtail Plus bridge bookend your strings, joined by a Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL nut for reliable intonation and buzz-free tones.

In-house pickups optimized for performance

Keeping with their namesake research, the Sunset-6 Extreme is outfitted with a pair of Schecter USA humbuckers that leverage a passive design. In the neck, a Pasadena pickup utilizes direct-coupled Alnico V magnets for smooth yet articulate tones. The bridge, on the other hand, hosts a Sunset Strip pickup with direct-coupled Ceramic 8 magnets, harmonizing heat and heft to bolster wild riffs and serious chug. Both pickups feature a split-coil design, and the accompanying 5-way selector ensures pain-free traversal of tremendous tonal territories, further streamlined by the sole master volume knob to minimize clutter and maximize tone-crafting possibilities.

This one djents

It pretty much comes out of the box ready to rock. At the time of writing, Sweetwater's product page doesn't say what gauges this one comes with but mine came with what appears to be a 46-10 set. It stayed surprisingly tense when tuning down to drop C.

Lets talk about this bridge pickup. Originally, I thought I'd instantly want to swap it out for something from Bare Knuckle but this thing absolutely shreds. The voicing and output of this thing is just correct. The lows are about the tightest I've heard so far and the mids are pretty growly. All of that without the brittle high end bump that you get with a lot of other pickups that are similarly voiced. I haven't needed to plug in any boosts or distortion with this thing yet. If John Browne didn't already have his own signature pickup set with Schecter, I think this one would be pretty well aligned with his taste.

The build is really decent for the money. The body is pretty light and the neck has just the right amount of dive to make it comfortable to hold still. I'm knocking half a star off as I feel the ebony fingerboard could have used a little more finishing/sanding, and there's a small little splash of what looks like paint on the bottom side of the fingerboard towards the neck pickup area.

Overall, super pleased with this axe and with Sweetwater's service as always.

Disappointed

Let me start off by saying Sweetwater customer support is phenomenal, they did everything to remedy the issues I was having.

This guitar sounds and plays amazingly, one of the best offerings from Schecter under $ bar none. The pickups are extremely clear, the tuning stability is rock solid, and this thing sustains for days. The one issue that was an absolute deal breaker… the loud metallic pinging noise when palm muting on the A string.

Plugged it into my amp to test it out for the first time and the pinging is so bad that it's creating feedback that makes it essentially unusable. Figured it was a defect so I return to sweetwater to exchange it for the same model, unfortunately the exchange had the same problem so this is obviously a design flaw. I'm a lifelong fan of Schecter, and will probably give them another chance, but this model needs help. It's a shame, it's a NEAR perfect instrument, it hurt to have to return it. Maybe I'll just stick with a hellraiser…

Poor fit and finish

The fit and finish was worse than that of my Pacifica, which cost me 1/3 what the Schecter did. The bridge humbucker was crooked (front-to-back). The saddles had tool marks. The inside of the pickup selector well wasn't painted. The wood under the front strap knob had a soft spot and easily caved in when I installed a Dunlop Straplok. The Schecter Sunset-6 Extreme is the guitar that made me swear off online guitar purchases forever.
