Stave vs. ply: what's the difference?
The vast majority of drums are made using layered plies. Stave drums, on the other hand, are made by using narrow pieces of wood (staves) that feature a beveled edge and are then glued together to form a cylindrical shape similar to how a barrel is made. This reduces the overall amount of glue necessary to create the shell. What do they sound like? Sweetwater drummers describe stave drums as being warmer and more resonant than their ply-based cousins.
