The Return of the Almighty Oberheim!

The name Oberheim is practically synonymous with audio synthesizers, with founder Tom Oberheim considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the music industry. Nearly four decades since the last official Oberheim instrument, the juggernaut manufacturer reemerges with Oberheim himself steering the ship. Celebrating Oberheim's triumphant return is the OB-X8 polyphonic analog synthesizer, paying homage to the illustrious OB series by faithfully re-creating three of its models within a single synthesizer. By combining all the primary features of the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 models, the OB-X8 contains a selection of the most unforgettable and iconic synth sounds of the '80s, complete with individual filter types and all the presets that made each a standout instrument. An all-analog signal path means the OB-X8 is just as sonically warm and full as its older siblings, with labelled sections containing tactile buttons and knobs for easy and complete control of your sound. Its 61-key FATAR keyboard is both velocity and -touch sensitive, providing unlimited options for expressive playing at your fingertips. And though the OB-X8 is a "classic" synthesizer, modern optimizations in the form of an OLED screen and MIDI/USB compatibility make it the perfect addition to any synthesist's arsenal. Don't miss out on the long-awaited return of one of the synthesizer's pillars of design and ingenuity!

The Oberheim OB series: dominating the airwaves since '79

While the uninitiated may not have played or experienced an Oberheim in person, anyone who has flipped through radio stations over the last four decades is sure to have heard one of these unmistakable instruments in action. As the first offering in the series, the OB-X polyphonic analog synth only sold approximately 800 units from 1979–1981. However, a selection of these synths ended up in the hands of some of the era's most beloved music makers, including Rush on their Moving Pictures and Signals albums, Dennis DeYoung from Styx, Madonna, and even Prince. Replacing the OB-X in only two short years was the OB-Xa, which optimized the OB-X with welcome upgrades and streamlined its setup for ease of use. This synthesizer is responsible for the intro to Van Halen's timeless track "Jump," as well as gracing releases by New Order, Queen, The Police, and others. As the OB-8 replaced the OB-Xa in 1983, Oberheim's influence on music expanded into the stratosphere as artists like Alice Coltrane, Boyz Noise, Depeche Mode, Kool & The Gang, and many more adopted synthesizers as a core component of their sound.

Faithful Oberheim sound and feel with expanded functionality

One of the primary factors in the OB-X8's absolute accuracy to the OB series is its all-analog audio path. This factor is the catalyst behind the full-bodied, punchy synth sounds found in classics like "1999" by Prince and "Tom Sawyer" by Rush. This is more than just your standard clone or replication — from the components themselves to the actual interactions between said components, everything was meticulously analyzed for 1:1 realism, resulting in a powerhouse synth that delivers the sound and response of three iconic models in one. Fans of the OB-8's extensive "Page 2" functions will find a lot more to love in the OB-X8, featuring all the classic parameters alongside new ones for everything from accessing additional SEM filter modes to LFO keyboard tracking, independent pulse width control, and so much more.

Easy to control and impossible to put away

At first glance, the OB-X8's expansive control set may seem daunting. That said, Oberheim designed the OB-X8 with new and veteran users in mind, ensuring everyone can experience its sonic magic with minimal effort. Everything is labeled in function-specific sections with tactile knobs and buttons for effortless navigation across the board. The Master section controls volume and balance for dialing in splits and doubles as well as chord memory, tuning, and note hold functions. Turn to the Control section, and you're given options for Oscillator 2 detuning alongside a unique Vintage knob, affecting the voice-to-voice variability of envelopes, oscillators, and filters like the behavior of vintage instruments.

Modulation offers six different waveforms and allows you to route the LFO to a wide range of destinations, channeling everything from filter sweeps to vibrato, tremolo, and other creative effects. Oscillators dials in the base sound of the OB-X8, with two SEM/OB-X-lineage oscillators per voice and sawtooth, pulse, and triangle waveform options. The Keyboard section handles bi-timbral capability, one of the OB-X8's most impressive playing features that boasts upper and lower presets assignable to different areas of the keyboard and a wealth of controls to balance everything to taste. The Filter section is where the Oberheim sound gets its time to shine, with three unique analog configurations taken from the original OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 models. Envelopes' 4-stage filter and volume envelopes further shape your sound by focusing on the harmonics and loudness, taking you from hushed sounds to "Hallelujah Chorus" jubilance with only a handful of knobs.

For those who like to save their favorite sounds for instant recall, Programmer is your soon-to-be secret weapon, allowing you to save and select presets and access global settings for even deeper tonal tweakability. A set of programmable Levers offer vibrato and other modulation options, with a bend box providing a second LFO dedicated to the mod lever. Sweeping arpeggios and complex passages are a breeze thanks to the OB-X8's Arpeggiator section, with an ultra-visible OLED screen displaying program information and accessing the synth's "Page 2" functions. The OB-X8 delivers the sonic versatility and sound-shaping options musicians of all stripes crave — best of luck putting it away once you dive in!

Three delectable filters from Oberheim's lauded history

When anyone refers to an Oberheim as possessing that sound, there's a solid chance this is the result of the high-quality filter configurations found in all their classic products. The OB-X8 possesses three analog filters, one from each model it replicates. From the OB-X is the SEM-lineage, 2-pole, discrete lowpass filter, delivering massive sound and body with the addition of all the different modes of the original SEM design. The Doug Curtis-designed CEM3320 filters found in the OB-Xa and OB-8 make their way into the OB-X8, available in 2- and 4-pole options and the primary source for these synths' distinct sound.

Spearheaded by a living synth legend

Tom Oberheim's mark on the music industry is objectively undeniable. Before designing and developing some of the most iconic instruments and recognizable sounds of the 1980s, Tom's love of jazz led him to Los Angeles in 1956 with only a mere $10 in his pocket. After studying computer engineering, physics, and music at UCLA — not to mention a stint in the US Army — the Chicago Musical Instruments Company expressed an interest in Tom's groundbreaking ring modulator design. The impact of his ingenuity and electronics mastery quickly rippled through the industry, and in 1969, Oberheim Electronics was born. Several influential pieces of gear would soon follow, including a handy modification to the ARP 2600 for playing two notes simultaneously and the DS-2 music sequencer, before Tom's next game-changing idea: the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM). Co-designed with E-MU Systems founder Dave Rossum, SEMs solve the problem of sequencers controlling synths in a way that disallowed players to perform alongside the sequences by combining live playing and sequenced playback. Fast-forward to 1981, and a collaboration with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith would result in the MIDI spec, forever altering the course of modern music. The OB-X8 marks 35 years since the last authentic Oberheim, ushering in a new era of synthesis perfection for today's players and encapsulating an unforgettable career in music innovation.

Meet the team behind OB-X8

With decades of design and engineering under his belt, it's only fitting that Tom Oberheim employed only the best minds available to reintroduce the Oberheim brand to the world. In addition to Tom, the OB-X8 was designed by Marcus Ryle, Tony Karavidas, Dave Smith, and the incredible team at Sequential — Sweetwater's synth and gear fanatics quickly recognized this cadre of venerable movers and shakers in the industry. A former Oberheim engineer, Ryle is best known as a co-founder of Line 6 and the ADAT audio protocol. Karavidas has a long history of incredible hardware engineering, most notably working for Sequential and Dave Smith Instruments in a high-level capacity. Rounding out the list is Smith himself, founder of Sequential and responsible for the Prophet-5, hailed as the first commercially available polyphonic and microprocessor-controller synthesizer. With this all-star team behind the OB-X8, Oberheim is fully prepared to take the synth world by storm once again.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Reviews

The most nobel analog polysynth
In 1982 I had the OBX-a but unfortunately had to sell it. Since that time I missed it. When mister Tom Oberheim again released the new OBX-8 I was so happy and ordered it very soon. The sound of the the OBX-8 is so organic like it was on the OBX-a. Because I did many recordings with the OBX-a and now with the new OBX-8 I could 100 percent get the same sound! But it can much more because of the flexibility of the filters and modulations! It is really an instrument for true musicians. Also the keyboard is of high quality. This instrument has also a headphone output IN FRONT of the keyboard what is great too. Yes, it is expensive but remember that this is an instrument which you can play still in 10, 20 years or longer if you take care of it! Thank you mister Tom Oberheim!
OB-X8 Is Legit
Love it. Very musical synth for sure. It's hard to mess up a patch. The keybed itself is excellent. If you plan on putting this on an Ultimate Support Apex Stand, then do yourself a favor and get the 18" arms and the clamp that holds those arms. Due to the width of the OB-X8, it will wobble on the standard 13" arms.

No regrets on this purchase. My expectations were met.

The synth was delivered without damage, but it's the first synth I've purchased from SW that was not double boxed... I was surprised to see it standing upright on it's end against a wall in the UPS Store where I had it shipped with all the Oberheim logos and info on it.

Don't let "Page 2" deter you from experiencing this amazing synth. I've only had the synth a couple weeks and the "Page 2" stuff is already memorized. Not a big deal at all.

The screen is tiny, but I can read it. It's better than nothing.

Get this synth if you can. You can pass this one down to your grandkids!

SynthPunk told me I could barter with Sweetwater using my homemade kielbasa as currency, but that didn't pan out like I thought it would.

Living the Dream!
Since first seeing the Van Halen Jump video I have dreamed of having an Oberheim but never gave it serious thought as I just couldn't afford it. Recently started my search for an analog synth focused on Prophet Rev 2. I am blind so was trying hard to find something with little menu diving and tactile knob per function usability. I'm sure the Prophet is great but when it came right down to it I decided to hold my breath and pull the trigger and pay the extra and just go for it! 24 months same as cash did me in! LOL. After my first couple weeks I can say there is no way I would ever give this up! I'm a novice at best when it comes to sound design. I'm just loving every minute of the glorious sound of the presets. I do have fun messing around and tweaking the different parameters. The sound… to a blind guy it really is all about the sound and this is again…glorious! Out of the box the first sound was a very recognizable VH sound and I began to play and yes…a tear or two did come. It feels great to finally have something that will no doubt be a lifetime relationship. The only problem is now deciding which of my two kids gets this keyboard and which one gets the Kurzweil!!! Still love the latter, but holy cow… not even the same animal! On the fence? Just go for it! Glad I did. Thanks Billy Germano and his awesome team who were so patient with my several calls and seeming endless questions. You guys are great! Thank you.

A Dream of a Lifetime!
So, some 30 years ago when I was in my early 30's, I walked into a music store that was packed with synthesizers. I'd never seen one in real life except from afar while attending many rock concerts. Back then, there was no YouTube where one could listen to the demos & reviews. So, I tell the salesman, I want to buy the synth that Rush played on their Moving Pictures album. The sales guy replied that any synth could make those sounds. He didn't even show me any synths. Instead, he changed the subject and began rambling on about how much more powerful VST synths were and with computers they could make even more sounds than hardware synths. I quickly grew tired of listening to his nonsense and walked out of the store empty handed and feeling disappointed. Little did I know at the time that Oberheim synths were no longer in production and production had ended some 12 years before my visit to the music store. Even if I was talking to a knowledgeable salesman, my quest would still have ended up in futility. Later, I got so wrapped up in my career that I had barely any free time left for myself, soon I forgot all about wanting to own a synth. It wasn't until after I retired that I began to play and collect synthesizers.
When I learned that Oberheim and Sequential had partnered up to design the OB-X8, my excitement once again started to build. This would finally be my chance to own my lifetime dream synth. The opportunity recently presented itself this year in 2023 and with the help of my Sweetwater Sales Engineer, Jonathan Appleton, I was able to finance it.
You can't imagine the excitement I was feeling when the FedEx truck arrived the following morning, I had this beauty shipped overnight. Soon after unboxing it, I played it for two hours straight. I was totally enchanted by the beautiful sounds I was hearing. It was as if I was surrounded by tempting sirens beckoning and alluring me towards their song while sailing through the seas on a calm and pristine day. I became entranced and totally captivated by the sounds I was playing. That's the sound of the Oberheim, Epic, Powerful, Iconic, and Legendary! Words cannot express what I'm feeling after playing this timeless instrument. It's a gorgeous and is a meticulously engineered work of art. It incorporates the sounds of the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8. It's literally a trifecta of Oberheim synths that perfectly match the sound of the original classics! What's there not to love? I grew up with these sounds, they are part of my being. The OB-X8 just begs to be played and it looks amazing from any angle. Seeing the Oberheim logo on the synth just puts a big smile on my face like Jeremiah Johnson's nod of approval! Owning and listening to the sounds of an Oberheim has given me such a feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction and it's here in front of me now after all these years of dreaming about it. The feeling is profound, just stunning!
Hats off to Tom Oberheim, Dave Smith, and the Sequential team for making this dream come true. Ready, Salute!
Fantastic modern take on vintage classic
Having owned many Oberheim synths since early 80s, totally happy with Tom's latest version of the OB series. Contrary to another reviewer claiming you can only do brass sounds, for those who know who how to use synths and RTFM, you will be very happy recreating classic synth sounds from Rush, Prince, Jerry Goldsmith, Tangerine Dream, etc. so much great music from 1980s used these sounds, and the ability to mix and match elements from all the OB models is fantastic. I thought i was going to hate the grey design, preferring the blue stripe design, but in person, it feels just right. Sure, i kinda want a new Matrix 8, but this hits the target on what i wanted to play. Ability to play PolyAT from my hydrasynth a nice bonus. Zero regrets.
