A Sweet-modded Iteration of Fender’s Classic 12-watt Combo

The Fender ’65 Princeton Reverb is one of the company’s most historically significant tube amplifiers, flaunting a sound, style, and all-around vibe that are nothing short of iconic. This tube-fueled live wire is versatile enough to tackle living room rehearsals, studio sessions, and live gigs, churning out dynamic cleans and overdriven textures with equal aplomb. You get a tube-driven spring reverb and tremolo (a.k.a. “vibrato”) that are guaranteed to satisfy your craving for legendary Fender tones. Moreover, Sweetwater’s in-house tube amp technicians have hand-modified this ’65 Princeton Reverb with some of our most-requested mods to provide you with added sonic flexibility and a lusher tremolo effect. Furthermore, the bright, colorful sound of this amplifier’s 10-inch Jensen C10R speaker pairs beautifully with its warm-sounding tube circuit to deliver the magical tone used on countless classic hits. This incarnation of the Fender ’65 Princeton Reverb brandishes a Baltic birch plywood cabinet with eye-grabbing blank-panel aesthetics, including a black Tolex covering and a silver grille cloth.

Upgraded by the SWX Mod Shop

The in-house technicians here at the SWX Mod Shop upgraded this Fender ’65 Princeton Reverb with our most-requested mods, so you can benefit from them as soon as you unbox your new amplifier. First, we added a rear-panel midrange control, enabling you to dial the amp from scooped, black-panel-style tones all the way to mid-forward, Tweed tones that mid-century Fender amps are famous for. We also modified the tremolo speed to a slower rate with a wider range of intensity control to provide you with a lusher-sounding effect than a stock circuit. What’s more, this amplifier is backed by Sweetwater’s exclusive 2-year Total Confidence Coverage warranty, which protects you from product defects and malfunctions — a must-have since modding the amplifier voids the manufacturer’s warranty. Be sure to also check out our SXW Mod Shop Deluxe Reverb.

Iconic Black Panel sound and style

The ’65 Princeton Reverb just bleeds tube tone. Powered by one 12AT7 and three 12AX7 preamp tubes, two 6V6 output tubes, and a 5AR4 rectifier tube, the amp also features tube-driven reverb and tremolo. The ’65 Princeton Reverb is the perfect combo amp for anyone who craves pure Fender tone in a lightweight, low-watt package. Moreover, the ’65 Princeton Reverb is versatile enough to go from the living room to the recording studio to the gig in true Fender style. Whether you’re aiming for naturally dynamic cleans or overdriven grit, you’ll find yourself reveling in the ’65 Princeton Reverb’s tube-soaked tones. We have many Princeton devotees at Sweetwater, and we’re all very excited about our custom-modded version of this classic amp.

The legendary Fender Princeton Reverb

The legendary Fender Princeton Reverb of the 1960s was small, light, and moderately powered. Though intended for practice situations, the Princeton Reverb was capable of big tube tone, and Fender’s world-class reverb and vibrato effects were the icing on the cake. From its inception, countless guitarists have chosen it as their go-to studio amp, crafting signature sounds with a stompbox or two feeding a miked-up Princeton. Today, original Princeton Reverb amps are prized collectibles and are becoming harder to find. The modern incarnation of the ’65 Princeton Reverb offers today’s players all the great tone and dynamics of the original in an affordable, roadworthy reissue. The robust 12-watt platform is a wise choice for creating tube tone in a small space, and it even provides enough output for small gigs and rehearsals.

Reviews

Versatile, easy to move, pleasant sounds . . .
So, I finally pulled the trigger on a PRRI. Mind you, I've owned other Fenders and even a Carr Rambler 2x10, so I know a little about the tone family. I am past the age where I can lift and carry a Super or Twin Reverb. So, weight factor limits my choices. I also like warmer sounding amps and I need a pedal platform for a modest handful of effects (boss tuner, mxr dynacomp, wampler tumnus, generic kit clean boost, Ibanez AD9). I saw this amp on Sweetwater as a demo, and ever since receiving it, I played it every day of the return period waiting for repetitions in the tones that would inevitably cause me to return it. I am happy to say that day has not arrived. Every day I played, I heard something new that I liked, and then I changed guitars and pedal combos and I loved the variety of reactions in the amp. I love the SWX mods, too. I know that mids are taboo with some Fender purists, but I like using the mids with my Tele (plus the knob is mounted on the back so it won't offend the aesthetics). The slower tremolo feature is musical and the effect will cause others in intimate settings to take notice. This amp can be a jazzer or a rocker without much effort. The Jensen C10R is not ice-picky at all. Maybe because I got the demo, the speaker was somewhat broken in, but I find controls are sensitive and you can dial harshness out--if you hear it. I have stood on-axis and off to the side and the speaker seems fine--in fact, I like it better that the Weber 12F150 I have in an extension cab I plugged into the amp. That said, I think the speaker/amp is plenty loud, too, and for playing with a band you can always mic it if you need to (you're playing too loud if you're drowning out a PRRI, they say), or if you need to record, you can put a 5751 tube in v1 and get sweet tones at 3 on the amp. So, it ticks all my boxes, and I hope we have long-lasting relationship.

The Perfect Mods for this Amp!
The Mid control gives you a lot of Beef!
Nice and Fat as you want it. Put that together with the Slower Tremolo and you've got a Perfect little Amp that's got all the things you love about the Fender Blackface Amps! Plus you can pick it up without breaking your back. Hook it up to your 12 in. Extension Cab. and you've got plenty of Bottom for any Gig. The Reverb is beautiful! I guess you can tell I'm Pleased!

Absolutely fantastic clean tones
I haven't heard of anyone regretting getting a Princeton Reverb RI and now I know why. Pure, clean Fender tones, with the nice variations of the additional mid control (you do have to reach behind the amp for the knob). Was shipped quickly and safely, with the Sweetwater warranty for the mods. Get this version while you can...
Mid control for the win
Fantastic amp. The added mid control makes the Princeton way more flexible. Zero regrets and hoping they offer more modified amps like this in the future.
