SG Standard ’61Lefty

Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and smashed onstage by Townshend, the Gibson SG is a rock icon. Gibson’s Nashville-made 2019 SG Standard ’61 takes you back to the first model year of the legendary solidbody electric guitar — small pickguard, vintage cherry finish, and all. The SG Standard ’61 is spec’d with a pair of toneful humbuckers; a fast, comfortable SlimTaper neck; and a bound, Plek’d rosewood fretboard with action that’s almost nonexistent. The SG’s lightweight mahogany body delivers great sustain and no pain, even if you play all night. And the worn nitro finish looks and feels great while enhancing the tone of this legendary rock machine. Own your piece of rock history: the Gibson SG Standard ’61.

Burstbucker pickups deliver timeless humbucker tone

When it comes to capturing that classic Gibson tone, nothing beats the sound of 60s Burstbucker pickups. You’ll love the tight low end, complex midrange, and sweet highs you’ll get out of these pickups — it’s everything you expect when you pick up a Gibson! That’s because 60s Burstbucker pickups were designed to re-create the sound of original 1960s-era humbuckers to perfection. So if you want the iconic tone of a classic Gibson SG, the SG Standard ’61 is the guitar for you.

SlimTaper neck carve and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the 2019 SG Standard ’61. You’ll be delighted by how well this guitar’s fast, early-’60s SlimTaper neck profile comfortably fits your hand. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound so no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

The SG Standard ’61 2019 wears a gorgeous gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look vintage-y wonderful, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. This guitar has the look (and feel) of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Reviews

Gibson sg 61 reissue
Was exactly as shown on the Sweetwater website. No complaints at all. If you want to purchase a "High End" guitar, Sweetwater is the one shop stop.

Great Gibson quality as usual
I've had my SG now about a week. I LOVE this thing! I would put it on the same level as my Les Paul any day. The sustain and clarity is amazing. So is the fit and finish as usual. Due in part to the extra care in the packaging from Sweetwater no doubt. Shipping was fast and as usual, Chris Freidman was super helpful and even managed to hook me up with a couple extra thing as well. Thanks for that. It's a nice touch.
The way these guitars are constructed is a bit different than most. For some reason the neck feels like it's really long at first. And being a 61, it has a different neck profile than the Les Paul's as well. It's thinner, which I like. But it almost feels a bit wider as well. If your used to the neck on the Les Paul's, you might want to get a modern SG?
Out of the box, mine had a slight fret buzz on the low E. I swapped out the factory strings already due to the fact I can't stand the Gibson strings they come with! And I went from 10s down to 9s which I prefer. When I did this, I raised up the one side of the bridge about 3/4 of a turn and that solved the buzzing altogether.
Overall, great guitar and great service from Chris as always!

Named her Leslie
This guitar brings back memories of myself and sister Leslie. See this is the same style guitar our parents got us. And to be in a position to afford the real thing. Oh it plays beautifully and looks beautiful.
Music background: Jazz, blues, gospel and funk.
Bill Thomka from Milwaukee. WI
Just unboxed this bad boy. Finish is flawless. Almost tuned right out of the box. My dream guitar and being left handed Sweetwater has plenty of options. Kudos to my sales engineer Jacob who has been top notch since I first purchase my first guitar/amp 3 years ago. He always responds with punctuality and professionalism. I will always purchase from Sweetwater.

Man o man, Like Wow!
This guitar growls barks and screams all those classic rock tones with a playability thats just right for intricate lead and dynamic percussive rhythm playing.

I've been a strat & Les paul guy for decades and this guitar bridges the space between them beautifully.
Everything about this guitar is excellent.
It took me a while to learn how to play it right since it has a different symmetry in regard to playing it but once I got used to that the skys the limit in terms of what you csn do with this guitar.

I love it.
Music background: 40 years rockin.
