Renowned Transparency and Impressive SPL Handling

When you need to capture drums as transparently as possible, with the utmost detail, you need mics like these matched Earthworks SR25 instrument microphones. Earthworks condenser microphones are designed from the ground up to be as accurate and articulate as possible, and that's exactly what you can expect from the SR25. They can handle up to 145db, so even the loudest drummer won't overload them. Its cardioid polar pattern gives you even frequency response across the frequency spectrum, and the 140-degree sweet spot gives you a transparent picture of your entire drum kit. And with 30dB of off-axis rejection, stage and monitor bleed won't be an issue.

Remains transparent on loud sound sources like drums

Exceptionally loud sound sources like guitar amplifiers and drums can push microphones to their max, and sometimes you want the mic distortion/coloration that results. But when you want to capture exactly what you're hearing in the room, with no coloration, the Earthworks SR25 condenser mic matched pair excels. With SPL handling up to 145dB without distortion, you can confidently place this mic over even the loudest drummer, knowing that your recording will be true to the source. And the 140-degree sweet spot means that you're getting a true picture of how the drum kit sounds from above, making it easy to fit the drums perfectly into the mix.

An extremely neutral-sounding cardioid polar pattern

One thing recording engineers at Sweetwater like about Earthworks mics is how neutral their sound remains even when off axis. If you've been recording for a while, you know that not all polar patterns are created equal — some mics have a significantly different frequency response in their off-axis zones than others. This means that if you do pick up some bleed from outside sound sources, they may sound unnatural and can be difficult to fit in the mix. With the Earthworks SR25, any off-axis sounds that are not completely rejected are captured with exceptional accuracy, which you will absolutely appreciate upon mixdown.

Love my balanced Earthworks SR25's for vibraphone

If the SR25's can capture my sound and please me, it's an extraordinary microphone. It's practically a plug and play EQ. I use two of them over my PIPERvibe in my home studio and they record my sound perfectly. I have a lot of subtleties in my playing that make up my style. If those subtle nuances are buried or not immediately available to the listener's ear, I can't use the recording. Since I received these mics, my frustrations in achieving a good recorded representation of my sound ended. Now, I can put out homemade recordings at studio quality with ease and at a fraction of the cost of other mics in this category.

Here's another side to the story.

Earthworks Audio: Two years ago, I purchased a used pair of Earthworks Audio SR 25 microphones from an online seller. I then left for my "day job" as rescuer down under in Antarctica for a couple years and didn't have the opportunity to try the mics out before I deployed. In October 2020, I came home for good to focus on music again. I pulled the two mics out and tried them. One of them had a random interference noise. I felt there was nothing I could do but pay to get them repaired or buy new ones. I contacted Earthworks to explain my problem and get them repaired. They told me to send the mics to them for evaluation. They found a problem that could not be repaired but Earthworks Audio replaced them with a new balanced pair at no cost to me. THAT is what a company with pride does. They treat their customers as valued clients. Thank you Earthworks Audio. You are a great company - thank you.

spacious and smooth

using these in a very dead low ceiling space they perform very well. in a spaced pair i get great separation, placement about 4 feet above kit and about the same for both from center of snare. In Glynn Johns, a very pleasant round smack carries the snare with little need for close mic. cymbals are smooth and crisp and trail evenly. liking this pair of mics as much if not more than KM 184s.

Earthworks SR25

These microphones are fantastic for drum overheads! They are very articulate, and handle high SPL's very well. Earthworks microphones, across the board, are fantastic on drums. I also have the DM 20's on my toms and snare, and they very accurately represent the sound of my drums. The thing I realized as I added more of the Earthworks mics, is that they work together exceptionally well to create a very coherent representation of the kit's overall sound. I'm finally happy with the sound I'm getting.

My sales engineer, Devin Cunningham, has been a great help. His recommendations about mic placement, mixing and his hands-on knowledge of the products have played a big part in me getting the sound I wanted. And Sweetwater (from product lineup, to sales support and delivery) is a great company!
