20+ Years of Research, One Amazing Signature Guitar

The original PRS DGT (David Grissom Trem) is one of the company's most acclaimed signature instruments, and it’s now available as a value-packed SE model for the first time! The DGT is essentially a hot-rodded PRS McCarty packed with personalized modifications and custom-voiced pickups. A dedicated PRS artist, David Grissom worked with the company for more than 20 years to refine his instrument to perfection. Beyond vintage-voiced humbuckers, the PRS SE DGT also boasts streamlined pickup controls, taller frets, and David’s signature neck carve. With spectacular features like these, it’s everything you’d expect from a high-quality PRS that’s ready for years of use. From the mahogany body and neck to a stunning maple top and Patented PRS Tremolo, David and PRS have built an incredible instrument at an enticing SE price point. David himself put it best: “The DGT is a product a lot of miles down the road: a lot of gigs, a lot of records. It’s like picking up a vintage guitar.” Here at Sweetwater, we couldn’t agree more.

Dependable tonewoods

David Grissom favors classic tonewoods with a familiar sound, which makes perfect sense given his work with artists like Storyville and John Mellencamp! The PRS SE DGT stays true to his rock roots with a comfortable resonant mahogany body. Mahogany delivers rich, warm tone with strong critical midrange; complementing that is a gorgeous maple body cap for a classic look that adds a touch of brightness and snap.

Comfortable DGT neck carve

Whether you're playing rhythm or leads, this guitar’s neck carve, the DGT, is your ticket to rock. The DGT carve sits close to PRS’ acclaimed Pattern Regular neck carve, but features modestly enhanced shoulders for a touch more substance than your standard “C” neck. The DGT carve especially improves playability on the lower strings; it's ideal for versatile players, especially those who favor bluesy stylings that demand excellent playability at either end of the neck.

Texas-tinged “S” DGT humbuckers

Taking inspiration from the Lone Star State stomping grounds of David’s career, two onboard “S” DGT humbuckers deliver vintage-inspired, smokey Texas-tinged tone. For the original DGT, David and Paul Reed Smith personally spent a year testing and refining 40-plus pairs of pickups before narrowing the options down to these two masterpieces. “S” pickups like these DGT humbuckers let you benefit from all the R&D that went into the original version, but at a fraction of the cost.

Custom controls

The SE DGT’s pickup controls are extremely customized and gig-ready. You get a volume knob for each pickup, which makes switching and blending onstage a breeze; meanwhile, a push-pull master tone knob gives instant access to high-quality single-coil tones. The pickup selector is also scooted back behind the bridge, so you’ll never hit it with your strumming hand during a set. It all adds up to more proof that David’s “signature” on the PRS SE DGT is much more than just a rubber stamp.

PRS SE DGT Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Solidbody electric guitar built to the specs of David Grissom
  • Modified McCarty-style body made from mahogany delivers rich tone with lasting sustain and comfortable body contours
  • Beautiful maple top complements the mahogany’s depth with a touch of brightness and snap
  • Mahogany neck with unique DGT carve — “C” speed and comfort with modest shoulder enhancement for improved grip
  • Smooth 22-fret rosewood fingerboard
  • 2 Texas-voiced DGT “S” humbuckers for vintage-tinged tone
  • 2 volume controls, master tone knob with push-pull coil split, and 3-way pickup selector toggle
  • Performance-minded hardware including PRS Patented Tremolo and PRS-designed tuners

Hands down the best SE I’ve played!

I've had/have multiple PRS SE's and I've never had any issues with playability, fit and finish. Out of the 6+ SEs I've owned, this DGT is exceptional! The playability is excellent, the fit and finish, including the fretwork, the overall build quality, sublime tones I can get from it are no less than astounding! Not to mention the set-up and intonation was spot on right out of the box! I added some PRS lampshade knobs and a set of SE locking tuners mainly for esthetics. That being said this guitar needs nothing. PRS and Dave Grissom knocked this one out of the park! Extremely versatile, light weight and the acoustic resonance of this guitar is off the charts. I would highly recommend it to both beginners and experienced musicians alike. Absolutely loving it!

Killer instrument!

No regrets or remorse on this purchase! Guitar feels and sounds great. Love the neck, was lil worried about hearing it had a chunky neck. Pick-ups produce many sounds depending on pick attack. This guitar will be hard to beat for the money. I spent the extra on having it plek'd and set up with ernie ball colbalt 10's. Nice low action with zero buzz. Have way to many guitars for a hobby player (guess never to many) and this went to my 1st grab everytime i play. Thanks to Zach Shepherd for follow-ups. Sweetwater is lucky to have him.
Music background: 35yr hobbiest.

Uncompromising Value

I've had this instrument for a few weeks now. I wanted to wait for a bit before I reviewed, so I could be as thorough in my opinion as possible. The DGT SE is simply one of the best guitars I have played at any price point. PRS's attention to detail is second to none. I have owned my share of high end guitars and the DGT SE has quickly become my favorite go to. Fretwork, sound, and finish, it's all there. If you're looking for a great, well made guitar with a ton of great tones be sure to consider this one. Very well done PRS and David Grissom.

Super Shocker

As always, once the package arrived I gave the required 24 hours to acclimate to the climate in my house. Upon opening the box I was really shocked with the feel and quality of the guitar. I bonded with this guitar immediately. Over the years I've become a sort of guitar snob. I generally write off guitars that fall under the $mark. I don't expect them to have decent pickups or a comfortable neck, but I was wrong.

The finish, look, feel, and sound are spot on. It's got me wondering now. If the DGT SE is this good then what does the core model feel and sound like. The coil spilt sounds great on this guitar. Both pickups are good but you will definitely feel more at home with the bridge pickup and spend the majority of the time in that position.

If I can break the prejudice of cheaper is not worthy I think I might be able to exclusively go for SE's going forward. Or at least S2's. PRS just never fails to deliver quality and attention to detail. This is a guitar that is worth your time and attention. For me this is a keeper and I sell a lot of guitars.

Best Guitar I Have Ever Played

Simple - Having owned many guitars and still owning a few, this is - bar none - the best guitar I have played. Everything about it is perfect. It came out the of the box set up nicely, just needed some fine tuning but intonation was spot-on. Setup was perfect as well - The frets were better than what I have on any other guitar. For an out-of-the box guitar, this one is the best bargain on the market.
I play blues/classic rock - nails both of those. The coil-tap is not like a regular one that you would expect - it makes this thing sound like a tele instead of a thin single coil. The pickups do not need any changes - they are amazing.
The neck - feels between an old Les Paul and 70s strat to me - beefy but very easy to play. Most comfortable and easy to play neck I have ever held - and that is over 30 years of playing.
Some aren't too keen on the volume knobs but for me - it actually made sense. The switch from this to a Les Paul, no issues.
The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the switch - up is bridge, down is neck - I opened up the back and rotated the switch - it is now perfect.
Is it 'good enough' to gig with? Well, David Grissom thinks so and uses one quite often when playing live.
No regrets at all with this guitar. I also have no worry in recommending this guitar to anyone wanting a great player of a guitar at a reasonable price.
Music background: Gigging when I can
