Coveted ’61 Stratocaster Charm

In the heyday of early-’60s surf rock, Fender and several guitarists were on a quest to uncover the perfect Strat sound. Everything from the newly manufactured Alnico III single-coil pickup down to the nitro gloss finish was manipulated with the goal of distilling Stratocaster tone like no other. With the American Vintage II Strat, Fender has now brought back the quintessential 1961 model with unparalleled authenticity. Built with alder and maple, and rosewood tonewoods and featuring an exclusive trio of single-coil Strat pickups, the ’61 Strat is a perfect emulation of a beloved axe classic. Considering it retains the same “C” neck profile and familiar fretboard access, holding an American Vintage II guitar feels akin to wielding an instrument rife with legendary 20th-century tone.

Classic Strat maneuverability

The shape, feel, and build of a guitar are the first things you notice before you’re about to play. With that idea in mind, Fender took care in making sure that the American Vintage II ’61 Strat was as authentically manufactured as its predecessor. The same classic “C”-shape neck profile completes the ’61 Strat’s true maneuverability, allowing you to glide between notes. An accurately designed alder, maple, and rosewood construction feels like holding an authentic musical artifact, while amounting to a sturdy build. Topped off with a delicate nitro gloss finish, this Strat is the closest thing to grabbing a real-deal axe off the line in 1961.

Definitive single-coil trio

What’s the most iconic detail of a ’61 Strat? Its mid-end punch and bright treble tone, of course! Lined with three Pure Vintage ’61 single-coil Strat pickups, you’ll revel in this guitar's mid-century audial palette, including singing high notes, textured rhythms, and everything in between. The classic Stratocaster control panel includes a 5-way pickup switch and twin tone knobs, letting you maximize your output to your desired taste. Tied together with a single volume knob and easy access to a vintage synchronized tremolo, you’ll be able to conjure up any tone that crosses your creative wit.

American Vintage II authenticity

As with Fender’s first American Vintage series, the American Vintage II line of guitars strive to be as accurate as possible in terms of looks, build, tone, and appointments. When you’re buying an American Vintage II guitar, you’re not only getting a classic-looking axe, but you’re also afforded handpicked vintage-style hardware that’s designed to emulate the performance of a true 20th century instrument. When it comes to gear, Sweetwater musicians are big fans of the classics. Trust us: after playing an American Vintage II guitar, it’s not easy to put it down.

Fender American Vintage II 1961 Stratocaster Electric Guitar Features:

  • Alder, maple, and rosewood construction provide a vintage build with added stability and comfort
  • Authentic 1961 “C”-shape neck profile provides maximum maneuverability and a solid hold on your fretboard

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While Certified Open Box items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:

Best Strat I've ever had
This will be the 4th Stratocaster I have owned. There was always something not quite right with the others and they ended up traded in or sold. I actually wasn't looking to buy a guitar. I happened to try one out locally and it immediately felt like it was my guitar. The slim C neck, fretboard and color all just clicked for me. When I ordered it from Sweetwater I also added the Plek setup and it was well worth it. For me the key to a guitar is the neck shape. I can play most kinds of necks, but this one fits my hand just right. Plus the Fiesta Red is such a great color. Plugged into my tube amp the cleans are full and three dimensional. Sparkle but not too bright. The setup action from Sweetwater is spot on. The guitar just wants to be played.

To add to the overall experience, Anthony was fantastic in providing me feedback, taking my input and immediately responding to questions I had. I needed one small part on a string saddle and he had the replacement to me as soon as I brought it up. I would, and have, buy from Sweetwater again with no qualms at all. It has been a fantastic experience.

Great sound, but consider this,,,
First off, I absolutely believe that this instrument sounds classic and feels like a quality guitar. It doesn't take on the toy-tone that some other more affordable Strats seem to emulate. Here are some things that are true about my recent purchase: The string action isn't easy..not on arrival.it was a fight for me. All the talk of how Stratocasters are "easy to play, with perfect form and function"…..um, no. I went straight to a professional to have it set up so I could at least play it. If dropping over 2 grand for a guitar that still needs another $ for a setup is disturbing, then you should stop here. It also bugs me that position four does not change then hum factor in any way. It's still 60 cycle fun-ness unless you face some odd angle and don't intend to move. I almost considered a different pickup set before realizing how much that would devalue my purchase. The stock pickups are extremely bright and brilliant, emulating the classic chime of a Strat, however position 5 is too brittle for me - still not a deal breaker.

Here's what doesn't bother me: the reddish swirl in the fretboard. I kind of like it. The guitar case - it's fine. Not recommended if you are tossing it on a bus and running away from bar fight. Sitting at home, or a weekender with friends in a jam band - it does the job. Yeah, you're thinking about that $ again, I know….but the case works.

The good stuff: it's a stunner. Beautiful fiesta red. This is the guitar I've always wanted. Yeah, I'm a huge Mark Knofler fan, so that's part of it. From what I hear from other players, Fender ought to be throwing a few coins Mark's way with the selling of this classic. Most of us will never afford the actual signature version anyway. The feel of the neck and gloss - yes, it feels a little sticky…but the thicker C shape feels perfect for me. It's not a baseball bat that my tele is. I'll be keeping it….and adjusting myself around it's specific qualities. There's lots to love about this Strat, but be ready to compromise a little. Also be ready for a well made looker that might be your favorite Strat.

I own a 62 Stratocaster Fender Reissue and they claim a c shape neck but they failed to say if it was a thick or a deep, modern, C shape. I was disappointed to find out the neck goes from a slim at 1st fret to dramatic change to a fatt neck at the 12th register. My '62 is the best Fender Stratocaster I've ever played. Fender got everything right was in 1962 the 61 falls short...

Best Stratocaster
I have had many Stratocasters over the years. This Vintage II guitar feels the best out of all of my guitars and is now my favorite. If you have not played one, just go give it a try. I want to upgrade all of my guitars to the 7.25 radius as I prefer the feel. Great guitar and feels like a true vintage.
Exceeded expectations
I have a lot of Strats, all vintage or Custom Shop. I've always loved Fiesta Red, especially since seeing Gary Moore play Red House on his'61. Decided to save a buck or two and get this production model. It's really good. Beautiful color. Under 8lbs. Great pickups and neck hand feel. I've never had a problem with 7.25 radius and vintage frets and that is so on this: easy bends and vibrato. Needed a set up to my preferred specifications: action, relief. It really seems every bit as good as the Custom Shop, though the Custom is a bit lighter. The vintage guitars' pickups are a bit smoother I guess due to aging of the magnets? All in all I'm pretty pleased with this foray into more austere Strats ( if you consider AVRI 2 austere)
