Experience Intelligent Distance Monitoring

Lewitt ushers in a new era of recording convenience with the RAY microphone. Packing a 1-inch condenser capsule and outstanding sound quality, this mic is dynamite on vocals. It brandishes Lewitt’s new AURA technology, which automatically compensates the gain and character of the mic according to how far the vocalist is from the mic. Here at Sweetwater, we find that RAY’s AURA technology makes it much easier to record singers who grapple with proper microphone technique. We’ve also discovered the Mute by Distance feature automatically silences the microphone when you walk away from it. Finally, the microphone includes a magnetic pop filter to take care of pops and plosives. Whether you use it with a client or as your personal livestreaming microphone, the RAY delivers superb sound every time you plug it in.

All-new AURA technology

If you’ve ever used a modern camera, you know how convenient autofocus is. Now imagine autofocus for microphones. That’s exactly what RAY does. Its cutting-edge AURA technology uses sensors in the microphone body to measure a vocalist’s distance from the microphone. As the singer moves around, it intelligently adjusts the gain to compensate. Meanwhile, it also tweaks the sonic profile for a more consistent sound. AURA technology is particularly useful for livestreamers and vocalists who move around a lot while singing. Make your audio sound clearer and more consistent with AURA.

Mute by Distance

Another thing that sets the RAY microphone apart is its innovative Mute by Distance feature. Mute by Distance uses the AURA technology to monitor your distance from the microphone. When you reach a certain distance away, the RAY microphone will automatically mute the signal, preventing any unnecessary noise from entering your recordings. The microphone also retains a dedicated mute button, so you can cut the signal at any moment.

Lewitt RAY Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone Features:

  • 1-inch condenser capsule captures the nuances of any performance
  • Cardioid polar pattern efficiently rejects off-axis sounds from behind the microphone
  • AURA technology manages the gain level and tone according to your distance from the mic
  • Mute by distance feature automatically silences the microphone if you walk away from it
  • Dedicated mute button immediately cuts the signal
  • All-analog signal path retains signal integrity
  • Magnetic pop filter attaches quickly and securely to the microphone
  • Looks great on camera

Reviews

Great mic with an extra amazing feature
I got this mic to be my default for podcasting. I love it because I can shift around a little and get away from it without changing my levels and I can purposely lay back on my chair and be on mute! Automatically! It really works and it's amazing. Since then I've been using it to record vocal performances. I don't have to keep reminding myself or the singer to sing into the mic. I just set it up and let go. Easy. Great product.
Lewitt RAY LDC

I have recorded a lot of dialog for Disney Feature Animation,Fox TV Animation, WB, Dreamworks and Sony. I was the production mixer for Family Guy and American Dad (amongst others), and an Emmy winner. From my perspective, this mic does amazing things. It is the perfect LDC for people with bad technique (all those actors who had to become engineers during COVID). But, also for me... because my mic technique is the worst ever. I engineer all my own vocal sessions and I am reaching for gear constantly while recording my voice. Off axis, at varying distance from the mic.

I put the mic through its paces and it nailed a consistent track regardless of where I was on the mic. It was truly amazing. I can think of many uses for this mic. Will it replace your U-47 or 251? No. As long as the person using that mic has good technique. But if you can't afford to miss a take, this is the way to go. It's not going to sound like the TLM -103, which seems ubiquitous these days, so be aware if you need to match up various mics in the mix.

Thanks Mark (Magdich) for making this happen. Very interesting tech.

A revolution in mics
I'd read about the Lewitt RAY in TapeOp and was very intrigued by the new technology that senses the speaker's distance from the mic. I do a lot of Zoom calls in the course of my work day as well as creating video content, and though I've been happy with the EV RE-320 I've used for years, keeping a consistent distance to the mic has always been something I had to be conscious of so I ordered a RAY to try it out.

The RAY has absolutely blown me away. It would be an excellent mic without the distance sensing, but it's absolutely unbeatable in a number of situations with it. My Zoom calls and voice work on my video content are very consistent. It's also a fantastic thing to be able to move a bit to the side and have the mic automatically mute if I have to cough or sneeze, because sometimes you can't hit the mute button in Zoom fast enough, and no one wants to hear that.

I also did some experimentation with my acoustic guitar. It sounded great, just like I expected an LDC to, but was much more forgiving to my moving around than any other mic I've ever used - being a foot further away at the end of a song than at the beginning barely changed the tone or volume on the recording at all! At an extreme of being 3-4 feet away from the RAY there's a bit more room noise that gets picked up, but in the 1-3 foot zone, it's remarkably consistent. Vocals sounded equally good as I moved a bit more than usual while recording.

I've liked Lewitt's approach to mic design for some time, and this is another great-looking mic from them. On top of the visual aesthetic, I like the design of the included shock mount a great deal. The mic is held securely, and does a fine job in isolating it from the floor and desk vibrations I invariably generate.

The RAY comes with both a traditional windscreen and an ingenious pop filter that's held to the top of the shock mount magnetically, allowing for a quick swap of the two if it's ever needed. It would be fantastic if more mics started using something similar.

The RAY's price point means it's not likely to be picked up by beginning podcasters or musicians, but when folks are ready to up their game a bit, it's a far better choice than going with something like an SM7B or even the venerable EV RE20/320.
WOW Amazing Technology,
Lewitt are really at the the forefront of microphone technology, Ray what a smart feature, they are obviously thinking outside the box, and coming up with amazing ideas to better microphone technology, when will they be adding the ray feature to all there mics that's all I ask.
