A Great-sounding Yamaha Birch Kit

This Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5-piece shell pack is an outstanding value, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player. Complete with a pair of rack toms, a floor tom, snare drum, and bass drum, this Custom Birch kit will imbue your drumming with the same low fundamental and warm tone that has become a trademark of Yamaha's birch drum designs over the past three decades. Drummers at Sweetwater dig Yamaha's low-mass lugs because of the way that they allow the shells to vibrate, resulting in remarkable tone and sustain. Finished in a beautiful high-gloss lacquer, this Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5-piece shell pack embodies value, quality, and craftsmanship.

100% birch shells

Whenever a beginner/intermediate-stage shell pack boasts all-birch shells, it immediately has our attention! Constructed with six plies of 100% birch, these tom and snare shells embody that iconic Yamaha birch tone that’s highlighted by a punchy warmth and low, hearty, impactful presence. The same can be said for the 7-ply, 7mm bass drum. Each of the shells in this pack endures Yamaha’s Air Seal System of formation, ensuring it will stand up to the rigors of constant practice and gigging transport with tremendous integrity. Trimmed with 45-degree bearing edges, these shells optimize the vibration of each drumhead to aid in proper tonal definition and resonance for an all-around knockout sound.

Shells only. Cymbals, stands, and additional hardware not included.

Hardworking hardware

Shells aren’t the only factor that the Stage Custom Birch refuses to skimp on — it’s also adorned with some fabulously functional hardware. The 1.6mm steel triple-flanged hoops and low-mass Absolute-style lugs provide not only a more round and resonant tone but also extra weight relief for lightweight transport while gigging. Die-cast bass drum claw hooks mean sturdy, rattle-free kicks with authority and peace-of-mind playability free from undependable components. And with the YESS tom mounting system holding your rack shells in place via a singular mounting point, you’ll enjoy impressive resonance and convenient adjustability everywhere you play.

Come one, come all!

You don’t have to spend a fortune to rock out with a tone and style that’ll keep up with the best of them. For beginners just starting, building off a kit like the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch instills the quality sonic and construction characteristics of the craft at an early stage of the drumming journey, establishing an appreciation for the beauty of the instrument and the process. That appreciation is invaluable at any stage, meaning intermediate players will get as much out of the Stage Custom Birch as novices. Plus, with such fine build quality, taking to small stages and rocking out at local gigs are this kit’s bread and butter.

Shells only. Cymbals, stands, and additional hardware not included.

Yamaha SBP2F50 Stage Custom Birch 5-piece Shell Pack Features:

  • YESS tom mounting system provides stability and maintains resonance

Reviews

One year later - glad I went with Stage Customs
I'm the type to get obsessive and spend quite a while researching bigger purchases before buying. This was especially true when I started shopping for a drum set.

I pulled the trigger on these because of the overwhelmingly positive things that friends and the online "drummer community" had to say about Yamaha drums, and Stage Customs in particular. If you're a research dork like me, search "yamaha stage custom birch reddit".

The most consistent impressions I gathered on Stage Customs were:
1. That Stage Customs were the best shells on the market at this price range
2. That their hardware, quality control, and durability punch way above their price
3. That I could get years of all kinds of playing out of them; that I won't be needing to upgrade if I
want to take these out of the practice space and play them live, or record.

I've spent countless hours playing these over the last year, and I'm really happy with them. They look fantastic, and they sound fantastic.
I replaced the included heads with Evans EMAD2s on the kick, EC2s on the toms, and an HD Dry on the snare, and I'm really happy with the sound.

The only thing I may replace at some point would be the snare drum. There have been 2 or 3 times where it detuned a bit, or I noticed a tension rod sitting on the ground that vibrated itself loose. It sounds like I'm not the only one whose had that issue with this snare. I resolved it with tension rod locks, but still may upgrade the snare at some point.

I've got a close friend who is a much more experienced drummer than myself, with many live performances and recording sessions under his belt. He spent some time playing my Stage Customs, and I was tickled by how impressed he was with them.
I fondly recall him saying "This kick is PERFECT" and "Man, these are recordable".
Its high praise coming from an older prog drummer rockin' premium shells that run 3x-4x what these bad boys go for.
Final Stop...Yamaha Stage Custom Birch!
In just the past 10 years, I have purchased 10 different drum kits of various brands (6 acoustic, 4 electronic). I have recently gotten rid of every single kit and returned, for the 3rd and final time, to the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch.

This kit punches so far above its price point that it's just silly! The shells are incredibly well made and flawlessly round, bearing edges are perfect, all the hardware is exceptional, the tuning stability is hard to believe, and above all...the TONE, balanced attack, sustain, and projection of this kit is just sublime! And this KICK!

BONUS 1: There's not a single genre this kit can't cover.
BONUS 2: It performs equally well at low, medium, and high tunings. A rather rare trait for many kits!
Good value.
This kit is well built and sounds very good. I replaced the stock heads with a more premium head. Clear emperors on the toms, a single ply emad on the bass drum, and a coated ambassador on the snare. These drums are easy to tune. Very useable in multiple musical situations. I am not a fan of the floor tom spurs. But they are adjustable. The tom mounting system is quite functional. Great for a good general kit. I might consider adding a metal snare for certain situations but the included snare will get the job done. Yamaha provides excellent value for the price.

Excellent studio kit
I bought these shells for use as a workhorse studio kit, for artists who come to record and for my own playing. The value of this shell pack is insane considering how versatile and well-built these drums are. Thus far, I have not felt limited in dialing in any type of drum tone with a wide range of tuning and heads. However I find they excel at very natural sounding metal and rock playing, with a tight attack, quick decay, and satisfying harmonics at any tuning. I would feel equally comfortable using this kit on stage as I do in the studio, as the thin shells project in a very balanced way; never too gentle but never overbearing.
Music background: Engineer, producer
Very Impressed
I bought this kit to take to gigs, not wanting to take a larger, more expensive kit to put of the house any longer. I replaced heads with clear Emperors on batter side of all toms. The kick was replaced with an Emad 2 clear. I left all stock resonant heads on. I was really blown away by the sound of this kit, so much that I have used at the studio. Good amount of punch. Nice sustain and very well controlled when tuned right. Quality feel. This does not feel like a cheaper kit. Full transparency: I haven't used the snare yet. I'll probably add a 14" floor tom for a bit of versatility. Great sounding drums. Thanks Sweetwater and Yamaha.
