The High-performance, Value-packed Newton Channel

The Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel is a versatile world-class channel strip that brings any source to life with classic Neve fatness, sparkle, and punch. The Newton Channel includes a Class A mic preamp; a sweetly musical-sounding, discrete 3-band EQ section; a fast, versatile VCA compressor; and custom RND transformer-coupled outputs with variable Silk Red and Blue harmonic color enhancement. The Newton Channel’s name honors the historic town in England where Rupert Neve was born — Newton Abbot — and celebrates the designer’s sonic odyssey from the nascent Shelford years to the industry dominance of his large-format 80-series consoles to the modern designs emanating from RND’s state-of-the-art facilities in Wimberley, Texas. The Newton Channel represents the definitive evolution of the epic Neve sound that has graced countless iconic recordings in all genres — it’s the secret sauce used by top producers and engineers to achieve authoritative, radio-ready mixes that blast right out of the speakers.

Twice the punch

The introduction of any new Rupert Neve Designs channel strip will invite comparison to the Shelford Channel, which has established itself as a modern classic and become a staple in premier studios worldwide. The Newton Channel offers sumptuous Rupert Neve sound and military-grade build quality but at half the price, allowing you to stack your rack with a pair of them for linked stereo operation without exploding your studio budget. How does RND accomplish this? The Newton Channel has a streamlined control set that’s shrewdly designed to deliver superior results fast, without the complexities of extensive settings parameters. In practice, Newton Channel is a breeze to use. The unit’s exemplary performance is testimony to the engineering prowess of the company founded by the legendary electronics designer who revolutionized the recording industry and helped launch the golden age of analog. To that end, the Newton Channel employs RND’s custom transformers and Class A line amplifiers to deliver coveted vintage character, along with the optimized headroom and precision of transformer-coupled line stages.

The Newton input stage and preamp

Rupert Neve wrote the book on characterful microphone preamplification, and the Newton Channel features the latest Class A preamp technology from the company that bears his name. From nuanced acoustic performances to clamorous drum parts, this preamp handles any source with composure, delivering the clean, tight, highly detailed, and larger-than-life sound heard on hit records over the last half-century. And with a generous 72dB of gain on tap (plus 6dB of fine trim control), you can feel free to deploy your favorite passive ribbon mic on quiet sources. While the input stage provides an ideal impedance match for microphones, it is equally welcoming of line-level signals, making the Newton Channel a premium mixing tool for enhancing stems and complete mixes with vintage-flavored analog warmth, girth, and shimmer.

The Newton equalizer

With its simple controls, the Newton Channel equalizer section allows you to contour any source quickly and efficiently. The low and high frequency shelf bands are fitted with precise, 31-step detented potentiometers that deliver up to 12dB of boost or attenuation, giving you the ability to dial in subtle or extreme settings as needed. The LF shelf frequencies are selectable at 60Hz and 150Hz; the HF shelf at 8kHz and 16kHz. The parametric midrange band provides a 31-detent boost/cut pot and a wide range of frequency selections ranging from 220Hz to 7kHz. This broad range makes the Newton’s midband EQ very versatile, enabling you to tame lower-midrange muddiness, boost presence, or eliminate shrillness in the upper midrange. The meticulously chosen fixed Q curve maintains an optimal balance of precision and musicality — wide enough for broad-brushstroke applications without a deleterious effect on neighboring frequencies. The EQ is equipped with an independent bypass button.

The Newton compressor

The Newton Channel offers the latest update of RND’s creamy-smooth VCA compressor, giving you highly effective, imperceptible leveling control over any source, from mild to wild. Clamp down hard on your signal, and the compressor responds effortlessly. With 20dB of make-up gain, you’re guaranteed a healthy output for further downstream processing, no matter how hard you’re hitting it. A thoughtful addition is the super-useful pre/post push button, which inserts the compressor either before or after the EQ section. Lastly, the compressor section includes an independent bypass button to facilitate seamless wet/dry compressions.

Variable Silk harmonic enhancement

The Newton Channel is packing a secret weapon the classics never had. At the end of its signal path resides RND’s Silk Red/Blue and Texture controls that let you tailor the harmonic content and tonality of the output stage. By engaging these controls and sufficiently driving your output, you can dial in delectable 2nd- and 3rd-order harmonic distortion (that’s the good kind) and saturation of the output transformer, imbuing your tracks with juicy-rich thickness without the danger of overloading the output stage. The Texture knob lets you set the amount of Silk enhancement you want, from transparent to almost 10 times the amount of sonic color available with Rupert’s vintage console modules. Disengage Silk, and your output is pristine and modern while maintaining that assertive, transformer-juiced sonic signature. The Silk Red mode emphasizes harmonic content generated by the source’s high and middle frequencies, adding a glimmering sheen to the top end. You’ll find Silk Red perfect for vocals, pianos, strings, snare drums, and other acoustic sources. Silk Blue, conversely, works off the harmonics generated by the low and low-mid frequencies. This makes it great for beefing up signals such as bass, drums, male vocals, heavy electric guitars, and synthesizers. However you use it, you’ll find Silk indispensable for fattening your tracks with enhanced power and effervescence.

Custom transformer outputs

The Newton Channel is spec’d with a custom transformer output stage that feeds a rear-panel balanced XLR main line-level output. A separate -6dBu XLR output is provided to compensate for high levels of input and Silk harmonic saturation, letting you drive the Newton Channel harder to achieve more transformer harmonics without clipping the next down-chain device. Both outputs can be used simultaneously. Whether driven conservatively or pushed hard, the Newton Channel serves up the epic sound that made Rupert Neve a pro audio legend.

The legend continues

At Sweetwater, the name Rupert Neve commands reverence. Rupert’s 80-series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios were installing Neve boards as fast as they could. By 1977, with the introduction of the NECAM automation system, Neve boards were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. Today, Rupert Neve Designs continues to advance the state of the art with cutting-edge products that sound incredible and intelligently address the challenges of the digital age. With your Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel from Sweetwater, the legend continues.

Pure Magic

I was originally going to purchase the Shelford channel but decided to go with the Newton. Not dissaponted to say the least. One of the sweetest preamps I have ever used. It fits perfectly into my setup. I like using both outputs, the main and -6 because of the options it gives you. Very happy indeed.

This unit deserves more credit

This is my first piece of analog gear. I wanted to improve my quality from the source and have less of a hassle trying to "fix" what I've recorded. This product does that and more. I basically purchased it for vocals only. The eq and compressor is very clean and transparent so that it doesn't effect that "Neve" sound whenever you hit it with the silk button(silk button is not needed but it just gives that sweetness). This unit shines on anything melodic. It loves guitar and singing. RND is really on to something because most catchy songs today are very melodic. The Newton is a tribute to the past and a wink to the future.

Smooth and crisp

This channel strip made me a believer in analogue gear again! The silk mode on this channel strip is something magical. Incredible harmonics if you use the preamp and the silk mode for fantastic harmonics. The Newton pushes your vocals to a level only achievable by a ton of expensive plugins at the expense of your CPU processing capacity.

Night and day

I was originally going to go with the 1073 but like c'mon, this is something I couldn't pass up on. The Pre-amp, The EQ, the Compressor and a texture control knob. I have a WA-8000 mic and then this, everything sounds amazing. So much flavor, body, texture and color. I really don't think there is better in this price range. Yeah, you have digital plugins that "can do the same thing" but no its a night and day difference. Digital plugins muddy up the track in all honesty, if your not careful, doesn't mean not to use them. Analog gear gives life and body and just everything that a song needs. One of my friends kept on saying bro don't spend the money on it I have plugins that can do all that. He came over to check the bad boy out and he got way to excited by the quality difference.

They did it right

Well I just got my Newton and ...how can I say this... it is what they said it is. I dont own the Shelford but I don't think I need one more than I want one after getting the Newton. Everything, and I do mean everything sounds good thru it. The most shocking part of this equipment is the Compressor!! This hits waaay over its weight class and I would even say I don't NEEEED a CL1B now.. But Im probably still going to get one of those too. If anyone is complaining about what it doest have or do, just understand that this is a NEW from scratch channel done with modern technology and in my opinion it does not need to do what the shelford does because you can get the same results...just quicker... and cheaper. The Shelford is still a very impressive piece and If money was no object I would buy one just because. The sound is pure neve or not so Neve if you desire it with this thing and the EQ does not disappoint either. This could easily go on a desert Island list. I highly recommend this if your a 1073 fan or a Shelford fan and want the sound of both without the hefty price of both. I know I will get some hate for saying that but hey who cares as long as it does what I want it to do. It will leave your jaw dragging on the ground if you have any real talent or experience with high end gear like this.
