The Fender Player Series Strat Plus Top

The Fender Stratocaster is considered by many guitarists at Sweetwater to be the classic solidbody electric guitar. Introduced in 1954, the Strat has flaunted its svelte body curves, tonal dexterity, and expressive vibrato in the capable hands of guitarists cross-genre. At once a working musician's axe and cultural icon, the Fender Player Series Stratocaster Plus Top takes the grand tradition into the future with a gorgeous figured maple top, vibrant vintage-inspired finishes, a fast-action 22-fret maple neck, and three Player Series Alnico 5 Strat pickups that deliver all the legendary spank and sparkle you expect from a Strat.

Fender's Player Series: vintage vibe, modern edge

For their new Player Series guitars, Fender went back to the drawing board with updated radii for more historically accurate body shapes, new vintage-inspired finishes, and a classic logo that harkens back to the Fenders of yesteryear. But these smooth-playing instruments also look to the future with modern enhancements that include 22 fret necks, upgraded bridges for better sustain, and new Alnico 5 pickups that crank out legendary Fender tone by the boatload.

The timeless classic, with Player Series upgrades

Though the original Stratocaster was first introduced more than 60 years ago, it's unquestionably more popular now than ever. The Player Series Stratocaster Plus Top combines the guitar's sleek, elegant lines with the perfect blend of vintage and modern features. You start with the classic comfort-contoured alder body and figured maple top with a gloss polyester finish, then add a 3-ply parchment pickguard and a trio of Player Series Alnico 5 Strat single-coil pickups. The Strat's original master volume plus two tone pot configuration left the bridge pickup without a tone control; but in the Player Series Strat, Tone 1 operates on both the neck and middle pickups, while Tone 2 is dedicated to the bridge pickup.

The trademark Strat sound

Leo Fender designed the original Stratocaster with three single-coil pickups, enabling it to produce sounds that no other guitar could — particularly once players discovered they could lodge the 3-position blade switch in those in-between positions to access polarity-reversed neck/middle and bridge/middle pickup combinations that produced what is affectionately called the Strat "quack." The Fender Player Series Stratocaster Plus Top comes with three sweet-sounding single-coil pickups selected by a modern, 5-position blade switch, making it easy to nail those glassy Strat sounds with a flick of the switch.

Fast-playing modern C-shaped maple neck

In keeping with contemporary player preferences, the Player Series Stratocaster sports a comfortable modern C shape maple neck and a 9.5"-radius fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets. The neck is finished with a smooth satin polyurethane for a sleek, fast feel. With its sleek body contours and highly playable neck, it's no wonder that the Fender Stratocaster has remained one of the most popular guitars on the planet for decades.

Fender Player Series Stratocaster Plus Top Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Comfort-contoured alder body with figured maple top, gloss polyester finish
  • Maple, modern C-shaped neck (satin polyurethane finish)
  • 9.5"-radius fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets
  • 3 Player Series Alnico 5 Strat single-coil pickups
  • Fender 2-point "Synchronized Tremolo" floating vibrato bridge/tailpiece
  • Fender standard cast/sealed tuning machines
  • Synthetic bone nut, width: 1.650"
  • 25.5" scale length
  • Chrome hardware

Won Me Over!

A couple of years ago, I saw this guitar at a national guitar store chain who shall remain nameless. I've never been a Strat guy but I was captivated by the color and the flame maple top. It happened to be plugged in so I picked it up and started picking away. I was floored by how good it sounded! I fell in love with it. The store was a couple doors down from where my girlfriend worked, so every time I'd go to pick her up, I'd go in and lust after this guitar. She wound up getting the exact one I played for me for Christmas that year. It's such a fun instrument to play! Plays and sounds as good as it looks!

Flawless!

Was looking for a Strat to break the mold of the guitar I currently have, and this baby nailed it. From the single coil action, to the BEAUTIFUL color on the guitar it's just amazing. Between Fender and Sweetwater, this guitar is well worth the price and some. Huge shoutout to Kurt for helping me get the exact one I wanted as well! Very helpful, great guitar, shipping was speedy. No complaints whatsoever. Thanks guys!

Very Happy

I'm a new player who's been having a blast learning on an acoustic over more than four months. I've been playing every day, steadily building my skills while researching electrics. This was a little over my beginner's budget and was not even in stock, but I lucked out when a demo model became available. (only minor scratches on the pickguard and spring cover as noted by Sweetwater; otherwise in mint condition)

As another reviewer mentioned, it is hard to photograph as the texture of the flamed top changes slightly as light hits it at different angles, making it far more striking in person than in photos.

I haven't changed a thing. So far, after more than a week, I'm not having trouble with tuning and I think it sounds great. It sounds like I'd expect a Strat to sound.

Coming from a guitar with a glossy neck, I find the satin finish on this neck far more comfortable to play on. I'm also really happy with the shape of the neck and feel of the fretboard.

I've read reports of some guitars having high or uneven frets causing unavoidable buzzing, but there is no sign of that here. Any properly fretted note rings out without buzzing. Not that I was really concerned about that in a Player Series Fender, but something I checked anyway.

The only minor annoyance was there were frayed remnants of the protective shipping film that covers the neck plate stuck under the screw heads. I had to slightly unscrew each one to get the rest out. It seems strange to me that they would put the screws in over the film, but it was a minor problem easily solved.

It’s me again

I’m still loving this thing. Only thing I’ve done is block the trem and changed out the stark white plastics to antique. Here’s how that looks if you’re interested.

OBTW: I got the kit at Sweetwater of course!
