Nail the Iconic Marshall Sounds of the ’90s

Marshall’s JCM900 fueled the sound of countless rock and metal acts in the ’90s, ruling the airwaves with its bright and aggressive bite. The Marshall Studio 900 head packs that iconic sound down into the brand’s compact, modernized, and ardently accessible Studio lineup. This true tube amplifier head wields dual ECC83 preamp tubes, an ECC83 phase splitter, and two 5881 power tubes, offering all the high-octane tube/solid-state hybrid saturation of its 100-watt inspiration at a far more stage- and studio-friendly 20-watt power rating. Two channels are on tap with remote footswitch control, along with a 3-band global EQ, global Presence control, extensive gain-shaping knobs, and an onboard spring reverb to impart a touch of space to your sound. Moreover, while the Marshall Studio 900’s tone and aesthetics authentically pay tribute to the mighty JCM900, this amp matches its modernized Studio series siblings with 5- and 1-watt power scaling modes, a top-class effects loop, and a speaker-emulated DI output. Capture the sound of the ’90s and enjoy all the modern-minded benefits of the high-performance Studio series with Marshall's powerhouse Studio 900 head!

Tube warmth, solid-state clipping

While the original JCM900 was a true tube amp through and through, its valve-fueled circuit sported a secret weapon to turn up the high-gain heat: clipping diodes. This design essentially packed a dirtbox directly into your amplifier, allowing you to savor the sounds of both true tube saturation and stompbox-style aggression. Marshall’s Studio 900 matches its predecessor with a similar design, resulting in a hard-hitting hybrid tone that blends all the warmth and complexity of a valve-driven design with the bite and reliability of solid-state technology.

Loaded with all the player-friendly features you need

The Marshall Studio 900 sports a plethora of updates on the original JCM900, along with a smattering of modern features that the ’90s could only dream of! You’ll enjoy cranked-amp tones and screaming saturation at any volume level thanks to the Studio 900’s 5- and 1-watt power scaling modes — all but a prerequisite for Sweetwater’s apartment-dwelling guitarists and a boon for any musician with volume concerns. Next, the onboard effects loop makes it a breeze to integrate your favorite time-based and modulation effects. Prefer to record silently? A speaker-emulated DI output sends your sound straight to your audio interface or PA with ample authenticity.

Marshall Studio 900 Features:

  • 2-ch, 20W tube amplifier head inspired by the JCM900 — a high-octane hybrid amp that fueled countless rock and metal acts in the 1990s
  • 2 x 5881 power tubes, 2 ECC83 preamp tubes, and an ECC83 phase splitter pair with clipping diodes to merge all the warmth of tube saturation with the clarity and reliability of solid-state technology
  • Treble, Middle, Bass, and Presence knobs to dial in your sound to perfection
  • Speaker-emulated DI output for easy recording and straight-to-PA gigging
  • FX loop makes it a breeze to integrate your favorite time-based and modulation pedals
  • Spring reverb circuit rounds out your sound with depth, space, and character
  • 5W/1W power scaling for cranked tube tones at home- and recording-appropriate volume levels
  • Classic aesthetics that are sure to thrill fans of the original JCM900
  • Proudly made in Marshall’s UK factory in Bletchley, England

Reviews

The BEST of the Studio Amps
I bought the head, and it's beyond impressive for the $. It's very similar to my JCM20)0 DSL401, without the "Too loud" volume issues. It beats both my JCM2000 and my import 20w Import DSL.
It's almost as nice as my Mesa Five:35, which is twice the $ as the 900! I can't yet decide which I love more!
Who is this perfect for? Peeps like me too lazy to take pedals to a bar-scaled gig. Amp collectors, studio peeps, or anyone who loves a two channel mini rig that can crank it up, or close to the same tone with only 1 watt.
So far, IMO, the two higher watt settings sound very much alike. POSSIBLY the 1watt setting just SLIGHTLY might change the tone a little.(NOT sure yet, as I've only been on the 1w setting for a minute or two).
A MUST HAVE IMO for every Marshall addict!
Music background: Full gigging musician back in the day. Now as an old man in my late 50s, I barely gig but probably play more now than when I was endlessly gigging.
This amp is the bomb!
Way back in the day, I had the original JCM900 and 1960 cab. I really didn't bond and tried to really love it. I kept it for years, until one day I sold it to fund a DRZ Amp. Then I got another DRZ Amp, and never looked back. However, I was bit with nostalgia when I saw these amps demoed on Andertons TV. For some reason the new JCM900 in the demo sounded much nicer than I ever remember my full sized 100w head sounding. Wanting something different, I took a chance and my Sweetwater rep Andrew hooked me up.

The new JCM900 is the bomb! They fixed all the issues that the old 900 had, and revoiced the amp to be incredibly usable. Don't let 20 Watts scare you, It's Plenty LOUD!

CH1 goes from nice shimmering clean all the way to Paul Kossoff classic rock tone. But it's not harsh or spiky like the old 900s. They did the tone stack perfectly in this new amp for that channel. CH2 picks up where CH1 leaves off and can start gritty and go all the way to full blown killer metal.

It sounds great either through my Dr.Z Z-Best 2x12 cab, although I'm sure a Marshall cab voiced better. Where it really shined was running it into my Two Notes Captor X (Which I got at Sweetwater) and using a Pete Thorn pack he made for Two Notes. I used the PT G12M Black Cab into Pro Tools. Utterly amazing. Either way, cab or IR Load Box, this amp is incredible and a VAST improvement over the original 90s JCM900. Every bit of it is usable, CH1, CH2 and the spring reverb sounds fantastic.

The 5w and 1w switch works great, and no real loss of tone. Back in the day attenuators used to "suck" tone, but this doesn't.

This is a great amp, hands down and a very impressive upgrade over the old 90s original.
Music background: Guitarist, Producer
I was pleasantly surprised.
Drive Sound is outstanding on both channels provding flexibility i didn't expect.

Setup - 900 Studio head pushing 112 V30UK with MXR10 In loop & Plumes Earthquaker up front to provide clean boost when needed.
Gibson 50s standard.

Channel A drive is so overlooked by many.
Those evil diods contained within 900 is basically a buit in tubedriver easly covering 70s 80s Rock perfectly just like the 800.

Channel B takes drive to whole new level. "Euge Valoirta" Youtube review on this amp touchs on it best - Chug.
It is metal head must watch.

As for cleans , channel A has that covered. Crystal clear and warm.

It's a keeper very happy with purchase many thanks to Jacob.
Just fantastic
As a massive oasis fan - this amp with the Marshall SC212 has given me the sound I need without any pedals. You can hear Definitely Maybe in its Core. Using it with my new Les Paul Vintage Bourbon Burst is absolutely an epic combo. Thanks for the team at Sweetwater for making it so easy to sound so good.
Marshall Studio 900
Great little amp, perfect for classic rock, to hair band metal, with the right pedal no telling what is capable of. Also if you a re looking for something that wont wake the kids a still sounds good, this is the one.
Music background: Self taught hack!

There are countless "British"-style guitar amplifiers out there, but take it from the lifelong guitarists and tone connoisseurs at Sweetwater, when it comes to Marshall tone, there's nothing like the real thing. We've played them all, from vintage JTM45s and the ultra-cool Plexi reissue to modern handmade masterpieces such as the JVM410. There isn't a model among them we can't recommend with total confidence, and that includes their more affordable models too, like MG, DSL, and Code series amps. Thanks to our tight relationship with Marshall, Sweetwater's always on the cutting edge of their latest designs, custom models, and limited-edition gems. If you want iconic tone from across the pond, you want Marshall, and your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will help you find the perfect one.
