Score Big Gain with the R-10 and dBooster

At Sweetwater, there are few mics more revered for their true-to-life sound than Royer’s ribbon microphones. However, without the right preamp, a ribbon mic’s low output can often make it challenging to capture quiet and more intimate sounds. This is precisely why Royer has coupled their incredible R-10 microphone with a dBooster in-line signal booster — you’ll have plenty of gain to spare, no matter the source! While Royer make some of the most rugged ribbons around, the dBooster’s design prevents phantom power from reaching — and potentially damaging — your R-10’s ribbon element. If you're looking for warm ribbon tone without investing in a new preamp, Royer's R-10 and dBooster bundle is the perfect out of the box combo for your recording needs.

Smooth, velvety, and high fidelity

The R-10 design employs several Royer innovations, including an internally shockmounted ribbon transducer and a multilayer windscreen. The R-10's shockmounting effectively isolates the ribbon element from vibration and increases ribbon durability. The layered windscreen provides excellent protection from plosives and air blasts while reducing proximity effect, so you can close-mic sources without excessive bass buildup. The microphone's smooth frequency response, phase linearity, and lack of self-distortion is a perfect antidote to the unforgiving nature of modern digital recording. And its velvety, high-fidelity rendition of instruments and vocals is a sheer delight to the ears.

Load agnostic

The dBooster maintains headroom and gain regardless of load. The dBooster’s Class A input circuitry presents a high source impedance to the microphone, which minimizes damping (loading). This reduces coloration and distortion while simultaneously maximizing headroom. You can achieve an optimal balance between gain and headroom for a variety of uses by utilizing the 12dB/20dB gain switch. The dBooster’s low-impedance output is an increased mic-level signal that can drive a standard microphone preamplifier or a digital audio interface directly. It also minimizes signal loss on long cable runs.

Royer R-10 Ribbon Microphone and dBooster Pack Features:

  • Includes: Royer-R10, mic holder, mic sock, carrying case, and dBooster
  • dBooster gives your R-10 plenty of clean gain to accurately capture quiet sources
  • High SPL handling — perfect for close-miking electric guitar, brass, and other instruments
  • Multi-layer windscreen provides effective protection for the ribbon element
  • Flat frequency response with no high-frequency peaks, ringing, or phase shifts
  • Equal sensitivity from front or back of element
  • dBooster runs off of phantom power, preventing it from passing through the signal and potentially damaging your R-10’s ribbon

Reviews

The Mic You Need For Recording Electric Guitar
For years I was never quite satisfied with the traditional method that everyone used to record electric guitar of just sticking an SM57 in front of the cab. This always sounded sterile, thin and not what an actual guitar amp sounded like in person to me. I had always heard of pairing an SM57 with a Royer R-121 ribbon mic, but had never tried it due to the expense of an R-121. When Royer introduced the R-10 at a much more accessible price point, I decided to finally try one, and all I can say is that it is exactly what I was looking for. There is no listening carefully for subtle differences, this thing is literally night and day to a SM57, e906 or other similar mics popular for guitars. Guitar amps sound full and natural through the R-10 with little to no EQ adjustments. The booster included in this kit has also worked great and I've never needed to push my preamps to any extremes to get a solid signal with it. If you've found that guitar amps just don't sound natural to you when recorded with typical dynamic mics you have around the house or studio, this is probably the solution you're looking for.
Great mic
Mic paired with the db booster works great. Used on vocals and acoustic guitar. The mix sounds more natural than the condenser mic I had been using for years.
Music background: Mix and Mastering Engineer

When Royer Labs got their Technical Grammy in 2013, they couldn't wait to come to Sweetwater to show it off. One thing they impressed on us was how much our amazing relationship helped to get the word out about their products. Of course, getting the word out about their amazing ribbon mics was easy - we've never regretted recommending them. In fact, it wouldn't be immodest to say that Royer was one of the biggest forces behind the ribbon mic's recent return to popularity. In addition to providing greater clarity and transparency to the classic ribbon sound, Royer's designs dramatically reduced the bulk and weight of these mics. That's made it easy for the engineers at Sweetwater Studios to use Royer ribbons for close-miking amps and getting deep into drum kits and acoustic pianos. We absolutely love them, and we're sure you will too.
