The Tricone Resonator: History in Your Hands

The Tricone Roundneck Resonator from Recording King is a throwback metal resonator guitar with formidable design features that take resonator guitars to their limit. Metal resonators pre-date all forms of guitar amplification, and the tricone design reigns most powerful among them with three resonator cones packed into a single guitar. The Tricone Roundneck rings with a vintage voice that’s packed with downright impressive clarity and volume. Premium bell brass construction ensures high-velocity tone and sustain while comfortable features and premium hardware ensure the Tricone Roundneck works with you at every step of the way. Sweetwater players love this guitar’s distinct raspy lo-fi voice; it’s a time capsule of tone that’s expressive for fingerpicking, slide guitar, and recording, and much more.

Built for comfort

This guitar is built for comfort with a number of upscale features that won't break the bank. A shapely round-shouldered body ensures vintage articulation and playability that’s made for travel, gigs, or simply keeping it within reach and on display in your living space. Meanwhile, a comfortable mahogany neck and padauk fingerboard ensure great playability whether you’re plucking intricate dusty melodies or wailing on your Great Depression-era tune with a slide. This instrument also features a smooth “C” neck carve, which makes fretting feel natural and easy up and down the neck.

Triple the cones, triple the power

Recording King went to great lengths to ensure this resonator has stellar volume and projection; its body is made from only the finest bell brass with a design that’s faithful to the original tricone resonators of the 20th century. This body yields distinct metallic tone that’s not only classic and rich, but also a little rough around the edges, just like it should be. Sound is further amplified by three handspun cones joined by a brass pan soundwell with stylish grille brass vents. This tricone system outperforms single cone resonators when it comes to volume, projection, and sustain. In summary, the brass body tames and warms the Tricone’s power (without muting it) for a big sound that's brimming with overtones. And at either end of this guitar, you’ll find premium hardware that leaves nothing to chance: there’s a bone nut, a hardwood ebony saddle, a sandcast bridge, and sturdy nickel tuners with an 18:1 ratio for reliable and smooth workhorse performance 24/7.

Recording King: retro refreshed

The landmark Recording King brand traces its origins back to 1930s building contracts with the retail titan Montgomery Ward. During the early days of radio and recorded music, affordable but well-crafted Recording King guitars, banjos, and resonators swept across the nation far and wide. Now revived, Recording King hearkens back to those early days of production-line American instruments built for pros and budding musicians alike. Nearly a century later, these retro models take their cues from vintage designs for results that look and sound like their 1930s counterparts.

Recording King Resonator King Tricone Roundneck Resonator Guitar Features:

  • Roundneck tricone resonator, plays like a traditional 6-string guitar (squareneck model also available)
  • Nickel-plated bell brass top, back, and sides deliver incredible projection with classic resonator tone
  • Slim round-shouldered body makes for a highly portable and comfortable instrument
  • 3 handspun resonator cones deliver band-level volume with bell-like clarity

Round neck Bell Bronze Tricone!
Great volume, fine tone, stellar set-up by Paul Lea and his team! I paid for a custom setup, and do feel that that choice made all the difference! Absolutely no negative fiddily bits:) Fit and finish were excellent!
Music background: Old Time String Musician
Excellent Guitar with Loads of Personality
I'm relatively new to resonator guitars, but took a chance on this model. I have to say that it really exceeded my expectations. What a great guitar.

It ships with rather heavy strings and combined with a wide neck and a high bridge it takes some real effort to play things like bar chords. That said, it excels at slide and alternate tunings. I ended up swapping in some LaBella light gypsy jazz strings and really dig the tone and playability of it now. It plays effortlessly with those string and still has plenty of bite and attack. I also added a Krivo resonator electric pickup which makes this thing even more versatile for live performances and recording. All said, this one is definitely a keeper.
lost and replaced.
My first tri_one,very old, from the 1940.I lost it in a fire last Jan.,was heart broken so got a new one,it has the same if not better sound and quality than the old one, love it. Ron.
Music background: Professional,4 world tours.
Great value!
I think this is one of the best bargains in the guitar market. I've been playing mine for about a year and a half in all kinds of situations: unamplified, miced, recording, live. It may not have the vibe of an old National, but it comes close enough for what I'm doing and at a fraction of the price. Sounds great recorded. Cuts through unamplified in acoustic gigs. Also gets close to a Django-ish sound if you play it that way. If you're into resos, grab one of these for a treat!
