What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Fantastic Pultec clone

I like this enough to want another for a stereo pair. All controls are stepped so a pair can be used on the master bus very nicely. It's HF boost has so many frequencies that it's even more versatile than plugins. Knobs are nice and tight and have a good solid feel. Most importantly the tone is just fantastic! It's got that Pultec cut/boost on the lows for nice tight bass. The low pass filter has more EQ points who's frequencies are closer together that real Pultecs or plugins so I find that more flexible and useful. The HF boost can go a lot lower than typical so again, more flexible and sounds great.

After doing sweep analysis it's EQ curves were in line with several pultec plugins and far more true to a real Pultec than my Klark Teknik EQP-KT which I hope to sell so I can buy another one of these. No noticeable noise floor, just pure tone. The API style op amp design means it responds faster to transients than a real tube pultec. I also prefer the 500 series format instead of a 2U 19" rack form factor.

My only complaint is the super bright power L.E.D. which reminds me of an airport runway light. Anyway, red dot stickers cover it nicely and since that doesn't alter it's functionality or tone, I can live with it. Although I could envision disconnecting it once the warranty is up. My Chameleon Labs 560 EQ has the same issue so it got a red dot sticker as well.

Summary, great tone, great features and don't forget... a great price! I'm looking forward to buying another.

PeQ-501a is an A+ Unit

There are so few reviews out on these that, to me, meant one of three basic things - 1) It's terrible - but try to find a used one, so that's out. 2) They simply aren't moving - but they're still being made, so that's out. 3) They're a good unit but they're not paying "influencers" to promote it. So I gave it a shot and I was not disappointed.

I've been comparing these to the PEX plugin, the BRA VEQ-1P, and my HRK EQ550P units. First off, there's no tubes, so... Second off, on the low end, I've noticed on both sets of my hardware that the low frequencies need more boosting to match the plugins. That being said, these have a completely different sound/flavor than the HRK units. Solid State, clean, punchy, bold, yet tasteful. It can range from subtle to extreme with ease. The high frequency bandwidth control is quite useful and you can tell a change when using it. I prefer this to both plugins mentioned, and I do prefer this on most things over my HRK units. These now sit on my mixbus for mixing and mastering. Easy to match, easy to recall, the extra frequencies are nice, and the sound is stunning. Don't let the lack of reviews scare you off. If you have the extra space in your racks, go for it!

Get this!!!!

Just got into the world of 500 series. Got this unit(waiting for the 2nd) along side 2 DBX 560A comp/limiters. This EQ is pure magic, I immediately ran some drums through it to beef it up and wow. The amount of body you can had to drums is incredible. I'm no professional and never used an original Pultec but I'm sure this is on par with that wrong what I've seen online.

Good, but did not impressed me

I ordered a pair of them with the Hope I could use them on busses. As this is stepped it was almost a perfect piece to me at this price to have choices OTB. unfortunately I had to return them and I will explain why.

The first thing that annoyed me is that I could not put them properly in my rack, as the holes did not match exactly and could not screw them in place.
Beyond this oddity, to review how it sounds : I found the high end quite nice and its attenuation musical, which is the quality of a nice passive EQ. On the other side, the low end did not impressed me at all and seemed to be quickly invasive. Even with 1 db increments, I found myself with too much low end quite rapidly on many settings and the attenuation to be a bit drastic which to me feels quite the opposite of the Pultec EQ it is modeled after.

Overall, beyond the holes/faceplate issue, I think it is a fair EQ, at this price point it is hard to ask for a lot I guess. Being stepped you can recall it super fast and that's a great plus.
But when you are going for a pair and don't get impressed at all, it is better keeping the money for something else I think.
