Pearl's Reference Series drums are legendary. They provide an outstanding genetic foundation for Pearl's Reference Pure Series of drum shells, which utilize 9mm plies of maple, birch, and African mahogany to create a thin, extremely vibrant and powerful up-close sonic experience for the player and listener alike. Sweetwater drummers were quick to note that different bearing edges were employed on the various drums in the shell pack, resulting in optimal shell-to-head contact and tight, focused response.

Tonewoods make all the difference
Toms at 13" and larger have mahogany added to the inner plies to increase the lower frequencies and accentuate the warmth of the maple. The Reference Pure Series toms 14" and larger begin using fully rounded bearing edges for even more shell contact. As the size of the bass drums increase, so does the amount of mahogany, resulting in super-solid, responsive bass frequencies. The Reference Pure snare shells have six inner birch plies for a resilient crack, and the 14 outer thin maple plies balance this with power, projection, and resonance, for superior snare tone and volume.
Select woods and precise processes for discerning drummers
Pearl’s SST utilizes a proprietary technique; select woods are chosen for their unique acoustic attributes and then milled to a precise thickness with overlapping scarf-joint seams, for a perfect air-tight fit. The wood plies are saturated with Pearl’s proprietary AcoustiGlue that permeates every pore and dries to the exact consistency of the wood for optimum resonance. Finally, the plies are formed in high-temperature molds with 1000 PSI of hydraulic pressure to produce near-perfect drum shells that exhibit superior tone, optimal resonance, and extreme strength.
