The Prophet-6 Goes Modular!

The Sequential Prophet-6 Module (along with its keyboard-equipped stablemate) are Dave Smith's tributes to his groundbreaking analog polysynth, the Prophet-5. The Module boasts all the same controls as the keyboard version, absent only pitch and mod wheels and keyboard transpose. Says Dave: "It's not a reissue, it's vintage with a modern twist." Driving this 6-voice beast are two discrete VCOs plus a sub oscillator per voice. Other features are two discrete filters per voice, a studio-grade, digital dual effects section, analog stereo distortion, onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer, a knob-per-function top panel, and a new poly chain feature that lets you pair any two Sequential Prophet-6s for twelve-voice polyphony.

Sequential Prophet-6 Analog Synthesizer Module Features:
  • Pure, cutting-edge analog: modern, yet classic
  • Studio-grade dual effects engine
  • Poly Mod and polyphonic step sequencer
  • This synth is amazingly easy to program
Pure, cutting-edge analog: modern, yet classic

At the core of the Sequential Prophet-6 Module are two newly designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (reinforced by a sub oscillator) per voice. These modern analog oscillators feature continuously variable waveshapes with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves. Two discrete filters per voice give you Michelangelo-class tone-sculpting prowess: a four-pole, resonant lowpass (inspired by the original Prophet-5 filter), and a two-pole, resonant highpass. Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the Prophet-6's pure-analog signal path.

Studio-grade dual effects engine

The Sequential Prophet-6 Module sports a dual effects section that delivers studio-quality reverbs, delays (standard and Bucket Brigade Device - aka BBD), chorus, and phase shifter. Although the effects are digital, with 24-bit/48kHz resolution, true bypass maintains your pure-analog signal path. Also onboard is a 100% analog independent stereo distortion effect. In the early 1980s, the Prophet-5's polyphony and patch memory were huge technological achievements; onboard effects were nothing but a pipe dream (if that).

Poly Mod and polyphonic step sequencer

One of the Prophet-5's key features was called Poly Mod, and the Prophet-6 Module carries on - with enhancements, of course. As with its predecessor, the Prophet-6's modulation sources are Filter Envelope and Oscillator 2 (both with bi-polar control). Destinations include Oscillator 1 frequency, Oscillator 1 shape, Oscillator 1 pulse width, lowpass filter cutoff, and highpass filter cutoff. Unison mode (featuring configurable voice count of 1-6 voices and key modes) also makes an encore. The Prophet-6's polyphonic step sequencer accommodates up to 64 steps and up to six notes per step, letting you build sequences polyphonically, with rests and external MIDI clock sync. There's also a full-function arpeggiator that you can sync to an external MIDI clock as well.

This synth is amazingly easy to program

Dave Smith designed the Sequential Prophet-6 Module with a knob-per-function top panel that gives you instant access to virtually all its functions. You get 500 permanent factory programs, arranged in 10 banks of 100 programs each. You can, additionally, create and save up to 500 user programs. Toggle off the Preset button and you're in Live Panel (what you see is what you hear) mode, in which the sound of the Prophet-6 switches to the current settings of its controls. We Sweetwater synth tweakers are off-the-charts ecstatic over the Sequential Prophet-6 Module. We think you will be, too!

Sequential Prophet-6 Analog Synthesizer Module Features:
  • All-analog signal path; discrete VCOs and filters
  • 6 voices; 2 voltage-controlled oscillators plus a sub oscillator per voice
  • 2 discrete filters per voice: 4-pole resonant lowpass and 2-pole resonant highpass
  • Digital dual-FX section (true bypass maintains a full analog signal path)
  • Multimode arpeggiator; 64-step polyphonic step sequencer
Sequential's Prophet-6 Module is a must-have for your synth arsenal!

6 in the Mix

I bought this hoping the core oscillators sound and the sequencer functionality would be good, I've had this module for about a year of fairly heavy use. I receive nothing from anyone for leaving this review, leaving it for my fellow synth enthusiasts, keeping in mind this is all just my opinion, I'll cut to the chase:

Pros: the sound out of this thing- init oscillators sound good and only get better with ample modification options. Sequencer is close to the best on any synth because it is 64 steps, polyphonic, quick easy and effective. The sequencer on the Elektron analog keys/A4 is arguably equal/better due to per step modification and multi-track sequencing, but can't compete with the Prophet 6's sound. The unit is solid and the layout of the knobs is logical, the buttons are satisfyingly clicky and responsive, no menu diving whatsoever for functions, loads of inspirational presets and memory to write your own, most of the effects are surprisingly good, I like the delays. The unit looks good, and let me mention what I would consider the most important thing one more time: the unit sounds great.

Not many Cons, and not significant enough for me to rate this unit anything other than 5 stars, but here they are: The reverb on this isn't great. I would not say the knobs are flimsy, but I prefer more solid knobs like those on a Moog. Having six additional individual outputs for the voices would be also be great. Updating the OS on this module is also a bit more difficult than it is on most other non-Dave Smith synths.

Why does the synth module still get 5 stars with some cons? Because the Pros of this thing way outshine the Cons, and the Cons I listed are a matter of personal preference. If you watched/listened to videos of this on YouTube and you liked what you heard, You won't be disappointed buying it. I use this thing almost every day and it delivers great dynamic analog polyphonic sound.

Prophet 6 is Beautiful Machine

The Prophet 6 Desktop Module is a beautifully engineered and manufactured (all in San Francisco, California) synth, from the geniuses at Dave Smith Instruments. The build quality and sounds are amazing, and the layout is perfect--very user-friendly. For those like me who are not experts at sound synthesis, I would highly recommend popping the additional $70 for the software editor from Soundtower, for which there is a link on DSI's website in the Prophet 6 product window. The editor has a virtual reproduction of the synth, which shows the numerical settings for each adjustment--very handy for orientation, editing and learning, since such data is not shown on the synth itself. The software works seamlessly with the outboard synth, allowing navigation, editing, saving, etc without touching the instrument. Although there is no manual yet for the editor, the manual for the Prophet 8 is similar enough to get started. The Soundtower website hints at upcoming plug-in capability for the Prophet 6--meaning, I assume, programmable track assignments, but I'm not sure that's feasible for the hardware. Fantastic instrument here.

Amazing Tone

I make my living playing keyboard and piano, and have used a variety of keyboards and software synths over the years. However, the P6 module was my first analog synth purchase. I didn't want another keyboard but rather an upgrade to my VSTs using my existing controller. Before buying this unit I was on the fence about the limitations of an analog synth, thinking that hey, I have so many VST synths including emulations of classic analog gear, so shouldn't those be able to produce any analog style sound I want? I've been using VST emulations of some old school synths in a lot of my tracks lately and it was only after a friend encouraged me to get the real thing that I made the plunge and bought the P6.

And WOW... from the first five minutes I used this thing, I realized that I had been cheating myself by using VSTs for so long. It has such a beautiful, smooth, warm, rich, musical tone that I oh so dearly love. In my case, it had the style and sound that I had been chasing with my VSTs. In addition, I find that using such a well-built physical interface with the instrument (one-knob-per-function style knobs and buttons vs a mouse or assigning midi controller knobs) makes its use fast and intuitive.

Obviously this unit is more limited in the range/types of sounds it can produce, compared to digital synths, but what it does do, it does extremely well.

Great instrument

This is a beautiful instrument. I do wish I had gotten the version with the keyboard.
I had a Prophet 600 in the 80s, and I loved it. I was able to get a certain class of sounds that are unique. I bought a Prophet 08 several years back, and I like that instrument, but it just did not behave in the same way as the old Prophet I had.
Well, this one does. The difference was immediately apparent. I like the way the controls are laid out, and the effects are a very nice touch.
I like it!
