Gretsch's Do-it-all Shells

The Gretsch Renown Series shell pack delivers a tone and playing experience that will have you going back to it for every musical genre and style. Their sound covers the warm tones of the 1950s as easily as it punches with the authority of 1980s rock. Much of the shells' versatility comes from their 7-ply maple construction and 30-degree bearing edge. And Gretsch upgraded the Renown Series with their 302 hoops, which exude the same character as die-cast hoops, but with added resonance thanks to their lighter weight.

Gretsch Renown 3-piece Shell Pack at a Glance:
  • Extremely versatile
  • Tried-and-true construction
  • Featuring Gretsch's 302 hoops
Extremely versatile

Gretsch knows that working drummers like you need a kit that can handle a wide variety of styles, and that's exactly what the Renown Series is crafted for. The design allows a balance of nuance and sensitivity, along with power and punch. Whether you're searching for the mellow tones of a vintage kit, the strong tones that fueled '60s rock 'n' roll, or today's clean and clear studio sound, they're all available from the Gretsch Renown Series shells.

Tried-and-true construction

The Gretsch Renown Series shells achieve wide-ranging versatility by way of their 7-ply maple shells. Maple delivers a tone that features just the right amount of cut, warmth, and volume, while never being overpowering. The Renown Series shells also feature a 30-degree bearing edge. By using a slightly shallower bearing edge, the shells are imparted with a softer attack and a bit more warmth. And Gretsch's famous Silver Sealer interior adds a little snap and really makes the Renown Series stand out at Sweetwater.

Featuring Gretsch's 302 hoops

While the Gretsch Renown Series shells remain true to their original design, their hoops are even better. You'll find these drum shells ring with added resonance and power thanks to their 302 hoops. These hoops emit the same basic character as die-cast, but they are lighter and less rigid. This allows the shells to move and breathe with more freedom. You'll love how clearly you hear the "Great Gretsch Sound" with more of an open and organic tone than ever before.

Gretsch Renown 3-piece Shell Pack at a Glance:
  • 3-piece shell pack designed for any genre or style
  • 7-ply maple shells offer sensitivity and power
  • 30-degree bearing edges imbue the shells with a softer attack and more warmth
  • 302 hoops are lighter for more resonance
Gretsch's Renown Series shells work great on every gig you play.
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Fantastic in every way
In an effort to pair down my practice/recording/lessons room clutter, I went from two 5-piece kits to a pair of 4-piece kits.

The lack of clutter and a bit more breathing room helps me with the creative process a bit more and helps instruction to students on a like for like setup. I've tried every non-Terry Bozzio configuration out there and while I love having a lot of drums and cymbals, I feel like my sweet spot is one up, one down, single bass drum pedal.

I've been eyeballing the Renown series for years and felt like it was time to give these drums a chance.

Gretsch's decision to put USA Remo heads on these drums and couple them with the 302 hoops was a great one. They sound very open and clear. They resonate beautifully. Tuning was a breeze. Playing them is a sonic and tactile joy. I did put one moon gel on the 13, 16 and an Evan's pillow in the kick. I also put a 4" hole in the kick reso because that's what I prefer. It's a bigger kick (even though I have a 26" set up in the same room for recording), but it's very controllable and doesn't get too out there. Those who've worked with bigger kicks know exactly what I'm talking about. I really didn't have to dial this one in. The process was much less work with this 24" kick drum. The 13 and 16 tuned right up and paired with a USA Bell Brass, wow this kit sings!

The natural maple gloss finish is classy. The clear heads with the silver sealer inside the shells really pops. I think Gretsch really nailed it with this kit, plus, it's perfect for my needs.

It's worth mentioning that there was a problem with shipping that resulted in a broken bass drum and bass drum hoop. Sweetwater took care of it promptly. I appreciate the sales and returns departments working together to make it right.

Gretsch Remown
Had to customize several items like adding mufflers to the toms. Additionally, the bass drum does not have t-style tuning screws. Possible a cost reduction effort. I had to order them separately adding $120 in cost to the kit. Then I had to order longer lug nuts as these where 1/2 inch shorter than the standard lug screws.

Additonally, I added a cymbal side mount to the bass drum.

While the added items customize the kit to my specification, the added cost of the t-screws should not of been on my nickel
