Acoustic-like Tones from a Fretless Electric

Ring in a new low-end era with this stellar Ibanez. Sweetwater suggests the SRD900 Bass Workshop fretless electric bass for anyone looking to make a foray into fretless instruments. This bass’s lightweight and delightfully resonant okoume body fares excellently when paired with its fretless fingerboard. Meanwhile, its maple top adds a slight treble sheen to the sound. The bass’s two Nordstrand Big Break pickups offer a sound ranging from massive power to cleaned-up single-coil. A hidden gem of the SRD900 is the AeroSilk under-saddle pickup system, which adds an acoustic quality to the overall sound. Ease of playability is unquestionable, thanks to a 5-piece maple/walnut neck and bound panga panga fingerboard that wrap it all together.

Unfettered electric bass performance

At Sweetwater, we’ve never met an Ibanez bass we didn’t like, and the same holds true for the SRD900 Bass Workshop! This fretless bass holds down a 30-fret range, giving you a full 2-and-a-half octaves to strut your low-end stuff. Its resonant okoume body is actually half semi-hollow, combining with the AeroSilk under-saddle piezo pickups to give you more of a natural, acoustic bass experience with all the modern convenience of a slimmed-down electric. The exotic maple top wood shines through its gorgeous finish, giving this bass a stunning natural appearance. A bolt-on 5-piece maple/walnut neck feels comfortable for quick jazzy runs, and the bound panga panga fingerboard is excellent for funky soloing. Lastly, luminescent side dot inlays assist your fingers to fret markers on dark stages.

Revel in versatile pickups

As a bassist, why settle for puny sound? Luckily, you’ll never have to when you pick up the Ibanez SRD900! Interred in its body are a pair of Nordstrand Big Break pickups, dialing up massive sound with plenty of power, character, and grit. Nordstrand achieved this impressive sound by cramming a split-coil into a soapbar-style pickup, so its no surprise when you find the characteristics of full-bodied sound and the clarity of a single-coil pickup beneath one roof. But the SR Bass Workshop Fretless doesn’t stop there. It also features an AeroSilk under-saddle piezo designed for natural acoustic bass tone that further enhances the sonic enjoyment of this bass guitar. Sweetwater bassists love the added benefit of noiseless operation for cleaner tone, plus a 2-band EQ — you will too.

Ibanez SRD900 Bass Workshop Features:

  • Half semi-hollow okoume body delivers on resonance and acoustic-like sound
  • Bound panga panga fingerboard offers smooth playability for quick runs up and down its length
  • 5-piece maple/walnut neck with SRD4 profile
  • Nordstrand Big Break pickups deliver massive sound and AeroSilk under-saddle piezo pickups give an acoustic quality
  • 2 volume controls for Nordstrand pickups and 1 volume control for AeroSilk
  • Bass, treble, and piezo tone controls
  • Luminescent side dot inlays make it easy to see fret markers on dark stages

Reviews

Great bass
I have had this bass for about a month. Can't praise it enough. Plays beautifully with Flat wound strings -
Piezo pickup has a warm, full sound. Norstrand pickups are very clear and modern sounding.
I've been playing this bass for several weeks now, mostly with a Big Band, but occasionally a small combo jazz group. The tone on the Piezo pickup is phenomenal. It blends well, and packs quite a punch. Blending in the Norstrand pickups adds a lot of treble clarity. Small adjustments with the active EQ go a long way.

My one complaint is the three volume knobs. I would have preferred a blend knob for the two soap bar pickups, but that's just a personal preference.

Overall, the bass is excellent. It feels and sounds great.

Nice sound and good playability. Someone forgot to put the frets on this bass! (just kidding) I am primarily a guitarist but this thing is fun. I bought it to add to my Music Man Stingray, Fender Precision, and Ibanez 5 string.
