US-Custom-Shop-built Schecter

Straight from Schecter's US Custom Shop comes the Sunset Custom II. This top-shelf S-style guitar features an ash body capped with eye-catching quilted maple. With the Sunset Custom II, you can expect a sublime balance of brightness, warmth, and midrange "pop," along with plenty of bite. Benefit from an endless array of tones, courtesy of a pair of Schecter's legendary SuperCharger humbuckers. And as for playability, this guitar's vintage-satin-finished pau ferro-capped neck was built for breaking speed barriers. Complete with a tremolo bridge for twisting, bending, and dive-bombing, Schecter's Sunset Custom II is the axe you've been waiting for.

Top-notch construction

As soon as you put your hands on this guitar, you'll realize why guitarists such as Pete Townshend, Synyster Gates, and Nick Johnston have all been ambassadors for the brand. This Sunset Custom II features an ash body — a popular choice for its balance of brightness, warmth, and midrange "pop." And to bring even more sustain and bite to the party, Schecter caps this Sunset Custom II with an eye-catching quilted maple top.

Powerfully voiced electronics

This Sunset Custom II is fitted with SuperCharger Mach-6 humbuckers that infuse this Sunset Custom II with extreme clarity, robust mids, and enough output to push your amp into sonic euphoria. The versatile SuperCharger Mach-6 is equally suited to chunky rhythms and molten leads. The guitarists at Sweetwater love the thick and fluid tone of these humbuckers!

Just-right playability

This Schecter Sunset Custom II's neck is expertly carved from a piece of rock-hard maple. Pau ferro caps the neck with a 14" radius. Its Custom "C" profile is an exquisite balance of hand-filling comfort and fleet-fingered playability. Add a fingerboard outfitted with a Graph Tech black TUSQ nut for enhanced tone and sustain, and this Sunset Custom II plays as beautifully as it looks.

Rated 5/5

Schecter USA Sunset Custom II

I am completely in awe! It is the best sounding guitar I have ever owned! And that"s comparing it to all my high end Gibson and PRS guitars. Where has Schecter been all my life?! I had never played a Schecter, but had always wanted to. It is constructed perfectly. I am a stickler for detail, and I could not find one thing out of place! Perfectly set up and intonated out of the case. Very comfortable thin C shaped neck profile. Frets perfectly dressed. I'm not sure if they are stainless steel, but they are high quality. Mach pickups are powerful, but still clear and articulate, very well balanced. Schecter is definitely a real high class custom shop! This guitar is of PRS private stock quality. The quilt top is nothing less than amazing! The pau ferro fingerboard is beautiful and feels very smooth on the fingers. I believe it adds a snappier, brighter tone than rosewood. Similar to Ebony. The back plates are metal, not cheap plastic that scratches! Pickups can be split. Very versatile guitar that is suited for any type of music. I play mostly classic and 80's rock. Best of all, very reasonably priced compared to PRS and Gibson.

Almost Great

Overall it"s a nice guitar. Almost on par with Suhr and Anderson guitars in terms of fit and finish, I"d say 7/10. I will list pros and cons below

Pros:
Well built overall, good fit and finish and nicely done fretwork.
Great quality G&G hard shell case.
Very woody and focused sounding tones.
Great quality hardware, Gotoh trem, hipshot locking tuners, etc.
Pickups are surprisingly good, very articulate and warm for ceramic pickups.

Cons:
Setup was not very good. Although the fret work was well done, they were not dressed well enough for a nice low action. It was impossible to get low action without major buzz and chocked notes. In order for this to be remedied the guitar would need a new nut, fret dress and shimmed neck. I still do not understand why so many guitar companies do not set guitars up with low action from the factory or custom shop....it is easier to raise action from a low point than vice versa.
Uneven tone. While the guitar had a sweet tone, the highs were a bit harsh and the lows a bit dark. Even adjusting the pickups it was hard to strike a balance of tone across the neck.
Frets were medium but low profile, so they were in fact pretty low. This combined with a fairly fat neck huh action made playability even less fun.
No treble bleed circuit, Turing down the volume knob lost all high end detail. I play through a Freidman BE100 which is know for its remarkable ability to clean up in a chimney way, this guitar just got dark and lost when doing so.
The top was not that pretty in person. The top while nice, was in no way as nice as the offerings from Suhr, PRS, or Anderson. It looked shallow and drawn on. I don"t really care about crazy tops, but at $3100 I expect perfection that I find in other brands in the range, especially in the ability to get decent action. Maybe if it were $1700 I could compromise a bit more.
Also no stainless steel frets....

I did return the guitar, and will be buying something else I am familiar with.

Super amazing service as always from Sweetwater. The best BIG guitar store there is. My sales Engineer Michael Grebe is the best and always delivers. Thanks Sweetwater for the great service and even greater return policy.
