Capture Your Creativity from Anywhere

From field recordings in the untamed wilds of the world to pro-grade multichannel mixers powering arena performances, Zoom’s recording and audio processing technology has proven time and time again to be a reliable, rock-solid choice for capturing your sound. The R4 MultiTrak SD Recorder and USB Audio Interface refines the company’s multitudes of expertise to empower musicians looking to explore new, inspiring sonic terrains. Its ergonomic and portability-minded profile comprises a dense suite of creative and recording tools, including preamps, effects, amp simulations, per-track EQs, a built-in microphone, and more than 80 genre-spanning drum patterns. Recording pros at Sweetwater especially appreciate the R4’s 32-bit float recording, ensuring high-quality capture sans the worry of clipping or gain management. Moreover, the innovative “Bounce Track” feature expands its 4-track architecture by allowing you to successively build a master track as you go. Plus, its USB-C connectivity and dual XLR/TS combo inputs make this a formidable audio interface for any flavor of guitars, keyboards, microphones, and more, in the studio or out in the wild.

Minimal footprint, maximum sound design

Each of the recorder’s four tracks features an accompanying fader, letting you get hands-on with your audio management. The R4’s streamlined interface includes dedicated transport controls and sound-shaping tools, including panning, reverbs, echoes, and 3-band EQs for each track. Aural textures don’t stop there, however, as effects can be uniquely applied during recording when using the A input, with amp simulations, preamps, distortions, delays, and plenty more to ensure you’re preserving the artistic integrity of your ideas. One of the R4 MultiTrak’s most powerful features is the Bounce tool. With this, you can create and undo bounced audio of your 4-track recordings. Treat them like a project file you’d call up with a DAW: these can be saved and recalled later or preloaded onto the microSD card (not included), allowing you to build something with far more than just four tracks.

Much more than a simple demo

Using Zoom’s 32-bit float recording technology, you’ll never have to worry about clipping or gain adjustments — clear audio is a must, and Zoom agrees. Its pair of XLR/TS combo jacks can be used with time-tested Zoom preamps to accommodate nearly any instrument, including guitars, keyboards, and microphones. You can make a quick reference or capture lighter audio, like vocals or acoustic guitar, with the robust built-in mic. Moreover, the USB-C connectivity lets you use the R4 as a true USB audio interface that can be paired with your smart device or computer for expanded ideation. If drums are needed, then you’re not out of luck! The R4 comes preloaded with more than 80 drum grooves across numerous styles, including funk, rock, metal, hip-hop, and more.

Reviews

Versatile and easy to learn
I had middling expectations for this given the mixed reviews on the new Essential series, but it is one powerful and versatile piece of kit. I'm so happy I have it.

Audio quality is great for the price point. Not quite the black backdrop that Sound Devices has, but the 32-bit float makes up for it and the resulting tracks are absolutely usable...I had no idea what I was missing out on w/the flexibility of 32BFP.

The menus are great. They could use a little bit of reorganization in terms of workflow but for 95% of all functions they're immediate and straightforward.

I've only cycled through the effects and don't plan on using them but I suppose in a pinch they would help the right kind of user.

Here's what I would like to see improved:

1) include a silicone case or sleeve of some kind

2) the "File" menu has some obvious omissions. These options are in the "Settings" tree instead. You get used to it but it could be even faster. A few submenus could go away completely.

3) The play and stop buttons should be soft like the record button.

4) a recording loop function would be great. I'm not saying to turn this into a looper but to have the option to select a section of the track to automatically record over and over until you nail it would be powerful in a device like this where scrubbing is not granular. That would add touch-free punch in-out too.

5) A mk2 should have the XLRs on either the top or sides. I think many users will take advantage of the threaded stand adapter but because XLR plugs tend to be long and bulky there's an ergonomic challenge with the pitch of most tabletop height stands.

6) As mentioned above I'd like to see a more granular way of scrubbing through a timeline.

7) If you can implement the above a basic copy+paste would be welcome.

8) The EQ should be expanded. At minimum there should be a low cut on each track and to me this is a glaring omission. Please also include some basic parametric functionality for the EQ even if it's simply the ability to move the target frequency, and even if a limited frequency range it would be helpful.

9) when switching between the "track" and "input" views the project timer is obscured. It should *always* be visible along with the tempo value.

10) The headphone output is nice in the signal is clean. The buttons are responsive and clicky but this should really be on a dial, or maybe include a loudness cap or hi/low impedance switch in the settings.

At this price I can live with all of the above criticisms. But I would pay another hundred to uncage the beast. All of that said I think this is a must-have because of how quickly you can get an idea from your head into a multitrack format, and not need a computer science degree to do so.
Music background: 25+ years recording. Professional sound designer and product developer
I would give this ten stars if I could- it does much more than the product description shows

$ for a multitrack recorder with unlimited overdubbing and good sound. That's enough. It does that well.

It is also: an audio interface for computer *and phone*, with a built in mic- I use it for zoom calls and could use it with a DAW.

It is also a metronome and rhythm trainer for rehearsal- if you set a rhythm and push play, you hear yourself with a metronome and can fine tune bpm and rhythm patterns as you play- then you can record with the rhythm track and listen to how well you follow rhythm.

It is astonishingly easy to use, though the manual could be clearer on a few points

and zoom email support is fast and helpful when things are not clear.

WOW.

It’s a winner!!!
Easy to operate, great recording quality. Intuitive controls. Truly the best demo machine I have ever owned. The bounce track is most impressive as well. Nice job Zoom!
The most powerful recording tool ever?
I am a musician who loves to play guitar (Classical, Blues, Rock and Heavy Metal). I also dabble with drums, bass and piano. I have always wanted to combine all of my musical ideas into records which I can be proud of and share with friends, family and if possible the world. But one road block has always stood in my way. The recording process. I absolutely hated it! Trying to get the right mic placement on my guitar amp, fooling around with the Midi and DAW settings/ adjustments etc. you name it, I hated everything about it. It drained every ounce of motivation and creativity I had for playing and recording my instruments. That was until I got my hands on the beautiful Zoom R4. It has changed my entire experience with recording.

-It captures my sound with far greater quality than I could have ever imagined, which was one thing I was sceptical about before purchasing it.

-The ability to record up to 4 tracks and then bounce them to create 4 more additional tracks, AND having the ability to do this endlessly within once project has given me the ability to layer projects to my hearts content.

One of the most underrated features in this piece of equipment is the metronome, I am able to layer my guitar tracks dead on time with the help of the metronome as well as nailing other instrument parts to fully flesh out tracks in sync.

The ability to add effects to the mic such as chorus, double, distortion etc. and control levels, pan right/left, and so many other controls only add to the immense value of the R4.

The only gripe I can think of is that it doesn't connect to speaker via Bluetooth and it doesn't come with rechargeable battery. Outside of those two things, PERFECTION.

I give this product 5 out of 5. It is. By far the most useful recording tool in my arsenal.
