Iconic Tone Meets Eye-catching Looks

Epiphone’s SG Modern Figured is the perfect 6-string companion for players who covet a guitar that stands out from the crowd. This solidbody electric guitar puts a fresh spin on the familiar SG body shape, with a mahogany body, a thick maple top, and an eye-catching top veneer. A set-in mahogany neck and SlimTaper profile encourage you to explore the upper limits of your playing prowess. Plug into your favorite amplifier or modeler, and the SG Modern Figured’s ProBucker humbucking pickups deliver high-output tones with undeniable vintage flavor. You also get a treble bleed circuit and coil-splitting capabilities, which help you tap into more tones than ever before. Choose the Epiphone SG Modern Figured and rock the stage and studio with a combination of classic panache and contemporary style.

A different take on the SG body

This version of the SG puts a new twist on the classic SG body style. The Epiphone SG Modern Figured comes with a resonant mahogany body for a solid sonic foundation. Then, they add a 0.75-inch maple top to the mix, which adds an extra dose of bright trebles and a snappy attack. Finally, the guitar has a AAA flame maple top veneer for attention-demanding good looks. While some might label the construction as slightly unorthodox, there's no mistake: this guitar sounds absolutely incredible from the second you plug it in.

Experience the PAF magic with ProBucker pickups

Your new SG Modern Figured comes equipped with a pair of an Epiphone ProBucker 2 in the neck position and a ProBucker 3 in the bridge position. Descended from the renowned PAF humbuckers of yesteryear, ProBuckers deliver an old-school tone with the bite and clarity demanded by contemporary music. That’s not all, though. This guitar comes complete with a treble bleed circuit to preserve your trebles when rolling the volume back. Finally, you get coil-splitting capabilities to expand the range of available tones even further.

Comfortable neck carve

The SG Modern Figured’s set-in neck is constructed from resonant mahogany. The artisans at Epiphone carve this neck into the brand’s signature Asymmetrical SlimTaper neck profile. The Slim Taper neck profile is beloved among guitar players at Sweetwater for its speed and playability. It leaves just enough wood in your hand to feel sleek without slowing you down. Whether you’re ripping riffs in the lower frets or exploring new territory on the upper frets, the SlimTaper neck profile is ready for action.

  • Mahogany body supplies a resonant sonic foundation
  • Maple top contributes a dash of tonal brightness

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

This is a lot of guitar, period. But especially for the price…
Growing up, becoming a fan of music, I noticed certain things. First, it seemed to me as if the SG was standard issue to anyone playing hard rock/metal. I couldn't rattle off a list of names anymore, but a few: Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Pete Townsend. Even Jimmy Page's double-neck was shaped like a SG. It seemed even more ubiquitous than the Strat. So I was never overly enamored of the SG, just for them being so common. But guitars became an obsession to me for a while and I eventually had to have a SG.

Epiphones are more in my price range than Gibson, and I've had a black Epiphone Les Paul for years (2002, iirc) that's an excellent guitar, so I was confident an Epiphone would meet my needs. The Pro Bucker pickups - WOW!! Lots of power, they compare favorably to my les Paul's pickups, which, iirc, are also pro buckers. Added functions are activated using push-pull pots; coil splitting and out-of-phase options are available. Splitting a humbucker's coils isn't always recommended, some humbuckers lose something when split, and their "single Coil" option sounds nothing like single coil, but that's not the case here. You can definitely hear the difference clearly.

The ebony fretboard is beautiful and feels great to play, and it was a definite selling point to me, as this is my only guitar (of 20+) with an ebony fretboard. I like the "Mojave Burst" finish on the maple top, and I also thought the purple option was pretty cool-looking too.

Everything was well set up out of the box, sweetwater has been good about that in my experience. No complaints.

As my heading said, this is a lot of guitar. Of my 20+ guitars, I might have one or two guitars I favor a bit more than this SG, sentimentally, but if I was made to choose only one guitar of my entire collection i could keep, and had to give the rest away, for pure functionality + quality, I couldn't possibly justify another choice over this SG. It's a killer.
excellent guitar

the only reason it didnt get the full 5 stars is the neck dive, but i guess thats just an sg thing. other than that it looks/sounds/plays great. plenty of bite thru those humbuckers . the weight is pretty good. the neck profile is really comfortable, fairly skinny neck.

personally im not a fan of all that chrome on the humbuckers so i took the covers off. looks pretty imo.

Awesome Guitar
Only reason I am deducting 1/2 star is because the nut was not cut correctly and height is a little high. Don't know how it made it past the 55 point inspection. The rest of the guitar is beautiful and plays great from cleans to high gain. Overall I am happy with it. I will just have to deal with the nut height for now.
A Very Maple ( and Bright) SG
Very beautiful guitar. It's also heavy for an SG, probably because of the 3/4" maple cap. That same maple cap also causes this SG to sound very bright even strummed acoustically. If you like the darker tonality of an all mahogany SG, the Modern Figured will probably sound different, not necessarily better or worse. That's a matter of taste. I was surprised at how bright this guitar sounds. Given it's construction, the difference makes sense. Perhaps mine is exceptionally bright but I believe it's the maple. I'd expect Modern Figured SGs to sound brighter on average than, say, all-mahogany SG Standards. The treble bleed circuit keeps that brightness when plugged into an amp and DAW. While the coil splits are usable, I really like the out of phase switch. While the guitar sounds bright, it's also means that the bass tones ring with clarity; no muddiness. The phase switch tends to cancel bass tones without causing treble to sound shrill. The locking strap buttons are pointy. IMO, should be rounded instead. Neck feels thicker on the thumb side than I anticipated, more like a Les Paul neck shaved down on the palm side. A sort of assymetrical D shape. Plenty of bite in the bridge p/u, nice warmth in the neck p/u, although I haven't adjusted p/u height for either yet. The tonal controls and switch options give complete tonal control to the player. I'm not fond of the clear vol/tone knobs because it's hard for me to see what setting I'm on but that's easily fixable. Many people wouldn't care. Could it have better p/u? Sure. Better ones do exist. However, these are well suited to this guitar. Also, given that the guitar body is about an inch and a half thick, it's really a body made of 2 flat pieces of 3/4" wood, 1 maple and 1 mahogany, glued together with the maple on top. So the bridge is anchored mostly in maple, causing the guitar to sound very bright (trebly). I like it and to me, it's a more sonically useful guitar as there's no muddiness. This guitar has a bell-like quality in its tone when played acoustically, a bit Strat-like yet still thick like a Les Paul. I may change out the tone caps as I like smaller cap values but the stock ones are fine. Overall, this a beautiful, well-appointed, well-made guitar that's worth more than you'll pay for it. Epiphone created exactly what's advertised: a modern SG that is a player's guitar. Most of the upgrades are done; locking tuners, nut, p/u (although still can upgrade), locking strap pegs, switching options, etc. So there's not much I feel I want to modify or upgrade, other than adding a roller bridge. And usually I always heavily mod my guitars. Not with this one. This Modern Figured SG is a great guitar, well balanced. If you have neck dive, just move the bottom strap peg up along the body edge a couple of inches. I love all the modern features, it plays great, looks beautiful and offers more ways to sculpt your tone than you may ever use. It's unique given the maple/mahogany body and most of all...it's an SG with a flame top!

Awesome SG
Very pleased with this SG. Excellent playability and tone right out of the box. Neck is very comfortable and works.

The Epiphone Probuckers are surprisingly very good. I was fully expecting to switch out the pickups but for now I am very pleased with the tones.

The phase switching and coil splitters do not really give any useable tones for me.. but its a wonderful guitar even without these extras.

A fun guitar
