Revamped, Expanded DIY Digital Synthesis

Korg devised the inaugural NTS-1 DIY kit as a means to afford tenured and aspiring musicians to truly own their sound, providing comprehensive synth sonics in a portable package. Never content to settle, Korg’s Nu:Tekt NTS-1 MKII DIY digital synthesizer kit has reimagined this lauded mini machine to better suit the modern musical landscape Much to the delight of Sweetwater’s synthesists, Korg upgraded the MKII to feature an 18-key multi-touch keyboard, allowing for precision performances and detailed control. And that all-access playability will be doubly valuable, thanks to the powerful new synth engine, augmenting the original’s sonic armature with further modulation possibilities, expressive effects, more oscillator styles, and an 8-step sequencer to complement the compositional capabilities afforded by the original’s arpeggiator. Don’t worry, that’s back. Its extended connectivity comprises three pairs of 3.5-millimeter TRS I/O jacks: Audio, Sync, and MIDI. With more processing power and sonic tools than ever before, the NTS-1 MKII takes DIY sound to new dimensions just waiting to be explored.

Note: This is a DIY kit that requires complete assembly to function. No soldering is needed; all necessary tools and instructions are included with your purchase. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer with any questions or concerns.

More connections, more power, more musical possibilities

Reimagining the NTS-1’s I/O suite serves two primary purposes. For one, it moves them all to the MKII’s rear panel, not only clearing the way for better access to the multi-touch keyboard and expanded sound design tools but also minimizing any hassle with integrating its interoperative possibilities into your setup. Second, it replaces the Micro-USB port with a USB-C port and adds a dedicated MIDI output, empowering flexible performance and composition opportunities with any number of external instruments with the 8-step sequencer. Moreover, the sequencer includes a step-recorder mode, in addition to saving functionality to recall your carefully crafted parameters before powering down your MKII. Increased processing power does more than introduce more oscillators, extending modulation capabilities with the Audio input for use with external sources for FM, AM, and even ring-modulated sounds. Effects have also been broadened to include overdrive and fuzz options, alongside sine-folding, hard and soft clipping, phasers, flangers, delays, and much more to explore.

Open-source opportunities for endless Nu:Tekt expansion

In channeling true DIY ethos, Korg provided a solid slew of supports for the NTS-1 MKII, not limited to the personalization options achieved with the reversible panels or capacity for cosmetic and functional augmentation. An open development API uses a dedicated logueSDK to enable you to customize existing effects or craft entirely new oscillators from scratch to share with the world. Then, using Korg’s Librarian Software, you can seamlessly transfer and manage your sounds, loading them straight onto your NTS-1 MKII.

Korg Nu:Tekt NTS-1 MKII DIY Digital Synthesizer Kit Features:

  • DIY kit lets you design and customize your own instrument without the mess of soldering
  • Distinctive form factor blends portability with performance-minded appointments for flexible use in stage and studio settings
  • 18-key multi-touch keyboard replaces the original’s ribbon controller for unmatched detail and accuracy in any performance scenario
  • Upgraded engine expands sonic possibilities with more oscillator styles, FX, and modulation possibilities to enrich your creative palette
  • Audio input can be used with external sources for broader incorporation of the onboard multimode filter, as well as amplitude-, frequency-, and ring-modification sounds
  • 8-step sequencer extends rhythmic and compositional opportunities, including step recording and parameter recall, to support dynamic stage and studio experiences
  • Added MIDI output allows for broader interoperative integration with your instruments, including sequencing
  • Augmented MIDI capabilities mean MIDI CC compatibility with most NTS-1 MKII parameters for deeper detail and exacting control of your sound
  • Comprehensive connectivity options include 3 x 3.5mm TRS I/O pairs: 1 for audio, 1 for Sync, and 1 for MIDI
  • USB-C port lets you connect to computers, power supplies, and external devices with lightning-fast information transmission
  • Open-source development software and Korg Librarian let you customize and craft existing and brand-new sounds that can be painlessly managed and shared with other musicians

Product review
Item was as described and arrived in a timely manner. Excellent product. Would recommend purchasing this product.
small and fun to make produced beats or noise
I love this one paired with my korg voca drum and the korg kaoos pad 3
Incredible amount of features packed into a toy-sized synth
This thing may look like a toy on the outside, but it's jam-packed with features that have no right to exist on a synth of this size and price point!

There are a few great YouTube videos out there that do a deep dive, so I'll just call out some of the standout features:

The onboard effects on this thing are shocking! Chorus, flanger, phaser, multiple delays (stereo, mono, ping-pong, tape, all tempo-sync'd or not), multiple reverb effects, and more. The LFO is also reasonably good! Want to modulate pitch? You got it. OSC shape? Sure. Filter? Yes. This is madness!

I've barely scratched the surface of the step sequencer and arpeggiator, but they're very full-featured for a synth of this size. You can also use Korg's Kontrol Editor software to create a library of up to 100 patches that you can load onto the synth with the click of your mouse.

This won't replace a "real" synth, but if you're looking for something that's ultra-portable and can run on a rechargeable battery pack and crank out sounds via the built-in speaker, this thing is a lot of fun. You could also use it to lay down a track in a fully produced piece of music, then blow people's minds when you show them the dinky little synth that produced such cool sounds.
