A New Look and Feel for the American Pro II Stratocaster

The American Professional II Thinline Stratocaster is Fender’s take on combining the best of vintage Thinline guitars with modern Strat appointments, resulting in a uniquely sounding guitar in a familiar body shape. This guitar boasts a semi-hollow ash body with three V-Mod single-coil Strat pickups that deliver a great mix of midrange punch, clear highs, and classic Strat twang. The chrome 2-point tremolo with a cold-rolled steel block and Fender’s standard cast staggered tuning machines offer increased playability and will stay in tune even with excessive tremolo use. A Deep “C” maple neck with a “Super-Natural” satin finish comfortably fits in your hands and allows you to explore the neck seamlessly with no drag. Lastly, the American Pro II Thinline Strat features a 9.5-inch rosewood fingerboard with classic dot inlays that is aesthetically appealing and will make any Strat-purest happy. If you have been eyeing a new twist on a timeless classic, this guitar is for you!

Vintage-inspired semi-hollow Strat body

When Fender introduced the American Professional II series, the company envisioned a class of specialty guitars built for the gigging musician — the Thinline Stratocaster takes that to a whole new level. This guitar maintains the timeless design of the classic Fender Strat while incorporating elements of the Thinline series. With a visually stunning and resonant “F” soundhole on a harmonically rich single-cut ash body, the Thinline Strat boasts gorgeous acoustic qualities while unplugged and a unique semi-hollow tone when paired with an amp. It offers a warm, resonant sound with enhanced sustain and a slightly mellower character compared to traditional solidbody Strats, making it great for players looking for a one-of-a-kind Strat sound and aesthetic.

Classic Strat tones with V-Mod II Pickups

For a company that has been at the forefront of tonal experimentation and pushing boundaries, you’d think Fender has played all its cards by now — but that’s not the case. The Fender V-Mod II pickups for the American Professional II series harken back to the golden age of the Strat people have been longing for but with modern-style pickup appointments. The V-Mod II pickups retain all the definition, harmonic attributes, and twang reminiscent of vintage Strats while significantly improving clarity and articulation. And with the 5-way toggle switch, you can mix and match the three pickups for unparalleled sonic exploration. Add in the semi-hollowbody, and you have a tonal behemoth that can achieve a wide variety of sounds.

Effortlessly playable deep “C” neck

With the American Professional II series, Fender set out to upgrade the neck to something players have asked for years: a more rounded and fitting "C"-shaped neck. By rounding out the back contour of the regular "C" shape, the Deep "C" comfortably fits most player's hands without changing their playing style. Add in Fender's "Super-Natural" satin finish, and you have a revolutionary new neck profile that improves playability and is easier on your hands. Sounds like a win-win to us! Just pick up the American Professional Thinline Strat and learn for yourself why so many guitarists at Sweetwater are calling this their new go-to guitar.

Reviews

American Pro II line is really good
This is my second American Pro II guitar, and I liked the first so much, when these limited editions dropped, I got one as soon as I could. I'm thrilled with the one Sweetwater sent me.

The first thing to mention on all these Am Pro II models is the necks. They're just lovely. The fretboard edges are like running your hand along a stick of butter. The rolled edges, the smooth fret ends, and the smooth but not sticky finish on the backs. Go try one out at a music shop to see for yourself. I've picked up loads of them, and the consistency is astonishing.

The pickups are also terrific. My other is the Tele deluxe, and those "tappable" humbuckers always sound great, and the V-Mod 2 strat pickups are just as satisfying. I was so happy when I ran these through every effect pedal I have, and the sound was consistently exactly what I was hoping for.

I had been saving for one of the strats in this series when these thinline ash bodied models dropped, and I didn't really know how it would compare to the solid alder. Surprisingly, they're not actually lighter. Mine comes in at 7lb, 15oz, which is about what you'd expect from a solid body. The transparent finish is really well done, however, and you can see that it's all one piece, or at least the top is one piece and the back is one piece, but it's possible it's a top glued to a back. And the bare grain you can see through the F Hole is really pretty.

The pickguasrds on these seem pretty divisive, and obviously I like it or I wouldn't have bought it, but they look terrific in person. I was surprised how thick the 4-ply guard and trem cover are, as my previous ones are all 3 ply or less. My wife says it looks like a pile of fallen leaves. I think it looks like those NASA photos of the surface of the sun. Regardless, they're definitely different from any other Fender pickguards I've seen, and I'm a sucker for variants.

Everything else feels really high quality. The jack, the bridge, the tuners, the switch, the knobs including the push-push all feel really sweet. All the slots on the bone nut are the proper height, the action is nice and low, the intonation was spot on out of the box... the only adjustment I made was to lower the float height of the bridge, which is super easy.

I know we can be guilty of confirmation bias on the guitars we buy, telling ourselves we've made a sound purchase, but it's day three with my new strat, and I'm over the moon. I can't think of anything I could want from a strat that this thing doesn't have. I feel extremely lucky to have one.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them! So, whether you’re looking for your first axe or a Custom Shop creation, make sure to give your Sweetwater Sales Engineer a call at (800) 222-4700.
