A Striking Hand-finished Professional Instrument

As the first Sonare flute to offer a professional mechanism, the Powell Sonare 905 Professional Flute is a symphony of premium materials, thoughtful design, and impeccable craftsmanship. A stunning sterling silver body and headjoint are amplified by an Aurumite crown, lip plate, and barrel — Powell’s patented process for layering precious metals over sterling silver. With its offset G key system and modern Powell scale, the Sonare 905 boasts incredible playability and superb intonation. Flutists at Sweetwater are more than impressed by Powell’s attention to detail and bespoke features, including 10k white gold springs, pointed key arms, and the inclusion of Straubinger Phoenix pads. Just wait until you play this striking instrument!

Silver and gold in exquisite harmony

A harmony of alloys, the Sonare 905 features a sterling silver body and headjoint, joined with a sophisticated Aurumite 9K crown, lip plate, and barrel. With an exterior layer of rose gold covering an interior layer of sterling silver, Aurumite 9K produces a lively and colorful tone that is distinct from any other metallurgic combination. Beyond its sonic properties, the Aurumite 9K tubing elevates the Sonare 905 to a work of visual art that is certain to bedazzle you and your audience.

Stunning hand-assembled keywork

The Sonare 905 exhibits stunning keywork that is laid out in a comfortable offset G key system, with silver-plated French-style open keys covering drawn tone holes, 10k white gold springs, and elegant pointed key arms on the non-fingered keys. Additionally, the Sonare 905’s hand-assembled keys are fitted with Straubinger Phoenix pads, which are resistant to environmental changes while also boasting a clear response and superior resonance. Plus, Straubinger Phoenix pads exhibit a light touch, inviting you to glide over the keys smoothly and rapidly.

Powell Flutes: a legacy of artistry and innovation

Powell Flutes began as a true labor of love. In 1910, jeweler Verne Q. Powell fashioned himself a silver flute with silver sourced from silver dollars, watch casings, and spoons. This impressive display of metalworking inadvertently launched his career as a flute maker. In 1926, he founded his own company and quickly earned a reputation for building the finest-quality French flutes. Indeed, Powell Flutes took the industry by storm and became quickly embraced by flutists from around the world. In the years since, Powell Flutes has been distinguished by constant innovation. They created the first all-14K gold flute and the one-and-only 14k white gold flute; they designed a platinum flute for the 1939 World’s Fair. They were the first company to manufacture a Cooper Scale flute. Powell Flutes patented their own alloy, Aurumite, and developed a groundbreaking method for extruding tone holes. The company also holds the title for having built the only handmade flute to have been played in space! To this day, Powell’s legacy of artistry and innovation endures with every hand-finished flute that emerges from their factory in Maynard, Mass.
