SH-1: Reincarnation of a Classic

The Seymour Duncan '59 Model SH-1 humbucking pickup is Seymour Duncan's take on the classic Seth Lover PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker found on the Gibson's iconic late-1950s Les Paul. The SH-1 sports plain enamel wire, a long-legged bottom plate, 4-conductor cable, and the absence of a Seymour Duncan logo. This vintage re-creation serves up a slightly more scooped midrange than the Seth Lover model and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance. For flexible tones with vintage flair, the Duncan '59 Model SH-1 is a perfect fit.

Seymour Duncan '59 Model SH-1 at a Glance:

  • A complete tone monster setup
  • Trust your tone to Seymour Duncan
Vintage look and sound

The '59 Model SH-1 provides a late-'50s, vintage-correct, humbucker sound with warm and crystalline clean tones. Full and bright distorted tones with smooth sustain are available from this classic-style pickup. Classic appointments include plain enamel wire, long legged bottom plate, but this version includes 4-conductor cable, to give you modern flexibility in your wiring configuration.

A complete tone monster setup

Available in both neck and bridge models, a '59 neck is often used together with a hotter bridge pickup like the SH-4 JB or SH-13 Dimebucker for maximum tonal versatility. Best used with balanced and warm-sounding instruments, the '59 Model SH-1 works especially well with mahogany bodies and rosewood fingerboards.

Trust your tone to Seymour Duncan

Quite simply, it all boils down to tone. Seymour Duncan has spent the majority of his life refining the art of creating pickups. Seymour Duncan is dedicated to getting the best tone possible from his pickups, from modern metal monsters to faithful reproductions of gems from the '50s and '60s. We know tone is important to you - which is why we choose to carry Seymour Duncan pickups. With the massive amount of pickups available from Seymour Duncan, you're certain to find the sound you've been looking for.

Reviews

Great Pickup!
I don't know which one I like better, the '59 or the Jazz SH-2. Both are excellent. The '59 is full sounding without being muddy. It's bright enough especially if you use a 1meg volume pot and a 500k tone pot. But then again, I like bright neck pickups. I never seem to be disappointed with Seymour Duncan Pickups.
The Gold Standard for Neck Pickups
What more can I say about the original? It's clear, warm and has plenty of power to match with much hotter bridge pickups. It's a default choice for neck humbuckers and a very reliable choice. I've experimented with many neck pickups, but I keep coming back to this one. The 4-conductor version is the most versatile, and I have it set for coil-splitting. Don't overthink this one. Just get it.
Huge change ! - all for the good !
A 2-for-1 review. I helped a friend of mine with his Epiphone SG and replaced those pickups with these '59s. Fantastic change for that guitar. Did the same with my Gibson Midtown Custom and again a fantastic change. This isn't your grandma's new car this is a Ferrari upgrade. I've swapped many PUP's on other guitars but never with this result. My tone preference is Blues-Jazz-with some rock for good measure. The best swap I've ever done. These sound great.

Great tone
Worked in my 5150 Standard. Sounds great playing jazz, country, and blues!!!

Mix with TB JB in the bridge. So many tonal variations. Like 5 guitars in one especially with the push pull pot in the tone knob.
Music background: Playing for 30+ years. Mostly played for church last 14 years.
Duncan SH-1n '59 pickup
A go to Neck pickup that works well with many different Bridge models. A true PAFtone.
