Old-school Archtop Elegance Courtesy of Pat Metheny

For more than two decades, Pat Metheny has trusted Ibanez guitars to fuel his boundary-pushing brand of jazz guitar mastery. The Ibanez PM3C moves the partnership forward while taking inspiration from the dawn of the electric archtop guitar, brandishing a single PM Special pickup to capture the dark, smoky vibe of legendary Charlie Christian pickups from the 1930s. This vintage-style pickup’s elegant tone makes the most of the PM3C’s fully hollow spruce/maple construction, elevating lead lines, rhythm comping, and even effect-drenched jazz fusion experimentation with acoustic resonance and articulation. The 3-piece maple/nyatoh maple neck comes carved into Pat’s signature PM profile, and it’s all topped off with a bound ebony fingerboard flush with striking inlays. Meanwhile, an array of gold-tinged archtop appointments will gleam under the stage lights, including a floating TOM-style bridge, trapeze tailpiece, and reliable Ibanez tuners. From swinging mid-century licks to progressive fusion panache, the Ibanez PM3C is a purpose-built jazzer worthy of a true 6-string legend.

Take your tone back to the archtop’s beginning

While Pat is far from your typical tradition-bound jazz guitarist, the Ibanez PM3C sports a PM Special pickup inspired by one of the very first electric guitar pickups in jazz history. In fact, this mid-1930s pickup design is so foundational to the development of jazz guitar that its often referred to simply as a “Charlie Christian pickup,” honoring Charlie’s pioneering role in the electric archtop guitar’s infancy. Naturally, the PM3C’s PM Special pickup delivers all the warmth, depth, and mellow tones you’d expect from an old-school archtop pickup, along with a richly resonant response thanks to the guitar’s singing full-hollow construction.

Fast and smooth neck, with Artstar fret-edge treatment

The 3-piece nyatoh/male neck on the PM3C has Pat's signature neck profile, designed to give you effortless access to the entire fretboard. For even smoother playability, the PM3C has received Ibanez's Artstar fret-end treatment. This essentially rounds off the edges of the frets, making the bound ebony fretboard feel even more fluid.

Richly resonant hollowbody construction

While scores of jazz fusion phenoms have ditched the old-school archtop standard for more ergonomic and esoteric designs, Pat Metheny’s dedication to the full-hollowbody guitar has never wavered. Why? To put it simply, hollowbody archtop instruments like the PM3C simply have a sound you can’t get anywhere else. Even plugged in, the PM3C’s impressive acoustic qualities shine through, imbuing everything from bog-standard comping duties to colorful, effect-laden lead lines with a lively and dynamic response. Plus, Sweetwater’s hollowbody adherents never fail to mention that the natural volume and projection of an archtop make it just about the perfect unplugged practice guitar!

Reviews

An excellent hollow-body that's comfortable to play and sounds fantastic!

A few things have been said about the Ibanez PM3C: a Pat Metheny signature model made in Indonesia with an orthodox pickup configuration and flatwound strings (as per Pat's preference). However, most reviews have not done this guitar justice, IMHO (Tim Lerch review and follow-up videos are an exception).

There are major advantages to playing & owning one:

1. It's reasonably priced, particularly important when you are a gigging player and when guitar can be exposed to various elements;

2. ergonomically, it's very comfortable to hold (a matter or preference, of course) and lightweight (mine is 5 lbs 11 oz);

3. Acoustically, it is VERY loud and pronounced, but retains a nuanced tones - both tones compliment each other very elegantly;

4. With its CC-style pickup, it sounds very articulate, balanced, and smooth through a Henriksen The Bud Six (this amp will make most players feel exposed, as it carries over imperfections in articulation and phrasing - and that's a good thing);

5. The fit and finish, including the fret work, are impeccable, that's just it. This is a territory most guitar manufacturers wish they could achieve with consistency like Ibanez have with this and other models (to be clear, this observation includes the Indonesian-made model lines);

6. It's relatively well balanced and does not seem to have neck dive at all. Speaking of the neck, it feels somewhat smaller than most hollow-bodies and has a more modern feel to it;

7. The hard case is vey sturdy and well designed - definitely a great option;

I have yet to find something that I dislike - so far, nothing.

For roughly $, or thereabout, you are getting the best value hollow-body for the buck that their is, period. On top of that, it sounds superb (isn't that nice, right?). BTW, if you run it through an acoustic-style amp like the aforementioned Henriksen, or AES the pickup hum is barely there in typical volume levels. Sure, you could a Lollar CC pickup in it, but I wonder that would be truly needed…

I don't typically write guitar reviews - it's a very subjective thing. But for this one I am gladly making this exception - it is absolutely worth it.

Thanks to Pay & Ibanez for offering a great guitar with some serious mojo.

Music background: A non-gigging student of guitar and jazz (sounds pretentious, I know)
Ibanez PM3C
I'm enjoying the new guitar. I made a little video demoing it.
Music background: I like to play jazz mostly.
Charlie Christian immortalized in an Ibanez Pat Metheny guitar!
I'd seen this guitar a few weeks ago and thought it was cool. Always wanted a guitar with a Charlie Christian pickup. The guitar is very light. Feels almost fragile to play. Set with some flatwounds. It's a pretty cool guitar for what it is. Comes with nice hardshell case. I don't play any jazz, but it works for whatever else I want to play.
Music background: I'm a rocker!
Great Jazz Box
I'm loving this guitar. I've wanted a Metheny model for a long time. I was so happy to see that he final released a model that he actually plays on stage that was affordable. The guitar is well constructed and feels like a high quality instrument. The frets felt comfortable and needed no filing. The neck however needed a serious setup. Not sure how it passed Sweetwater inspection. Nevertheless, after swapping out the strings for .10s and the set up, it plays like butter. The neck is very slim which takes getting used to and the CC pick up can hum a little. All that said, I'm very happy with the quality of the instrument and highly recommend it.
Great value, great sound
As a jazz guy, arch tops are kind of my thing. I've owned and played a number of them over the years. The Ibanez PM3C is obviously intended to be played as an electric guitar, but it has a decent acoustic sound (even though it has a laminated top). The guitar is also very light, which helps. The Charlie Christian pickup is what interested me the most. It sounds great and is very different from other single coils -- P90s, DeArmonds, or the Gibson McCarty pickup. My first impression is that the notes really pop, especially in the treble register. The sound is fat and hornlike ... really nice. The neck is pretty small, but not excessively so. There's room to do whatever you'd want to do. The fretwork is generally good, too, although there are a couple of spots that will need some attention (high spots, I imagine). Obviously, the guitar is set up to Pat Metheny's preferences. I have moved away from flatwound strings, so I will change those. I also am not a big fan of Tune-O-Matic style saddles on a jazz guitar, so that may be replaced with an ebony unit. Overall, the build quality of the guitar is very good. The case seems sturdy, too. You'd have to pay a lot more to get a vintage guitar with a CC pickup, so at this price point, the PM3C is an impressive value.
