World-class sE/Rupert Neve SDC

The sE Electronics RN17, the second addition to the sE Rupert Neve series of microphones, is the first small-diaphragm pencil condenser mic to sport a large-scale, high-performance transformer. This hand-wound transformer works with a 17mm gold-sputtered Mylar capsule to deliver stunning sonic performance. The capsule's jaw-dropping definition and detail are enhanced by the headroom afforded by the Rupert Neve transformer, giving you lucid transparency, with a luscious, silken aura. The RN17 ships with an interchangeable cardioid capsule, a lovely wooden presentation case, and a Signature series flight case. Elevate your studio to a new level of sonic perfection with the sE Electronics RN17.

Redefining the small-diaphragm condenser

The second product emerging from the fruitful collaboration between sE and legendary console designer Rupert Neve, work on the RN17 began with a discourse between Rupert and sE founder Siwei Zou on the merits of small-diaphragm condenser mics and the challenges in designing them. After an arduous R&D phase and sE’s typically meticulous manufacturing, the RN17 arrived for testing at Sweetwater Studios — and our engineers were duly impressed. Simply put, the RN 17 advances the state of the art in small-diaphragm condenser microphone design.

17mm gold-sputtered Mylar capsule

The sE RN17's newly developed 17mm capsule is the world's smallest production gold-sputtered Mylar capsule. The result is nothing short of breathtaking. The detail from this capsule is uncanny, enhanced by the headroom afforded by the Rupert Neve transformer. The overall effect? Stunning clarity, authoritative bass response, lucid midrange, and an airy, extended high end. Indeed, the RN17 captures a spacious sense of air around even close-miked sources, topping them with that elusive silky sheen we all strive for in our recordings.

Elevate your studio with the complete system

The sE RN17 ships with a cardioid capsule and a lovely wooden presentation case with secure storage for the mic, a screw-in pad, and an optional omnidirectional capsule, which is available for purchase separately. The whole package is cradled in sE's top-of-the-line signature series flight case along with a custom shockmount. The sE RN17 works as a system consisting of the mic body, the included cardioid capsule, and the optional omni capsule. An investment in the complete set will usher your studio into a new dimension of world-class audio quality.

Reviews

Best Sounding Acoustic Instrument Mic I've Used To Date
Designed by Rupert Neve himself, this is the best mic I've ever heard or played through when it comes to recording acoustic instruments. Acoustic guitar sounds sublime through this mic. This relatively unknown and therefore underappreciated mic is a slam dunk choice for any acoustic sound source. If it was as well known as other acoustic sound source mics it would flood the market. Every recordist would be wanting one.

Highly accurate mic with a very pleasing sonic personality. Tremendously smooth and warm with just the right amount of open-ness...not too much, just right. Captures everything an acoustic instrument has to offer. Reproduces everything you want with nothing you don't. The perfect acoustic instrument mic. I too use it for the mid mic in a mid/side application, although it works just as effectively as a direct mic. This mic is, IMHO, the best kept secret for recording acoustic instruments I'm aware of. I very highly recommend it.
Music background: Musician, writer, arranger.
Fantastic!
I always liked my modded Oktava 012 mics (great mics!) for acoustic guitar, but even so they couldn't quite capture the full sound and detail I was looking for in my recordings. Enter the RN17. I hadn't really heard of the RN17 before, but searching through forums I found a number of glowing reviews. More surprising, the "golden ears" experts seemed to like the RN17 even when compared against better known SDC mics. After hearing a few sound samples (which I loved!) I was intrigued, but still skeptical that it would work for my own applications. I've owned my RN17 for a few months now and I use it primarily as the mid mic in mid-side recordings of acoustic guitar. It sounds absolutely stunning in that application. It faithfully captures the sound of the instrument in amazing detail and gives a beautiful, full sound. I'm now able to capture the magic that I hear in professional recordings. This is the sound. I may need to pick up another one.
very nice
I have had my eye on this mic for a while, and I am surprised to see that there are no other reviews posted here.I finally picked one up about a month ago. It easily competes with other mics in this price range, and the less expensive sm81 (which I have loved for years) sounds weak and mushy when compared to this mic. The RN17 is very clean and articulate sounding, and has a good, tight, low end response. It also presents a finely pinpointed location within a mix when used in mono. I also have used it as the mid mic in M/S applications with a Lauten Clarion and an AEA R84. I'm really liking it.
Some of the best sounding SDC’s available.
I knocked these mics down .5 stars only because I wish they were a little quieter; however, the slight noise increase is probably due to the transformer / circuit of these mics, and the bottom line is, they are some of the most musical and balanced SDC's available at any price point.

I compared these against some Telefunken M60's, and I am also very familiar with the Schoeps CMC6 line.

The Telefunken M60's got smoked by the SE RN17's… it was immediately evident that the RN17's had a more smooth, interesting, and thicker / balanced sound.

By comparison, the Schoeps are slightly less weighty, slightly quieter, but still very warm and smooth sounding.

Anyway… I know all these words are difficult to take seriously. All I can tell you is that, when I had the chance to hear the RN17's and compare them with the M60's, I knew that the RN17's were actually a special breed in sea of the SDC world.

Well done, SE/RND. A very classy sounding microphone.
