Innovative Cajon with Pickups from Meinl

When you want extra volume and more tone control, the Meinl Pickup Turbo Slaptop Cajon is the ideal solution. This innovative instrument is lightweight and features a Baltic birch body that sits comfortably in your lap with its unique T-shaped design. The Turbo Slaptop also features a passive pickup system that has bass, snare, and tone controls, so you can dial in your own unique sound — features we fell in love with here at Sweetwater. In addition, the walnut playing surface comes with internally fixed snares, which add punchy slap tones to the deep, boomy bass hits. The Turbo Slaptop even has forward-projecting sound ports that deliver even more volume to your audience. This cajon is literally built for sound, and you will hear it the first time you get it in your hands.

Link up other Meinl instruments

This cajon is equipped with a link input intended for use with other Meinl instruments with pickups. The link signal gets routed through the cajon's controls, enabling extra sound shaping before both signals get sent to a single amplifier. Using the link input, this cajon can eliminate the need for extra amplifiers, decrease a group's stage footprint, and lend a much cleaner visual look to a stage setup.

Note: Meinl's link system is not compatible with all instruments or sources. Be sure to call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for more information and a complete list of compatible devices.

Reviews

Love It, but needs a stand
Great sound, especially plugged in. I was worried about the low end of this drum before purchase but was pleasantly surprised by the end when plugged into our system. Acoustically, this is not as loud as a full size djembe so I think it shines best with the pickup.

A couple words of advice:
- If you are going to transport the drum, buy the case. It is light but a little awkward to carry and doesn't like bumps.
- I did not enjoy playing the drum between my legs, it seemed to slide down as I played. I ended up making a stand for the drum, to play from behind it (photo attached). Maybe I could have used a lower chair, but I think Meinl should look into making a proper stand.
Music background: Church sound tech, drummer
Great alternative to standard cajon
Pretty impressed with this cajon. We use this for acoustic worship sets. Very easy to come up with simple beats to accompany an acoustic set. Also great for people unable to play a standard (sit on) cajon due to playing position.

The pickups in this product work well. I ran this through my bass amp and also through our sound system. The "bass" is low and boomy. The snares really come to life with the use of the pickup.

Only downside to this is that, without the pickups, I dont feel that this unit (due to size) would fill a room or even compete well against multiple other instruments.

There is also a Cajon bag and brushes that I orded at the same time. Highly recommend.
I love it
I purchased this Cajon to serve a purpose as a snare in an acoustic cajon full kit setup I've been wanting to try for a few years now.
I bought the vertical subwoofer pickup Cajon as well and paired it with the Dw5000 cajon pedal to use as a throne and kick.
I built a 12" riser for the Turbo to sit on to bring it to normal height of a snare.
Loved the idea of the built in pickup!
What I have found is that when ran through the board the side of the Cajon that the pickup is on picks up very well.
The opposite side of the Cajon does not.
So to get an even full sound all the way across I just added an Instrument mic to the side of the cajon that doesn't pick up well and balanced both the pick up and the external instrument mic together and it turned out awesome.
Playing with Meinl Cajon Sticks and the tone is pretty cool.
Outside has a crisp snap, and the center has some cool Tom like sounds when playing with sticks.
Overall it's awesome.
Yes Fragile
After a month, the beautiful walnut top cracked right down the middle. I had given it a very hard slap with my bare palm, like how I would hit a conga drum in an excitable moment. The cajon had been stored at 45-50% RH, so drying out probably wasn't the cause. Mark Bruhn and the Sweetwater staff displayed their usual best-in-class customer service, taking it back under warranty and sending me a free replacement by 2-day air.

This is a fun instrument and I still recommend it, but be aware that the walnut top is not as sturdy as a regular cajon tapa made from plywood. The center bass section under the logo is thin and resonant, like the back of an acoustic guitar, so you should not hit it with full force. The outer sections over the snares are better supported and your hand will probably break before the wood does.
Awesome Cajon!

This thing is amazing! I needed something to play gigs at a local piano bar. This thing is loud on it's own, but plugged in makes a world of difference. Great tone. Easy to play! Worth every penny!
