The Slö Gets Even Slöer

Building upon Walrus Audio’s modern-classic Slö reverb, the Slöer Stereo Ambient Reverb pedal takes the formula to a whole new realm of lush atmospheres and celestial soundscapes. Fans of the original will be happy to hear that the Slöer comes packed with the former’s stable of reverb algorithms and distinctive modulation waveshapes. You get a grand otal of five masterfully crafted reverb algorithms and five equally idiosyncratic modulation waveshapes, covering everything from sunny octave-up shimmer ’verb to trippy delay tap diffusion to ghostly waves of octave-down undulation. You also get a 3-way switch to set your stereo field, the ability to set your sample rate, and the Sweetwater-favorite “X” knob that unlocks eccentric per-algorithm effects. Complete with adjustable trails, dynamic momentary functions, and saveable presets, the Slöer is truly a masterclass in the art of echo-laden ambience.

Three classic Slö reverbs plus two all-new algorithms

In addition to supplying you with the same reverb algorithms found on the Slö, the Slöer introduces two all-new algorithms for five distinctive echo choices. Plus, the Slöer’s “X” control unlocks a unique per-algorithm parameter to further tweak your tone!

  • Dark: This setting injects a lower octave into your reverb’s trail for a moody, melancholy vibe perfect for crafting eerie dreamscapes. In Dark mode, the X knob allows you to dial in the strength of the octave-down signal that feeds the reverb.
  • Rise: Full of movement and lively energy, Rise is an auto-swell reverb with a mind of its own. Tweak the X knob in Rise mode to adjust how fast the reverb begins to swell after your strike a note.
  • Dream: If you’re after lush, pillowy pads, Dream is sure to impress. This setting sports a unique latching interaction with the Sustain switch, while the X knob dials in the depth of your reverb trail’s vibrato.
  • Rain: This mode offers an idiosyncratic delay tap diffusion that creates a storm of resounding echoes within your reverb tone, with the X control modifying the diffusion of the delay taps.
  • Light: Finally, Light mode gives you a sunny octave-up reverb for classic shimmering soundscapes. Twist the X mode with this algorithm selected to sweep from supple pad-like reverb to angelic shimmer-heavy ambience.

Packed with moody modulation

In essence, the Slöer is all about crafting lush and ghostly soundscapes. A seriously powerful modulation section plays a starring role in the formula, granting you five different waveshapes to choose to rend, twist, and warp your reverb trails. Hold down the bypass switch and turn the algorithm knob to set your waveshape.

  • Sine: Supremely smooth and even up/down pitch modulation.
  • Warp: A wild asymmetrical pitch-up modulation that captures the vibe of a warped record.
  • Sink: Asymmetrical pitch-down modulation, boasting a sound eerily close to a classic guitar vibrato unit.
  • Square: Symmetrical pitch up/down modulation for a stepped, almost rhythmic feel.
  • Random: This waveshape utilizes a sample/hold that picks random values.

A myriad of momentary effects and utility functions

Boasting a vast array of momentary functions and utility features, the Slöer is a veritable instrument unto itself. When testing this pedal out at Sweetwater, one of our favorite features was the dynamic Sustain switch — a momentary (latching in Dream mode) reverb ramp that consistently cranks up your reverb up to the max setting, then cascades back down when released. Looking to add a touch of ambient vibe to a quick passage or melody amid a performance? Hold down the bypass switch when the pedal is disengaged to activate the Slöer’s current algorithm for as long as you have the switch depressed, then release for a smooth taper off that can be adjusted using the Decay knob.

Moreover, the Slöer also comes equipped with a trails mode, allowing you to choose whether your reverb naturally dies down or instantly disengages when you turn the pedal off. And fans of sweeping stereo effects will love the 3-position stereo width control that sets the scale of your stereo field. Lastly, the Slöer takes a note from the Slötva’s book by allowing you to save your favorite presets (accessed by holding down the bypass/sustain switches at once), in addition to a preset spillover function that allows trails when swapping from two presets stemming from the same algorithm.

Walrus Audio Slöer Stereo Ambient Reverb Pedal Features:

  • Builds upon Walrus Audio’s modern-classic Slö reverb pedal with new reverb algorithms, extended modulation capabilities, and drastically enhanced utility features
  • 5 ethereal reverb algorithms to choose from; three from the Slö and the addition of a high octave shimmer (Light) and an echo-laden delay tap diffusion (Rain)
  • X control unlocks algorithm-specific parameters to tweak your tone
  • 3-position Width switch to set the scale of your stereo field
  • Sustain footswitch unlocks a momentary (latching in Dream) ramp-up effect that descends when released
  • Adjustable trails mode allows you to swap between an instantaneous cutoff or a smooth trail decay when the pedal is disengaged
  • Hold down the Bypass switch when the pedal is disengaged to momentarily activate the current reverb setting
  • Access your favorite presets by stomping on the Bypass and Sustain switches simultaneously
  • Adjustable sample rate to further tweak your sound
  • Preset spillover allows for trails to carry over when you switch between 2 presets based on the same algorithm

Reviews

A Compact Powerhouse of Ambient Goodness!
The Sloer takes what was great about the original Slo pedal and makes it even better. What's not to like? The reverb sounds are smooth, textured, and have a lot of character. The stereo mode sounds glorious. And the pedal can run on as little as 100mA. Keep in mind... This unit doesn't have MIDI and it won't give you spring or tight room type sounds. But if you're looking for a compact, lush, ambient maker, the Sloer is hard to beat!

If you're interested, I've done a video where I build a small ambient rig around the Sloer. The challenge was to try and turn my guitar into a symphony. You can check it out below:
Been trying to make this work
I've been trying to make this work in solo and band use and it's okay. However, the lack of a pre-delay is detrimental to me. Great for ambient use but very hard to dial in big verbs in a band with that control messing :(
