Reviews

Noob’s First Piano
I've been writing songs and performing on guitar for 4 decades, but recently decided I'd like to learn to play the piano. My original thought was that I should purchase a MIDI controller with a 37 to 61 key keyboard as I record into GarageBand. However, the more I reviewed MIDI controllers, it seemed like they all had some sort of shortcoming (key feel, sketchy compatibility with DAWs, insufficient to gig with, build quality, etc.). The more I researched, the more I kept coming back to the Yamaha Reface CP. I didn't feel like I needed a full 88 keys, and I was seeing many YouTube videos of experienced players jamming good on the Reface CP, so that's where I put my money. My primary interest is in having a very playable instrument, and the "key feel" of the Reface CP was getting great reviews. Then there were the sounds the instrument makes - emulating vintage EPs. For me, it seemed a perfect fit. I wanted an instrument that I can learn on and ultimately gig with. The MIDI controller functionality is also a bonus.

I've been playing the Reface CP for a little over 3 weeks now, and I've really fallen in love with it. I've read/watched many reviews on the Reface CP, and a few things that come up are the size of the keys, and the small speakers. As to the key size, yes, they're small, and striking a white key that's between two black keys requires precision. I have skinny fingers, so this hasn't presented a problem for me. But be advised if your fingers are on the larger side.

The Reface CP's small speakers also come up frequently in reviews as being not up to par, and they are admittedly very small. However, for my purposes of learning to play the piano at home, the speakers are beyond adequate. I practice at about 1/2 volume - above that and I'd be disturbing my family members with my endless noodling on blues scales. Obviously for gigging, you need the line outs into a PA and you should be golden. I can't wait to run this through a PA someday!

Next up, the build quality - I love it! Very solid build, and as I mentioned previously, the key feel is very smooth. Being a newbie to the piano, I don't have much that I can compare it to, but to me, the keys feel great. They're snappy and solid feeling - not plastic or hollow feeling. Very satisfied with the keys. For such a small unit, it feels relatively heavy and well made.

Another major consideration is the sound. Obviously, right? I will say that the Reface CP sounds amazing. My three favorite emulations are the Rhodes I, Wurlitzer, and Yamaha CP settings. I'm not crazy about the Rhodes II or Clav emulations - nothing wrong with these sounds, they simply don't float my boat. And that f***ing Toy Piano sucks so hard that I can hardly stand it. Why Yamaha? Why? Give me a Grand for crying out loud!! Yes, I know there's this clean piano sound if you do such and such with the selector button - just give it to me as an option and kill that toy piano.

Speaking of sounds, I have to say that I really appreciate the minimalist effect selection of the Reface CP. Personally, I will never need more than just a little grit, tremolo, and reverb, but who knows? All of the effects work great and together allow for a broad palette of sounds, and they're so easy to use. Very tasteful. Including a pic of the Reface CP on its stand. I exclusively play standing up (sitting is the new smoking you know).

This is a great small keyboard. You can use the settings or even play as a piano. The sound output isnt a lot but with a monitor or headphones it is great. So much fun to sit on the couch with headphones on and practice! We are in a motorhome with limited space so this has been perfect! I love it and highly recommend it. Sweetwater was also great to work with!
Beyond my expectations
It does more than I expected it to do. I wish instead of a toy piano and bell sound they had opted to give us more variations on the Wurly and Rhodes sound, perhaps with a bit more idiosynchratic character. And the "secret" grand piano sound is really way too hard to access (turn the dial to the "middle" position while powering on) because there is no detente in the dial and it is very finicky. But it's a blast to play and the Delay sections are just so much fun to tweak.

Wurlitzer, Rhodes, Clav, Yamaha CP and TOY PIANO! Touche' Yamaha. I'm not an 88-key kind of guy and I'm not a lover of software, either. I like hardware, I like switches, dials, knobs, and faders. This piano actually has all of that. I didn't think that this Reface keyboard would end up in my top three, but I have to say it did! I don't have an 88-key piano and I probably never will because my need for piano is not as pressing as my need for modules and small instruments with the exact sounds I need. I need this for vintage pianos, and the toy piano I never thought I wanted.
