An Enchanting and Potent Desktop Polysynth

When synthesists at Sweetwater heard the Dreadbox Nymphes for the first time they were astounded by the massive sound issuing from this compact desktop synth. Boasting an all-analog signal path, Nymphes evokes classic single-VCO-per-voice polyphonic synths from the 1980s, but its modern form factor and a host of powerful features make it a no-brainer for contemporary artists. Nymphes offers seven different play modes, including polyphonic, unison, and duophonic options, and chord memory. Additionally, it has extensive modulation capabilities, with 28 destinations for the assignable LFO, aftertouch, velocity, and mod wheel (from an external keyboard controller), and there are separate envelope generators for the VCA and the VCF/VCO. Grimy basslines, plasma-cutter leads, effervescent pads, and animated arpeggios — the Dreadbox Nymphes can do it all! Throw in a lush, custom-designed digital reverb and you have one seriously enchanting desktop polysynth!

Powerful waveshaping VCO

The Dreadbox Nymphes offers six voices of polyphony, powered by a waveshaping voltage-controlled oscillator. Morph between triangle, sawtooth, and square waves with variable pulse-width modulation, and fortify your low end with the 1-octave-down sub-oscillator. Additionally, Nymphes has a white noise generator on tap for adding texture to patches, designing percussive sounds, and cultivating dramatic wind sounds and noise sweeps. Seven different play modes are available, including polyphonic 6-voice, polyphonic 3-note with two voices per note, duophonic with three voices per note, plus 6-voice and 4-voice unison modes and single-voice mono.

Rich and resonant analog filter

To shape the timbre of your patches, Nymphes is equipped with a lush, 4-pole analog resonant VCF. Filter tracking is highly accurate, allowing you to use the filter as a sine wave VCO. Synthesists at Sweetwater enjoy this feature for creating 808-style pitched kick drums and super-fat electro-toms. Nymphes also includes a 1-pole non-resonant highpass filter for cutting unwanted low-frequencies that can muddy up a mix.

Ultra-flexible LFOs

A true polyphonic synthesizer, Nymphes six-voices each have their own LFO for modulating pitch and cutoff. A second general-purpose LFO is available for assigning to any parameter, with up to 24 target destinations. The LFOs can operate in three different modes — slow, fast, and key track. They include variable delay and fade-out parameters, and they can be set to one-shot mode to simulate an envelope generator. Plus, you can sync the LFO rate to an external MIDI clock from a DAW, sequencer, drum machine, or master clock. If that wasn’t enough, the LFOs operate in both unipolar and bipolar mode, giving you incredible flexibility to fine-tune modulations.

Lush and dreamy digital reverb

Dreadbox outfitted Nymphes with a gloriously lush digital reverb built around the FV-1 reverb chip, a revolutionary design that is a favorite of boutique effects manufacturers. Powered by a custom algorithm, the reverb is long and atmospheric — the perfect finishing touch for Nymphes’ characterful, all-analog sound.

Reviews

One of the best sounding synths ever
I wanted to not like the Nymphes so I could sell it. The interface is everything I dislike: small, fiddly, confusing. But to be honest it's my favorite sounding synthesizer. When I think of all the stereotypes of what "analogue" is, this synthesizer is it. Lush, warm, organic, alive. When I play it I always am reminded what a "real" analogue synthesizer should sound like. This is not a pro bias, as I am biased against it. I really don't like this interface and so have tried to convince myself it actually doesn't sound good so I can get rid of it. But I cannot convince myself of lies. The truth is, it sounds so good and I like the color blue so it stays. I haven't heard another synth that sounds like this so it stays with me. I won't even ding a half star for the interface because Dreadbox worked so much magic on making it sound alive that I choose to forgive all transgressions.
Pure Dreadbox
I did not choose Nymphes...Nymphes chose me.

Found my holy grail synth
This thing is shockingly good for the price. Costs a little more than a boutique but you get 6 voices of actual analog synthesis? What's not to love?! For all the hoopla about the lack of a "knob per function" layout, this thing is an absolute joy to program, the hours just fly by. While there's a definite learning curve that can be a little frustrating at first, it's well worth the effort. Like a rubick's cube brought down from the heavens, I just want to unlock all of its secrets. Gorgeous raw sounds (BYOE), highly portable, full 6 voices, smooth filter sweeps and lovely sounding oscillators...only valid criticism is that the reverb sounds pretty bad. Hopefully dreadbox will address this is a future firmware update.
Phenomenal
I am writing this review after a prolonged "inverse honeymoon" where I was ready to sell it for over six months. The UI drove me nuts at first, but honestly it's actually not that bad. You press shift and then the sliders control their other settings and then you press shift and they go back. It's simple. I, and many others, have over-complicated this device when it's a little different and you just have to get used to it. Watch Dreadbox's 10 minute tutorial vid and you'll be fine. The only thing, and I have dinged it half a star for this, is the saving and loading procedure take it too far in the fiddly direction. The sound is phenomenal. It sounds like a million bucks. Beautiful, rich, deep. Dare I even turn to the cliches "vintage", "warm" and "analogue." It's alive. If you are in a cramped space it's a must. I will say the onboard reverb is really strange. But I like strange. It's not useful for most patches but if you want to sound like you are rolling around in a metal barrel drum. It's there. Take it from someone who did not like this device for months, it's one of my favorite synthesizers now.
Dread Box Nymphes more than expected!
I tried out the Nymphes due to the recent sale price and I was looking for a VCO analog synth that I can pair with my DCO Prophet Rev 2 and the Nymphes is perfect for a big sounding analog synth. I was worried about the workflow but it was pretty easy to figure out and I have not spent much time with it yet because of work but I give it thumbs up. The best thing about the workflow to me is no screen to look at, it is old school and it forces you to use your ears and move sliders until the magic happens and that my friends is the beauty of analog. I like to thank my sales guy Tiberius Huiu he is always very informative and keeps me in the loop on current deals and takes time to talk synths with me. I suggest you buy your Dreadbox Nymphes now while they have the sale or a year or so later this synth will be $800.00 or more or even worse discontinued due to chip shortages. Pair it with your favorite effects pedal or effects vst and you are in heaven also I have heard people complain about background noise but I do not have that issue I use a power supply with usb power and a separate midi cable and don't have that issue.
