High Performance Construction and Electronics

The Schecter Sun Valley SS FR-S solidbody electric guitar is a great choice for players looking for a guitar that pushes their technical limits while boasting the features and design to keep up with their every note. The guitar's classic styling recalls some of the best super-style instruments in history. And while an EMG Retro Active humbucking pickup delivers active clarity and passive dynamics, the neck position Sustainiac pickup offers three voices of unending tone. Also, the Schecter Sun Valley SS FR-S's exclusive Hot Rod Floyd Rose tremolo offers precise tuning and pitch control.

Hot-rodded construction

Inspired by souped-up and highly modified rock guitars, the Schecter Sun Valley SS FR-S solidbody electric guitar exudes a no-nonsense, high-performance attitude. It's black pickguard, hardware, and electronics sit on a comfortable S-style mahogany body. A bolt-on hard rock maple neck features a fast Thin-C neck contour and a 24-fret, 14" radius fretboard. And the Sun Valley SS FR-S's neck heel is beautifully contoured, allowing unrestricted access to the guitar's highest frets.

Incredibly powerful electronics

Schecter tapped EMG Pickups and the Sustainiac company to supply the Sun Valley SS FR-S's horsepower. EMG's Retro Active humbucker utilizes a specially designed active preamp system and passive-style coils for a tone that boasts vintage clarity with modern power. The neck-position Sustainiac humbucking pickup effortlessly delivers infinite sustain and thick feedback with a flip of a switch. And a simple-to-use 2-knob control layout works in conjunction with the 3-way blade switch to access a wide variety of tones.

Schecter-exclusive Floyd Rose Trem

Schecter and Floyd rose have partnered to bring you the Floyd Rose Hot Rod double-locking tremolo for a new level of control and stability. Floyd Rose has long been one of the best double-locking tremolo sellers at Sweetwater. And the Hot Rod is a specialized take on their iconic design design that you will only find on select Schecter guitars. The addition of this trem is another appointment that prepares the Sun Valley SS FR-S solidbody electric guitar for your best playing.

Great Metal Guitar

Great guitar for the price. Great for metal and rock. Cleans are alright, but without a single coil pickup or coil tapping, it's not incredibly versatile. I knew that before I bought it, though. The Sustainiac is pretty awesome. You can do dive bombs for days. Maybe literally. I held one for like four minutes. Figured it'll hold as long as the battery lasts. Very comfortable. On the lighter end. Not as light as a Music Man, but lighter than some of the other Schecters I've played. Fret board is smooth. Plays fast. Overall, I'm incredibly happy with my purchase. Basically, 5/5 for metal and rock.

Best axe I’ve ever purchased!

I didn"t know much about this guitar. It had everything I like in a guitar. I bought this Schecter on a whim. It was quite a surprise when I plugged it and started running it through it"s paces. The tone, fast neck, ease of play, etc., surpassed my expectations. I"ve had a lot of guitars in my life. If you"re a rock player, this guitar is quite underrated. All I can say is, I"m glad I got it!

Don’t Sleep On Schecter

My new favorite guitar. Yes, it"s not incredibly versatile for calmer genres due to the fact that the Sustainiac is a mediocre neck pickup when it"s not turned on. But WOW, for rock and metal players, this can"t be beat for the price.

The neck and ease of play is unmatched by any guitar I own, and the Hot Rod Floyd is very solid; reliably stays in tune. The EMG Retro pickup is hot as hell and sounds great on clean or distorted tones. And obviously, the Sustainiac is a Sustainiac.

My first guitar about 12 years ago was a Schecter and I can safely say they have only gotten better, MUCH better. If you stick to rock/metal genres, you will be blown away by this axe!

I'm keeping it

I usually don't order new guitars as I don't like to send them back if I don't like them, but this is a keeper.
This is solid MIK guitar. More that below, but first about Sweetwater.

They inspected it or correctly set it up from Schecter and I did not have to make adjustments out of the box. This may be the first guitar I have 'ordered' new or used where I didn't have to change the bridge/truss/intonation somehow. And it is a pain to do that with a Floyd, especially a floating one like this. Thank you Sweetwater.

As to the sound, it has a slightly different flavor to the Charvels due to the different wood and pickups.

The main reason for this is the Sustainiac. It appears that for 799, you cannot buy another guitar with that pickup new.

Joe Satriani says once you experience the Sustainiac, it is hard to go back to a guitar without it.

I also have a Fernandes Sustainer guitar which has more tweak-ability with the amount of sustain and octive feedback, but I like the overall sound of this guitar better.

It's a compromise

Overall this is a nice guitar. The finish, frets, etc are all done well and it plays very smoothly. It's primarily a rock/metal guitar and in this regard it completely excels. The Sustainiac pickup is an awesome tool for long sustaining notes and feedback, even at low volume.

However if you are looking for more versatility in a guitar, I would recommend you consider the following:

The Sustainiac pickup is basically a hot single coil. When playing clean sounds, it is much quieter than the bridge pickup. Raising it/lowering the bridge pickup has little effect in my experience. With this in mind, if you like to play clean sounds in the middle position (both pickups playing) the bridge pickup will dominate and compensating with reducing the volume for that pickup does not work too well as on other guitars I own. Also should mention that if you are playing the neck pickup and turn the Sustainiac on, the Bridge pickup will take over and you will not be able to play the neck pickup since it then produces the feedback effect. End result: the bridge pickup dominates on this guitar.

The volume knobs are swapped - the bridge pickup's knob is on top (from a playing perspective). May not matter to you, but worth mentioning.

The EMG pickups sound very bright. This works fine for the neck (clean or driven, it sounds warm), but the bridge can sound brittle on high gain sounds. You will have to adjust your amp settings to compensate. Swapping out the default gauge .009 strings to at least .010s will help smooth that out a bit also.

The provided Floyd Rose Special is advertised as a "Hot Rod" Floyd Rose designed for this guitar. The Floyd Rose website shows the "real" Hot Rod FR type to be an original Floyd with a brass block on it for added sustain, but this is not what you are getting here: This is a Floyd Rose SPECIAL which appears to have a "default" sustain block and saddles that are made in Korea of a softer metal. Those should be swapped or replaced with FR Original or FR 1000 series to get better tuning and stability, but you may want to just save yourself some trouble and swap it out for an Original Floyd Rose as soon as possible.

If you own (or have at least played) other Schecters before, you will note they are pretty light weight physically. This is easily the heaviest Schecter I've ever played, and takes some getting used to. I recommend using a strap.

Overall, it's a good guitar but not versatile enough for my liking. Only recommended for metal players.
