John Mayer Special Edition!

Back in 2002, John Mayer exploded onto the music scene with hits like "No Such Thing" and the following year, Martin introduced the OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition. Not surprisingly, even people who had never heard of John Mayer wanted to own this guitar and the limited edition of 404 instruments sold out completely. Mayer's Heavier Things album in late 2003 resulted in two more hit singles, one of which won a Grammy for Song of the Year and Mayer walked off with Best Male Pop Vocal of the Year honors. In 2005, he created the John Mayer Trio, playing electric blues in a series of memorable sold-out shows. With an expanding reputation and loyal fan base, the number of OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition guitars produced began to look awfully small. So, C. F. Martin & Co. asked John Mayer if he would create a second namesake guitar, one with many of the same attributes as his first, but which would be more affordable and more widely available. The end result? The OMJM John Mayer Signature.

Spruce top with vintage toner and lacquer finish

Like its predecessor, the OMJM John Mayer Signature features a top of solid spruce with specially designed "hybrid" bracing that enhances the rich, full sound. Body appointments are also similar, with a Style 45 rosette featuring a center ring of colorful paua (abalone) shell, bold herringbone around the top, grained ivoroid binding throughout and a traditional OM teardrop polished and beveled tortoiseshell pickguard. To enhance the beauty of the wood, a specially formulated vintage "aging" toner is applied and then the polished nitrocellulose gloss lacquer completes the picture.

East Indian rosewood back and sides for warm, rich tone

There was never a question about which tone woods to use for the OMJM John Mayer Signature Edition back and sides. East Indian rosewood is world renowned for its warm, rich tone. It has a wonderful harmonic structure that produces incredibly smooth overtones when combined with the spruce top and hybrid bracing. Black and white purfling surrounds the back, and there's an HD-style "zigzag" center strip. Other features include a black African ebony bridge with compensated TUSQ saddle, Style 45 white bridge pins inlaid with abalone and that jewel-like nitrocellulose gloss lacquer finish.

Select hardwood neck with African ebony fingerboard

The OMJM John Mayer Signature Edition's select hardwood neck with diamond volute is carved specifically with playing comfort in mind, combining a 1-11/16-inch width and a low profile shape for easy fretting. The East Indian rosewood headplate sports Martin's Old Style decal in silver rather than the familiar gold, along with nickel Gotoh open-geared tuners with butterbean knobs. The black African ebony fingerboard highlights 1/8-inch mother-of-pearl position markers and John Mayer's signature inlaid in pearl between the 19th and 20th frets.

Factory installed Gold Plus electronics

Many acoustics — and yes, even some premium quality instruments — come with optional electronics packages or even "off-the-shelf" units which can save some money, but ultimately compromises the amplified sound. For the OMJM John Mayer Signature Edition, the Martin luthiers carefully selected a Fishman Gold Plus Natural I system that would be factory installed in the guitar. This results in an amazingly detailed amplified sound that's never harsh or brittle sounding.

Includes vintage style case and signed/numbered interior label

Of course, a guitar this special comes with a special vintage Geib style hardshell case to protect your OMJM Signature Edition for years — or more accurately, decades to come. Making it even more distinctive, Mayer created a unique art deco inspired monogram that's embroidered right onto the case. What's more, each and every OMJM bears an interior label with the signatures of both John and Martin chairman C. F. Martin IV, and is individually numbered in sequence.

Martin OMJM John Mayer Signature Features:

  • The second signature Martin 6-string of Grammy-winning guitarist/songwriter John Mayer
  • Ultra-responsive Engelmann spruce top with touch-sensitive scalloped X-bracing
  • Beautiful East Indian rosewood back and sides resound with rich overtones and a firm, dense bass response
  • OM body style combines the comfort of a 000 with the versatility of a long 25.4-in. scale length
  • Fast-playing select hardwood neck in Martin’s comfortable Low Profile shape
  • Ebony fingerboard with inlaid John Mayer signature
  • Fishman Gold Plus Natural I electronics ensure stadium-ready plugged-in tones
  • Comfortable 1–11/16-in. nut width is sure to please players after a slight narrower feel
  • Vintage-inspired herringbone trim around the top and segmenting the back pieces
  • Top-quality Gotoh tuning machines

My favorite guitar I have played in 60 years…
After a long period of consideration I purchased this guitar from Sweetwater with the help of Matthew in sales. It was seamless, painless, and really a great pleasure and a lot of fun to buy this guitar. It will be the final guitar in my 60+ years of playing. I have three other Martin's. It was actually hand-delivered to my house in an unmarked white van that came directly from the airport. Two people knocked on the door and presented it to me almost like it was a present. I was beaming. First of all it is absolutely gorgeous. Flawless. The prettiest Martin I've owned and maybe the prettiest one I've ever seen. After two weeks of playing I can say that it is special guitar. It has beautiful action, great detail, expression, and a rich warm tone that makes my other Martin sound a bit bright and forward. The guitar came Carefully inspected and restrung with to my preferred string set.
It is a real beauty and I will treasure it.

Pure delight from the OMJM!
The sustain got me first. Strum a chord and it just keeps ringing! Then the low end. The gorgeous thump of bass supports the whole range. Then the subtle brightness of the highs brings character to the top and the entire guitar sings a chorus! This instrument is wonderful! It frets easily, like it was made for my hands. It is lovely to look at with its inlays and signature. And it plays like the beast it is! To say I love this guitar is an understatement. Thank you to David Wharam, who did a masterful job of directing my attention to this guitar and then sharing his experience and knowledge with such grace. My Sweetwater experience was a joy!
Music background: Folk, rock, bluegrass, country. Flat picking and finger style.

This is a great guitar. Easy and fun to play the second it's picked up. I swapped out the tuning pegs for ebony, then bone. Bone will give it a denser tone which sounds amazing plugged in. Bone will give it higher resonance and projection while played not plugged in, plugged in it has nice warm tone with dropped lids and more boomy bass. The neck handles like you'd expect, a dream. It's an easy bedroom guitar for laying down and superb for recording. Patrick helped me navigate through several guitars, and helped me land on the right one. He's a solid engineer and sales rep for Sweetwater who's been helping me for years - he really knows his stuff. I could be happier with this guitar. Thank you Sweetwater, for being the best place for online guitar and gear shopping.

It’s like that old Sony commercial, “It;s a Sony!” Well, “It’s a Martin!”
I had not played an acoustic in decades, but only a Stratocaster and Piano. After the 1st day, I had to order a set of Martin "Extra Light" strings, and they sound great, almost like this guitar was made for them. Someone said they had to readjust the neck after going to extra lights, but I did the .008 feeler gauge test and it was near perfect. Again, like it was made for these strings.

Normally as a musician, you would never buy an instrument without playing it first. I had no reservations about buying a Martin online as their reputation precedes them, plus Sweetwater checks them out beforehand, so there were no surprises when I opened the box.

As for this model, I was on the fence between this and the EC Clapton version. Either one would be a fine choice as they both sound great.

Fantastic Sound
Great Second Guitar and Ben Porter is Best In Class over there.....

With the Engelmann Spruce Top you will be rewarded with a clear and focused sound that stands out from the rest of your guitars, sustain as the day is long.

Keep in mind most if not all of the Engelmann Spruce tops will looked mismatched even if its cut / quarter sawn to perfection due to the diameter and twist in the tree, the trade off is great tone.
