Step Back in Time with This Travel-size Brass Resonator

The Parlor Resonator from Recording King is a compact metal resonator guitar with strong vintage stylings and a formidable voice to match. Metal resonators pre-date all forms of guitar amplification, with the most successful resonators subbing traditional wooden bodies for bell brass paired with a resonator cone. The Parlor Resonator captures this vintage legacy and voice, but in a slim package that’s incredibly portable. Despite this guitar’s small size, a full-size 9.5-inch resonator cone ensures consistent tone that’s always powerful and full. Sweetwater players love this blend of parlor dimensions and resonator features. Together, they yield classic raspy resonator tone but with a bump in shimmering treble and top-end clarity from the parlor shape and size.

Built for comfort

This guitar is built for comfort with a number of upscale features that won't break the bank. A shapely parlor body ensures vintage articulation and playability that’s made for travel, gigs, or simply keeping it within reach and on display in your living space. Meanwhile, a short-scale rosewood fingerboard and vintage “V” profile mahogany neck ensure great playability whether you’re plucking intricate dusty melodies or wailing on your Great Depression-era tune with a slide.

Superior biscuit cone tone

Despite its slim size, Recording King went to great lengths to ensure this resonator has stellar volume and projection. The Parlor Resonator body is made from only the finest bell brass. This body yields distinct metallic tone that’s not only classic and rich, but also a little rough around the edges, just like it should be. Sound is further amplified by a full-size handspun 9.5-inch European biscuit cone that lets this little guitar pump out big sound. The Parlor Resonator has the classic cutting midrange of a full-size resonator, but with additional top-end clarity due to its parlor shape and size. And at either end of this guitar, you’ll find premium hardware that leaves nothing to chance: there’s a bone nut, a hardwood ebony saddle, a maple bridge, and sturdy nickel tuners with an 18:1 ratio for reliable and smooth workhorse performance 24/7.

Recording King: retro refreshed

The landmark Recording King brand traces its origins back to 1930s building contracts with the retail titan Montgomery Ward. During the early days of radio and recorded music, affordable but well-crafted Recording King guitars, banjos, and resonators swept across the nation far and wide. Now revived, Recording King hearkens back to those early days of production-line American instruments built for pros and budding musicians alike. Nearly a century later, these retro models take their cues from vintage designs for results that look and sound like their 1930s counterparts.

Recording King Nickel Parlor Resonator Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Parlor-size resonator guitar offers big sound in a compact, travel-friendly package
  • Small body retains powerful, distinct resonator midrange but also yields more shimmering top-end clarity
  • Nickel-plated bell brass top, back, and sides deliver incredible projection through a full-size handspun 9.5-inch resonator cone
  • Comfortable satin-finished mahogany neck with a vintage “V” neck carve for easy fretting
  • Short-scale 24.25-inch fingerboard carved from rosewood
  • Sturdy nickel tuners with black button covers and 18:1 tuning ratio for fast and precise tuning
  • Premium hardware increases resonance (a bone nut, ebony saddle, and maple bridge)
  • Dual F-holes balance tone across lows, mids, and highs

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

Rated 5/5
Small and Mighty
I've owned an RK Tricone resonator for a couple of years and loved the sound, but wanted to downsize. So I thought I'd give the parlor-sized RM-993 a try. I play in a band that plays completely acoustically, no amps, so I was a bit worried that I'd be giving up some volume and projection with the smaller body.
I shouldn't have worried. This little thing easily matches the Tricone for volume and it has a sweetness of tone on single-string playing that I love. It chunks swing-style rhythm parts with authority and has a clear even sound for chord solo work.
Build quality is good and the Sweetwater setup was very well done. The neck has a nice soft V profile that rounds out as you move from 1st to 12th frets; I find it very comfortable.
Sure, it's not a vintage National, but I'm a working stiff. It gets me pretty close for way less dough and I don't have anxiety bringing it to gigs. It fits me really well and it's fun to play. Well done, RK!
Special thanks to Alex Rose for engineering the sale and to Alex Rodriguez for stepping in to help. Sweetwater's service is the best!
