Grace Your Pedalboard with a Preamp Like No Other

The innovative Grace Design REX Microphone Preamp pedal equips artists with instant tone-shaping tools for enhancing the definition, volume, and EQ of any mic! The REX facilitates all the transparent clarity and openness of traditional Grace Design preamps, but it’s optimized for quick single-user operation. With the REX’s user-friendly features, you can shape vocals, add a dynamic boost, amplify acoustic instruments, and even monitor levels. Whether you’re an avid preamp user or a curious outsider, pros at Sweetwater can personally speak to Grace Design’s unparalleled craftsmanship and distinct preamp quality. The REX echoes the company’s legacy at a size that fits into guitar cases, backpacks, or pedalboards. Simply put, the REX is small, pristine, and — with a rugged metal chassis — ready for the road! The controls are intuitive and versatile, yet a breeze to navigate with a footswitch-activated mute. You get up to +57dB of gain on tap, a highpass filter, a 2-band EQ, an adjustable boost up to +10dB, and professional I/O spanning XLR and 1/4-inch options. Advanced users can explore the REX’s high-fidelity potential even further using an onboard FX loop for adding EQ, reverb, and more. Established acts looking for more mic control onstage and aspiring singer/songwriters needing a stage-controlled sound solution will find the REX more than delivers.

Musical EQ and onboard tools

Running your mic through any Grace Design preamp adds warmth and definition, not to mention EQ control. The REX packs ample tone-shaping tools that, properly applied, yield distinguished audio from any source. Many vocalists’ first resort is the REX’s highpass filter, a low-profile control toggle that boosts presence and cuts mud. This filter has a -12dB roll-off per octave with a 75Hz floor for musical results that shine. Moreover, the REX offers 2-band EQ with a +/-10dB range across lows and highs. It can shape the preamp to a singer’s voice, darken up banjos or mandolins, or add brightness to dark guitars or horns. While not a surgical fix for problem frequencies or disheveled instruments, the REX’s EQ is more than enough to tease pleasant, amplified tone from practically any source. For expanded EQ control, try adding your favorite parametric EQ to the REX’s FX loop.

No sound person? No problem!

Some venues are equipped to make you sound great, but that’s not always the case! Whether you’re dealing with a lack of personnel, equipment, or a lackluster sound system, the REX puts assurance and remedies at your feet. Is today’s PA giving buzz and hum? Flip the GND/ISO toggle to disconnect the ground and clarify the REX. Need to add EQ, flavorful reverb, or both? Slot your favorite effects right into the REX’s FX loop. The FX loop falls before the pedal’s boost section, giving any wet signal rich, pure sound when active. Alternatively, you can use the FX loop for an always-on tuner. Connect your tuner’s input to Send while leaving the Return disconnected — the tuner will stay active, even with the preamp muted. Finally, the REX lets users monitor their own levels using a dynamic indicator light. The indicator turns solid green at optimal levels but will flash red when your signal comes within 10dB of clipping. The occasional red flash is normal as your sound source peaks, but persistent red lets performers know when it’s time to roll back the gain. Tools like these give performers a level of quality assurance regardless of circumstances (or soundboards) beyond your control.

The missing link
Ive searched high and low with various speakers and effects-pre's.. This is the answer. Perfectly clear way more than I ever had, so much more volume I can attain now! Worth it!
A game changer for acoustic guitar
I work hard on acoustic guitar tone. Pickups and contact mics always seem like a compromise, and as a multi-instrumentalist I can't install electronics on every instrument. An external mic solves those problems, but getting great results playing through a house mic isn't quick or easy. I need more control from the stage, to reliably get a warm and natural sound using an external mic.

The REX came through: The clean preamp power sounds gorgeous, and connecting my guitar pedals through the FX loop was a success: reverb, EQ, and saturation pedals all sound good. There's been virtually no feedback, using a vintage AKG hypercardioid vocal mic for the instruments. It's pretty amazing to be able to use standard electric guitar pedals through a mic, and that opens up new possibilities.

The Rex has enough power for my dynamic mic, running gain at 60-80%. But that was a bit close to clipping (especially with the Boost engaged), so I added an inline preamp (Triton), running off the REX's phantom power, with excellent results. Now the gain is running at 30-50%, and there's no audible extra noise.

At first I was skeptical of REX's two-band built-in EQ, but it turned out to be adequate for most situations. I have more EQ on the pedalboard if I need it, but so far it has worked fine to use the REX built-in EQ for the basic sound, and save the pedalboard EQ as a sculpted boost.

The REX runs on 9v power, so I can power it plus pedals with an I-Spot. No need for a power strip, and the whole rig fits on one small pedalboard. Headphone monitoring works well with the "Amp Out" output.

Boost, mute, and HPF features all work fine. The foot switches don't "click" when you step on them, but that's OK since both have prominent indicator lights. The REX has solid construction without being too heavy, and the switches and knobs all feel smooth and super-sturdy; build quality is first-rate. It might have been nice to have a light indicator so you can see when the phantom power is on, but that's a minor omission. It's easy enough to see which position the switch is in.

Recording is greatly simplified, once you have your performance rig solid. Instead of tweaking the DAW each time you record, just capture the sound of your rig with a good interface. (For recording I remove the Triton, and use the line-level input on the Neve 88M.) This also makes your sounds easily available for Zoom meetings -- before this, it was too much trouble to set up the rig for one meeting. I can see how this approach would make it easier to blend your live performance rig with your recording equipment, since the recording rig becomes modular -- the performance rig is part of it.

Overall -- I'd rate the REX as breathtaking. An innovative solution, for those of us who prefer the external mic, but need more control from the stage. This changes everything.
