Bring Your Groove Back to Where it All Began: the 1970s

A bass too remarkable to be lost to history, the original StingRay has been reanimated in this modern-day-equivalent Retro ’70s StingRay offering from Ernie Ball Music Man. From the start, you’ll notice classic earmarks like the non-contoured slab body, bridge mutes, a 3-bolt neck plate, and coveted 2-band active EQ. This model reignites the classic flame of the first StingRays, packing an ash body, “D”-shaped maple neck, and maple fingerboard ready for all the funky grooves you can muster. In terms of electronics, the Retro ’70s StingRay offers up the powerful sound of its vintage-style alnico humbucking pickup. The StingRay has reigned as an icon in the low-end realm for decades — don’t miss your chance to grab one with vintage panache and tone indicative of its first incarnation!

Built for impeccable style, performance, and retro vibe

Upon the arrival of the Ernie Ball Music Man Retro ’70s StingRay, Sweetwater bassists came to a consensus: this bass is a deluxe love song inspired by the groundbreaking instrument from the 1970s. This StingRay follows suit with a non-contoured slab ash body, comfortable “D”-shaped maple neck, and 7.5-inch radius maple fingerboard. Fret your grooves in style and slap/pop like there’s no tomorrow — this axe can handle anything you can throw at it. Aspects like the 3+1 tuner headstock, separate pickguard and control plate, and StingRay body shape remain the same, but you’ll also find retro features like a 3-bolt neck plate and Pre-EB Geometry Music Man chrome-plated steel bridge plate with vintage stainless steel saddles. You can even undertake further tonal experiments by utilizing the bridge mutes! Schaller bass tuners and luxurious chrome hardware complete the Retro ’70s StingRay.

Emulating the groundbreaking ’70s StingRays

Funk, rock, slap — each of these genres and more are indebted to the StingRay for stamping its mark upon them. You’ll find that same warm tonal power and massive output harnessed within the confines of the vintage-style alnico humbucker in the Retro ’70s StingRay. Ernie Ball Music Man crafted the pickup for this StingRay using long Alnico V magnets wound with original single poly-nylon wire. This configuration cultivates the classic tone heard on countless hits of the ’70s and beyond. Mirroring its groundbreaking 1976 predecessor, the Retro ’70s StingRay offers an active 2-band EQ for fine-tuning your tone to suit any genre.

Loaded with StingRay style, sound, and innovation

The StingRay Special, like the rest of Ernie Ball Music Man's StingRay bass lineup, claims roots that run back to the 1970s, when Ernie Ball Music Man was founded. Armed with a fat and punchy sound, active electronics, and a delightfully chunky neck, it's no wonder the StingRay became a standard for such bass players as Guy Pratt, Cliff Williams, and Flea. Finally, this StingRay is outfitted with a maple fingerboard for a smooth, fast feel and added sonic attack.

Ernie Ball Music Man Retro '70s StingRay Bass Guitar Features:

  • A modern-day StingRay that brings back all the tonal power and groundbreaking mojo of the original '70s StingRays
  • Period-correct non-contoured slab ash body
  • Comfortable maple neck with "D" shape
  • Maple fingerboard with 7.5-inch radius and 21 nickel silver frets
  • Classic retro features like 3-bolt neck plate, bridge mutes, and 2-band active EQ
  • Pre-EB Geometry Music Man chrome-plated steel bridge plate with vintage stainless steel saddles
  • 1 vintage-style Alnico 5 magnet humbucker pumps out powerful sound and soulful tone
  • Finished off with chrome hardware for a look that kills
