The PlimSoul’s Second Evolution

The PlimSoul mkII is an upgraded take on Fulltone’s original distortion pedal of the same name and still offers that priceless and revolutionary individual soft- and hard-clipping control — but now with a plethora of improvements. An increase in the input impedance sharpens leveling precision, while new germanium diodes within the hard-clipping control circuit mean vastly improved tonality at all intensities. Sweetwater guitarists are also digging the new brighter Treble control as well as a 3-way Bass switch that injects loss-less body to your distorted tone without hindering the signal quality. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Whether you’re a fan of cleaner and more rounded-off distortion or prefer the intensity of clipping that cuts hard, the PlimSoul mkII supplies the versatility to craft a distortion effect that matches the vibe of any tune at hand.

Two classes of clipping

Fulltone’s top-tier and flexible distortion tone comes from an expertly engineered circuit designed with two stages of clipping to emulate the energy and warm sonics of a tube amp pushing its limits. Beside its large Volume control is the Soft-clip control; it offers a rounder and more subtle breakup with a lot of compression and less overall gain. Its opposing clipping control is the smaller Hard-clip knob, which clips with a much harsher cut and, as a result, sounds more like the natural effect of a tube rectifier within an amp. This circuit is now truly independent, allowing users to maximize the effect of one clipping style regardless of the selected stage of the other.

A uniquely designed 2-band EQ neighbors the Hard-clip control, supplying a Bass section with a 3-way selector for Minimum, Half, and Maximum intensities. This new feature allows you to boost the low end of your signal to give your chosen blend of hard and soft clipping the most appropriate degree of low-frequency authority within the mix at hand. A miniature Treble dial offers brighter treble control than the previous PlimSoul model and sits just to the right of the Bass selector, ready to adhere to similar sonic principles on the top end but with more fluid motion.

Other mkII upgrades!

The original PlimSoul was revolutionary, but the mkII offers a more polished performance ready for any live or recording application you throw its way. Aside from its improved Treble and Bass controls, the PlimSoul mkII’s new top-mounted jacks include an input impedance of 700K+ ohms, allowing for even greater functionality with the Volume control than its 500K+ predecessor. Additionally, the inclusion of dual germanium diodes tied to voltage reference for the hard-clipping control promises remarkable tone and distorted effecting at any intensity. It’s PlimSoul’s best foot forward!

Fulltone PlimSoul mkII Overdrive/Distortion Pedal Features:

  • Distortion pedal with truly independent soft- and hard-clipping controls
  • Soft-clipping initiates rounder, subtler, and more compressed distortion with less gain
  • Hard-clipping provides a harsher cut that more accurately emulates a tube amp rectifier
  • 3-way Bass selector offers Minimum, Half, and Maximum low-end presence options
  • A new brighter Treble knob sharpens up the top end
  • Greater 700K+ input impedance lets the Volume leveler achieve greater precision
  • Upgraded dual germanium diodes instill phenomenal distorted tones at any degree of intensity

Reviews

Further Review Required
I hope I can give this a five star review.

I only have a Vox AC30 to test the pedal with. I also live in a house crowded with people with varying schedules. I loaned the pedal to a friend who prefers his Tube Screamer Mini.

He told me the Plimsoul Mk2 is the most versatile Distortion/Overdrive pedal he has ever used, referring affectionately to the Clipping controls.

Once I get some alone time with the pedal and my new AC30, I'll leave a personal review.
Music background: Wasted most of 27 years on guitar and drums
PlimSoul
Awesome pedal! Makes my small 1-12 amp growl like a vintage Marshall.
AMAZING!!!
Purchased this pedal and it's great by itself, but amazing when stacking with another overdrive. Thick, rich, midrangey -perfect!
Mike Fuller scores again !!
Great pedal - Fulltone never disappoints !!
Run a Fulltone Ranger into it and it. You may not need any other pedals.
Let me preface this by saying that this is not my favorite pedal.
I purchased mine when they were supposedly closing these out for good, thinking it would be unique somewhere down the road.
I did the same with the Fulltone Ranger with the same philosophy.
Now, I have absolutely got on great with the Ranger. It is an incredible treble booster.
The Plimsoul on it's own however is just good. Better than a lot of other drive pedals due to its versatility. But kind of sterile in a way I can't put my finger on.
I have a couple other pedals like that and I've found, as many others have, that stacking pedals is sometimes the key to opening up the sound of one or two pedals that just work very well together.
This is one of those situations in my opinion.
You can see plenty of video reviews on this pedal and depending on the amp, it may sound pretty great.
But a trick I ran into over the last several years if you are a pedalboard junkie and like to run into a clean channel or one right on the edge of breakup, is to get a good treble booster.
In this particular case, the Fulltone Ranger into the Plimsoul Mk II is an exceptional combination.
Its like putting a supercharger on an already quick car.
It just pushes it right over the top into sonic territory that has great tonal capabilities and exceptional sustain and flexibility.
I've had a King of Tone. It's great. However. I believe you can achieve sonic greatness without waiting 4 years by obtaining other combinations and finding your own sound. I use 3 different amps with completely different sonic qualities.
A Mesa Mark V. A Fender Super-Sonic 22. And an Orange Rocker 15 Terror. All sound great on their own, and different depending on the guitar and pickups you are using.
That said, you can go outside the boundaries those amp designers had in mind by bombarding the input with unexpected analog waves of sonic goodness and create things that maybe haven't been created before by simply opening yourself up to the possibilities and potential of gain stacking. I see it talked about in forums regularly, but rarely do I see Fulltone pedals in the conversation.
Break the mold and take a look at both of these pedals. Consider grabbing both. It will be money well spent.
