An Active Ribbon Mic From AEA

AEA welcomes the N8 to the growing family of Nuvo ribbon mics. In an industry where the technology changes almost daily, the Nuvo line from AEA celebrates the ribbon microphone's tradition of the clear, natural sound you get when you use a ribbon transducer, but without the worries of fragility and distortion their ancestors exhibited. As you can imagine, the Sweetwater Studios mic vault holds a treasure trove of sonic choices, and we can always depend on our AEA ribbon mics for intelligible, organic sound. Put the AEA N8 ribbon mic's depth and focus into your next mix.

Versatile and durable recording tool

Fragile. If that's the first thing that comes to mind, or even the second, when you talk about ribbon microphones, you're living in the past. The N8 is designed to bring ribbon mic sound wherever you need it. Need detail and warmth from a string section? Done. You'll capture the warmth of the cellos and the detailed highs of every violin. Clarity and response in your vocals? You got it! No muddy diaphragm you have to EQ the life into during mixdown. Want natural, focused, distortion-free sound for a remote recording? Here it is. Even over long cable runs, the N8 handles it all with ease. It's the ribbon microphone that's built to withstand the rigors of recording life, whether that's in the corner of your bedroom, a professional tracking studio, or as a part of your mobile recording rig.

AEA evolves the ribbon mic

1998 saw a new player enter the ribbon microphone manufacturing game - AEA. Established by engineers and technicians who had been repairing classic RCA ribbon mics since before 1976, AEA set out to not just pay homage to, but to faithfully reproduce the sound and performance of the original RCA 44 ribbon microphone. And to the acclaim of former RCA engineers, they accomplished just that. The new designs, the Nuvo series N8 among them, impart the classic quality and response you only get from a ribbon transducer into your tracks by engineering them with the durability and versatility that you as a modern recordist demand.

AEA Nuvo N8 Features:

  • Phantom-powered electronics for optimal performance with any preamp
  • Unobtrusive looks mean you don't have to sacrifice sound quality for video recordings
  • Uses the same Big Ribbon element as the R44 to give you classic ribbon response and sound
  • Includes protective sleeve for mic, stand clip, and a carrying case
  • Requires +48V phantom power
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

So good...
I just bought my second N8 this year. Ever since buying the first I've been dying for a second to do stereo mic setups. Hard to say anything bad about this mic, I've used it in so many different applications and it just sounds beautiful. Save up and get two, trust me... It is worth every penny.
Love this Mic!
I finally found a mic that captured what i heard. I like to record vocals and acoustic guitar and this mic does what i wanted. I wanted something uncolored and as natural as possible.
AEA N8 Ribbon Microphone
Jared Kalish recommended this mic when I told him I was looking for a versatile ribbon mic to help in my acoustic guitar vocal oriented productions in my project studio. I have two other ribbon mics, and have to say this is the cream of the crop. This mic is not a one trick pony. I use it with great results on acoustic guitar, vocals, mandolin, upright bass, piano, and the kitchen sink. The sonic picture this mic provides is both warm and detailed and exactly what one needs when looking for the natural un hyped high end and natural sounding detail that ribbons traditionally have provided. I highly recommend this mic !!! I wish I had two.....

Wow!
Outstanding microphone, so detailed and beautiful sounding! It's like having a condenser only it is not and it has the character of a ribbon mic. The recorded sound is pleasant, pure, pristine and true to what you hear. I think you will be hearing a lot about these mics in the future. Try one, I think you will be amazed.

The AEA N8 is the first ribbon mic I've used that doesn't suffer from any of the typical shortcomings of most ribbons. It gives me plenty of output, so it works great with any preamp. The N8 is also full range, so I don't have to pair it with another mic to capture something well. I've used it on a variety of sources now and it just hasn't stopped amazing me.
