Powell Flutes: a legacy of artistry and innovation
Powell Flutes began as a true labor of love. In 1910, jeweler Verne Q. Powell fashioned himself a silver flute with silver sourced from silver dollars, watch casings, and spoons. This impressive display of metalworking inadvertently launched his career as a flute maker. In 1926, he founded his own company and quickly earned a reputation for building the finest-quality French flutes. Indeed, Powell Flutes took the industry by storm and became quickly embraced by flutists from around the world. In the years since, Powell Flutes has been distinguished by constant innovation. They created the first all-14k gold flute and the one-and-only 14k white gold flute; they designed a platinum flute for the 1939 World’s Fair. They were the first company to manufacture a Cooper Scale flute. Powell Flutes patented their own alloy, Auramite, and developed a groundbreaking method for extruding tone holes. The company also holds the title for having built the only handmade flute to have been played in space! To this day, Powell’s legacy of artistry and innovation endures with every hand-finished flute that emerges from their factory in Maynard, Massachusetts.
