A Mic Kit at Home in Any Studio

Though Shure bills the SM4 as a “home recording microphone,” many professional Sweetwater studio engineers are tempted to bring it wherever their recording sessions lead them! For starters, the SM4’s 1-inch dual-diaphragm brass capsule provides both a full 20Hz–20kHz frequency response and a uniform true cardioid polar pattern with excellent off-axis rejection. There’s also Shure’s patent-pending Interference Shielding Technology, which deftly blocks the undesirable radio frequency noises from wireless devices that often plague home recording environments. Next, an internal pop filter plus a high max sound pressure level (SPL) handling means that the SM4 gives you quality audio that’s free of booms, pops, and plosives right from the start. Additionally, the all-metal, low-profile design instantly adds a professional aesthetic to any home studio, fitting perfectly alongside any world-class mics you may already own. Finally, this SM4 Kit contains a shockmount, detachable external pop filter, and carrying case.

Smooth, natural audio from any source

The heart of the SM4 is its 1-inch dual-diaphragm brass capsule, which delivers smooth and controlled low-end with crystal-clear highs that don’t sound harsh or shrill. The uniform true cardioid polar pattern also ensures that your captured sounds will be source-centric, and the SM4’s large “sweet spot” significantly attenuates the low-end boominess that can result from close-miking. The SM4 has also been designed to be as versatile as possible, able to record a variety of instruments and vocal styles thanks to its very high max SPL handling. Guitar amps, horns, metal vocalists, and even drums are all in play with the Shure SM4.

No radio noise

Just imagine, you’ll still be able to record with the Shure SM4 even if your teenager is texting on their phone or your little one is playing with an app on their tablet (or both)! That’s because Shure’s patent-pending Interference Shielding Technology prevents meddlesome RF noise from cell phones, laptops, wi-fi routers, and other common wireless devices. Featuring an integrated pop filter and woven mesh Faraday cage that shields the aforementioned mic capsule, this proprietary system virtually guarantees clean audio without any static, pops, or other unexpected “guests.”

Shure SM4 Kit Features:

  • Quality dual-diaphragm condenser microphone tailor-made for home studios
  • 1-in. dual-diaphragm brass capsule records controlled low-end and natural, smooth highs
  • Uniform true cardioid polar pattern gives you superior off-axis rejection of unwanted noise, and the large “sweet spot” significantly attenuates low-end boominess
  • Interference Shielding Technology features an integrated pop-filter and woven mesh Faraday cage, shielding the mic capsule and blocking unwanted RF noise from common wireless devices
  • Internal pop filter also enables clean recordings free of noise for easier future editing, mixing, and mastering
  • Flexibility to record a huge range of instruments and vocal styles thanks to a high max SPL handling and wide frequency response
  • Rugged, all-metal construction with a durable zinc housing keeps it safe from accidents or mischief
  • Sleek, low-profile design lends a professional look to even the humblest of home studios
  • Included shockmount provides added stability
  • Detachable, magnetic pop filter combines with the SM4’s internal pop filter for capturing truly clean audio
  • Carrying case makes for easy transport or storage

Shure SM4 Dual-diaphragm microphone
The Shure SM4 Dual-diaphragm microphone is a great studio mic. I actually have 2 of them in my home studio mounted on a K&M 23510 Adjustable Sterio Microphone Bar. I did this dual set up so the singer can move their head while singing and there is no fading because they are not aimed at a single microphone. I run these mics through a JBL EON One. The first channel supplies phantom power (which the Condenser mics require) but the second channel does not have phantom power. To care for this I have a Mackie M48 Phantom Power Supply (built like a tank) to power the second SM4 into channel 2 of the JBL EON One. This all works very well and all this material was purchased from Sweetwater. Because of the weight of the 2 SM4 microphones, I just ordered a short mic boom arm with a weight to counter balance (even though it doesn't seem to be a problem at the moment – I don't want a singer to get bopped with the mics). What I like about Sweetwater is that everything I have purchased has come in its original packaging, unopened. Previously (back in time), I had purchased from some other locations but I believe what I received was floor models or someone's returned product.
Love this Mic for Recording
Bought this to record with my Scarlett 2i2. Works great and sounds phenomenal. Like the magnetic pop filter - easy to set up.

It’s a good one…

As a preface, a little about my background. Was in bands and in/out of studios from the late eighties to early 00's. Got married and had a bunch of kids, so shifted to writing music and recording at home. I've used Some nice mics in the studio, and have had some of the staples (414, 4050, SM7, etc). I sold off my 4050, and built a custom mic for LDC duties. Great on acoustic guitar, not great on vocals. At least for me, the 414 was ok, u87 or 4050 was better.

Reached the point on my current project where I needed a mic for vocals, but I have three kids going to college (read: I'm a broke dude)

Along comes the SM4. Looks interesting from the YouTube vids, but it's so new that no good user reviews yet. Hasn't really come onto the gearslutz radar yet either.

It's good. I didn't trust it at first. It does stuff a regular LDC shouldn't. I set up my bass rig in front of my monitors with this mic, isolation was so good I didn't have to turn down my monitors. Self noise is low, it's sensitive (and has a hot output), but rejection keeps stray noise at bay. So far everything I've thrown at it comes across smooth and natural. Great full sound from the lows to the highs with no unnatural sizzle up top.

For home recording it's a must have imho. If you're recording in a great room with good acoustics, it's probably not going to be a good pick for OH's, etc. but for 6-18" micing distance it's a phenomenal pick for sources that call for an LDC. It's getting a lot of use. Pick one of these up before Shure comes to their senses and charges a realistic price for this thing. It should be in the

Unbelievably Clear
When purchasing this mic, I was skeptical of just how much better it could be. It picks up every nuance of my voice and wonderfully clear S's in most mics, you have to over enunciate a bit to get the sounds distinct and clear, not in this mic. It helps to relax the environment and prevents the singer from over working and allows them to do what they do and sing what they wrote, without overthinking every word... Excellent Mic, wortth every dollar.....
Shielded design
Ask me to eq the microphone close enough to my DAW and monitor speakers without feedback. Out of the box it's a bit metallic and on the high end, but that's the point of the e q of this versatile mic.
