A Popular Workhorse Bass

Bring the low end in with style with the Sterling By Music Man StingRay RAY2 bass guitar. This non-nonsense bass is an excellent choice for those looking for their first bass guitar or a workhorse that’ll get the job done. It offers a classic StingRay body shape carved out of poplar with a bolt-on hard maple neck and amaranth fingerboard that make fretting feel swift and comfortable. The StingRay RAY2's potent sound emanates from a passive ceramic humbucker made in-house by Sterling; meanwhile, master volume and master tone knobs to dial in your preferred sound. When it comes to building beloved instruments that are accessible to any musician, Sterling By Music Man is the epitome of top flight — and the StingRay RAY2 offers more of the same.

Trusted humbucking performance

The sound of a StingRay bass is one of the ear markers of its lasting legacy and low-end heritage. Sterling By Music Man imbued the RAY2 with a proprietary humbucker to seal the deal on this bass’s tonal capabilities. You’re sure to find plenty of thump and drive through this humbucker, with none of the hum associated with single-coils — just smooth, powerful tone that’s ready to work hard. After all, that’s the StingRay way!

Reviews

Ray2 by Sterling

I bought this bass for a friend learning to play bass. I visited him last weekend and gave it a test drive. I was blown away by the feel of the neck. The fretwork was top notch, not a single sharp end. The satin finish on the back of the neck let your hand glide effortlessly up and down. The pickup was clear and punchy. The setup was amazing! Excellent work by the Sweetwater staff. I have 10 bass guitars and have played for 45 years. This is one of the best values in bass guitar on the market. Great first bass or only bass. If you like the Stingray sound, but don't want the complexity of preamp and battery maintenance, and don't want to drop a load of coin, this is your bass.

Music background: Bass Player for Rewound, Playing bass since 1979
Amazing for the price and even if it was higher...
First off I have 5 Sterling basses of different models including a short scale (I also have many other basses but that is another story). I love the inexpensive sub series basses because of their jazz bass like thin neck at the nut and the necks just feel real comfortable. I decided to try one of these intro series basses just to see how they were and possibly as a project for mods.
I really expected to at least replace the pickup and possibly the electronics but so far I have no real reason to. I actually think this pickup and the fact that it's passive actually sounds better than the stock sub series. What really impressed me though was the neck and setup out of the box. This is too inexpensive for the 55 point check so it truly was out of the box. Needed a slight truss rod adjustment because of humidity but other than that set up great and the best thing, no fret sprout!!
Anyway, I think this is a great addition to any bass collection especially if you have no Stingray type basses and want something inexpensive... Playing this a lot now!
